SATURDAY EVENING, iFEB. 28, 1880.
THE COMING ERA.
They tell us that the Muse is seen te fly hence,
Leaving the bowers ei song that once were
dear,
Her robes bequeathing te her sister, Science,
The groves et Pindus ler the axe te clear.
Optics will claim the wondering eye et fancy,
Physics will grasp imagination's wings.
Plain facts exercise fiction's necromancy.
The workshop liammcr where the minstrel
sings.
Xe mere with laughter at Thalia's frolics
Our eyes shall twinkle till the tears run
down,
Uut in her place the lecturer en hydraulic
Spout forth his watery science te the town.
Xe mere our foolish passions and affections
The tragic Muse with mimic grief shall try.
Hut, nobler far, a course of vivisections
Teach what it costs a tortured brute te die.
The unearthed monad, long In buried rocks
hid.
Shall tell the secret whence our being came ;
The chemibt show us death in life's black
oxide,
Lett when the breath no longer fans its flame.
Instead ei crack-brained poets in their attics
Filling thin volumes with their flowery talk,
There shall be books of wholesome mathe
matics The tutor with his black-beard and Ids chalk.
Xe longer bards with madrigal and sonnet
Shall wee te moonlight walks the ribbened
sex,
Uut side by side the beaver and the bonnet
Stroll, calmly pondering en some problem's
r.
The sober bliss of serious calculation
Shall mock the trivial joys that fancy drew,
And eh, the rapture ei a solved equation
One sell-same answer en the lips of two !
Se speak In solemn tones our yeuthiul sages.
Patient, severe, laborious, slew, exact,
As o'er creal ion's protoplasmic pages
They browse and munch the thistle crops of
fact.
Aud yet we've sometimes found it rather pica",
ant
Te dream again the scenes that Shakspcarc
drew,
Te walk the hillside with the Scottish peasant
Among the daisies wet with morning's dew 5
Te leave awhile the daylight of the real,
Luil by the guidance of the master's hand,
Ter the strange radiance of the far ideal
"The light that was never en sea or land."
Well, time alone can lift the future's curtain
Science may teach our children all she
knows,
Hut love will kindle fresh young hearts, 'tis
certain.
And .June will net forget her blushing rose.
And se, in spite of all that tinieis bringing
Treasures of truth and miraclesef art,
P.eatity ami Leve will keep the poet singing.
And songs still live the science ei the heart-
Oliver Wendell Helmes, in the Atlantic
Monthly.
On Washington.
Seme Things About Him net Known or For
gotten. Net the least interesting event that
came te pass en the anniversary of Wash
ington's birthday in New Yerk this year
was the preaching of a sermon perhaps
vc should rather say the pronouncing et
an eulogy upon Washington by that
.sturdy Englishman, the Ilcvercnd Rebert
Collyer.
A text was found in Daniel x. 11 : "A
man greatly beloved," aud we recall no dis
course that is preserved in literature which
contains se much detailed information
that everybody ought te possess, but which
we suspect comparatively few persons
de se possess. Hew many individuals,
for instance, in an average modern drawing-room
would be found te knew that
Washington was six feet two inches high in
his stockings. His was fend of adventures,
fend of playing soldiers, and he was swift
of feet, lie was also, doubtless, fend of
mischief, but there was no meanness. He
fell in love before- he was 15, and wrote
poetry, worse than which could hardly
have been written. Before he was 10 he
sometimes made 20 a day at surveying.
Yet was always bad at spelling. He had
the largest hands in the thirteen colonies.
Timethy Pickering claimed te have the
next largest. He had great muscular
arms and a bursting chest. He was brave
as a lien, -and mere bashful than a girl.
This bashfulncss he never get ever. He
could talk te hostile Indians, or te the
great Leuis, without ablush or a stammer,
but net te a woman. Mr. Collyer said he
loved te watch this bashfulncss in the
man. It was a proof that te him woman
hood was as sacred as the angels. He mar
ried at 150, iu Mr. Cellycr's opinion five
years tee late. He had geed business
ability. It has been said that great men
were bad business men. This was net true
of the greatest. Byren and Shelley were
bad business men ; but Shakspearc, Wash
ington aud Lincoln, each se great that in
his own way none was greater, were net.
Several instances were given of Washing
ton's close attention te the details of busi
ness. Yet he could give money with
boundless generosity. During the revo
lution, se far as Mr. Collyer knew, he took
no salary, but en the ether hand, had ex
pended $75,000 from his own purse. He
was an all-sided man. Frem the camp he
found time te write te his wife te be sure
and let no one go away hungry from his
deer.
Tradition lets us knew that there was
such a thing as a curtain lecture for
Geerge Washington, Martha Washington
had a temper. His reply it has often
been repeated since was, as it was handed
down te us :
"Well, well, my dear, I'll sec te it, I'll
sec te it. Let me go te sleep."
He could jump into a river after a man
who had snapped his gun at him when in
terrupted in stealing his game, pull him
te shore, give him a tremendous thrashing,
and then go en and think no mere about
it. When his troops were retreating and
pressing him back lie could snap his pis
tols at them and, if the truth must be told,
he could swear at them like a trooper.
"And," said Mr. Collyer, pausing,
while his audience smiled, "I'll give you
leave te swear when you arc in such a
press as that. "
