A correspondent of the Philadelphia
Recerd, writing from Bedford, was ".struck
with the dignified presence of a lady whom
I afterward ascertained te be Mjs. Harriet
Lane Johnsten, the wife of a banker in
Baltimore and the niece of President
James Buchanan. She presided at the
White Heuse for her bachelor uncle before
the war, aud was perhaps mere talked
about and praised for her beauty than any
woman of the time in Amcrici. She is
still a woman of magnificent carriage.
Fer her Bedford Springs must pos
sess a peculiar chaim. Her uncle
summered at the springs every year from
1810, until his death except during the in
terval that he was abroad as minister te
England, and during his presidency the
summer capital was located at Bcdfei d.
An Englishman relates a chaiaeteristiu in
cident that occurred atBedfeid. President
Buchanan arrived at the hotel before his
room had been prepared. When the Eng
lishman get a peep at the nation's niler the
old man was hilling en his trunk outside
the deer waiting for the servants te make
the bed. This i.. probably true. There
was a rugged .simplicity about the m.m
and there has always been a primitive style
of living at the hotel."

Candahar has caused immense excitement
and consternation throughout India. It
had been regarded se certain that General
Burrows's force was perfectly capable of
opposing Ayoob Khan's irregulars that no
shadow of anxiety was felt for his safety.
The viceroy summoned his council in haste
the instant the news of the disaster ar
rived, and although some hepe was express
ed that the report of the losses had been
exaggerated, there is nothing in the
latest news at hand te encourage the hepe
that any considerable body of infantry at
least has escaped. The chief anxiety at
present is for the safety of Canadahar.
The less of this city would be a terrible
blew te us and a frightful misfortune te
the inhabitants, as the city would certainly
be pillaged and destroyed by Ayoob Khan's
troops. Frem Cabul wc learn that com.
plicatiens are arising at Ghuzuce,
and thcre can be no doubt that the
defeat will exercise an immense effect en
the situation at Cabul. It is considered
certain that Ayoob Khan's attitude will
modify the resolution te leave Abduraha Abduraha
men Khau te establish himself, aided only
by money, and that the evacuation must
be delayed. Opinion is unanimous as te
the absolute necessity of a complete re re
