On Washington.
Seme Things About Him net Known or For
gotten. Net the least interesting event that
came te pass en the anniversary of Wash
ington's birthday in New Yerk this year
was the preaching of a sermon perhaps
vc should rather say the pronouncing et
an eulogy upon Washington by that
.sturdy Englishman, the Ilcvercnd Rebert
Collyer.
A text was found in Daniel x. 11 : "A
man greatly beloved," aud we recall no dis
course that is preserved in literature which
contains se much detailed information
that everybody ought te possess,but which
we suspect comparatively few persons
de se possess. Hew many individuals,
for instance, in an average modern drawing-room
would be found te knew that
Washington was six feet two inches high in
his stockings. His was fend of adventures,
fend of playing soldiers, and he was swift
of feet, lie was also, doubtless, fend of
mischief, but there was no meanness. He
fell in love before- he was 15, and wrote
poetry, worse than which could hardly
have been written. Before he was 10 he
sometimes made 20 a day at surveying.
Yet was always bad at spelling. He had
the largest hands in the thirteen colonies.
Timethy Pickering claimed te have the
next largest. He had great muscular
arms and a bursting chest. He was brave
as a lien, -and mere bashful than a girl.
This bashfulncss he never get ever. He
could talk te hostile Indians, or te the
great Leuis, without ablush or a stammer,
but net te a woman. Mr. Collyer said he
loved te watch this bashfulncss in the
man. It was a proof that te him woman
hood was as sacred as the angels. He mar
ried at 150, iu Mr. Cellycr's opinion five
years tee late. He had geed business
ability. It has been said that great men
were bad business men. This was net true
of the greatest. Byren and Shelley were
bad business men ; but Shakspearc, Wash
ington aud Lincoln, each se great that in
his own way none was greater, were net.
Several instances were given of Washing
ton's close attention te the details of busi
ness. Yet he could give money with
boundless generosity. During the revo
lution, se far as Mr. Collyer knew, he took
no salary, but en the ether hand, had ex
pended $75,000 from his own purse. He
was an all-sided man. Frem the camp he
found time te write te his wife te be sure
and let no one go away hungry from his
deer.
Tradition lets us knew that there was
such a thing as a curtain lecture for
Geerge Washington, Martha Washington
had a temper. His reply it has often
been repeated since was, as it was handed
down te us :
"Well, well, my dear, I'll sec te it, I'll
sec te it. Let me go te sleep."
He could jump into a river after a man
who had snapped his gun at him when in
terrupted in stealing his game, pull him
te shore, give him a tremendous thrashing,
and then go en and think no mere about
it. When his troops were retreating and
pressing him back lie could snap his pis
tols at them and, if the truth must be told,
he could swear at them like a trooper.
"And," said Mr. Collyer, pausing,
while his audience smiled, "I'll give you
leave te swear when you arc in such a
press as that. "
