An April lit Incident In a. New Yerk News
paper Office.
The OrapJue says: The following dis
patch vras received at the office of one of
our esteemed contemporaries en Thursday
morning :
Calcutta, April 1. A dispatch just re
ceived from Cabul states that the Affridis
have taken Umbrage.
The news editor read the cablegram two
or three times but couldn't call te mind
the place mentioned in it. He only
seemed te recollect that the Aflfridis were
a tribe of Afghans who had been mere or
less close allies of the British in the recent
campaign. Se, with a deep leek, as
though he knew all about the whole busi
ness, but had only time te clasii eh an eui eui
terial paragraph onehe brightening pros
pects of the English army in and about the
Khyber Pass, he passed the dispatch ever
te the particular member of the staff who
has Kiewn gray and emaciated in fretting
ever thousands of similar cable conun
drums with a single remark : " Write
that up quicker'n lightnin'."
The young man ler he is still young in
years took and tackled it. lie looked at
it sidewisc, cresswise, lengthwise and then
turned it ever like a "fifteen" box, but
couldn't get a cue for all he was se curi
ous. There was nothing te be dene but
te moon evor the map of Afghanistan once
mere. He spread out that attractive work
of art upon his desk, bitterly brushing off
the effice cat which was asleep there with
his nose en a bundle of proofs.
" Umbrage, Umkragc; wonder where in
Hades Umbrage is anyhow. Seems te me
I've heard of the blanked place, but can't
remember where it's located te save my
heartstrings from consuming fire. There's
Jaiinoed, there's Jellalabad, Fetchabad,
Himetabad, Shcillabcd, Astarabad and all
the ether bads and an eternal bad let
they are ! Jugdulluck, Candahar, Ghuznai.
Karagesh,JeeliarGunbaz, Hangu, Singbest
Kutty Sing, Shubzuar, Khiwajah Nurb
ruk, Kischi Negud and all the ether nasty,
beastly and blamablc holes ever invented
by Satan and named by a stuttering idiot,
but where Umbrage is I don't see. Um
brage 1 Umbrage ! 'Taint in the Khybi
Pass, the Bamian Pass, the Jugdulluck
Pass, or the Barraghil Pass. I'm be darn
ed if I don't give it up as a Jellalabad job."
Se saying the baffled expert tossed the
scrip en his superiors' table with tlie words
" I pass."
SCENE II.
Enter W. U. telegraph boy.
Bey There's the tail e' that dispatch
that was fccnt an hour age.
Editor tears open the envelope and
reads :
at the refusal of Sir Frederick Rob
erts te furnish extra rations en the anni
versary of the birth of their great chief,
Khaniff-Khau.
It was net until this moment that the
editor looked at the date of the dispatch.
It was April 1.
Jeseph Kusnn, Percy, Ontario, writes : " I
was induced te try Themas' Electric Oil for a
lameness which troubled me ler three or four
yours, and I found it the best article 1 ever
..ried. It has been a great blessing te me." Ad
