"He's been in the dumps because his
locomotive lias been 'off for three or
four days," said a railroad man at the
Union depot the ether day, as he pointed
te an engineer, who looked as sour as any
"Ge and ask him."
It took a quarter of an hour and a cigar
te clear the cloud from the engineer's
face, and then in reply te the query he
"It is a queer thing. There's my en

in making time, no matter hew the traik

ready at the word, held her steam beauti
fully, and she seemed te understand every

round-house, growling and spluttering and
acting as if she wanted te pick a fuss with

" Put her before a freight or stock
train. I've seen it tried a dozen times,
and it most always worked well. Here
she is new, bright a3 a new dollar and as
handsome as a picture, and I'll bet $50
there isn't the least thing out of order.
She's simply sulking, the same as a child
or a woman, and I knew what started it.
Three weeks ag e, while en my run in with
the night express, she just wanted te light
right out for all she Mas worth. She took
the bit like a running horse, and if I
hadn't choked her off she'd have beaten
schedule time by twenty minutes. She
acted mad right away, and in running
twenty miles she gave me mere trouble

went right back en me that night, and has
been sulking ever since. "

"Net all, but many of them. Seme
folks laugh at us and call it superstition,
but they never lived in an engine-cab."
Nevel Way of Teaching Music.
The results of the kindergardeu system,
as shown by the rapid progress made by
its pupils in the regular school of Germany
ijnd clsewhcrc, have given rise in New Yerk
city te a peculiar system of preparatory
musical training for children under ten
years. As far as tested, the "new depar
ture " is said te be successful. Its aim
is te furnish instruction in the rudiments
of instrumental music, in classes or singly,
as a direct preparation for private tuition
afterward. In the German-American
school of the nineteenth ward, several
classes of boys and girls may be seen daily
engaged in the novel exercises. Miniature
pianos, or rather set of keys, are placed en
the desks during "musical lessens" for
the use of the little pupils. The instruc
tion imparts a knowledge of the various
keys, notes and scales, the acquirement of
a correct touch and position by means of
finger gymnastics and exercises en key key
beaids, and also a thorough drill in keep
ing time by counting aloud. In this way
the advocates of the innovation claim te be
able te overcome the difficulties and dis
couragements with which music teachers
have te contend. The childien learn
readily te finger the keys and rapidly do de do
velep a love for the study. Proficiency is
net aimed at in this school, the design
being simply te pave the way for indivi
dual excellence after class instruct ions is
