Considerable merrimentononeside am Munk dismay on the other, was exhibit** at the meeting of the return judges or Friday last when the presiding officei read off the district return from Lewis town, Granville and Derry. "Thatain'i right!" said one; "That's wrong," sait another; "Yet so it reads," said the chair man. All rushed forward, with mouths and eyes wide open, anil there, sure enough, in letters and figures, in black and white, Lashell had 656 votes, McFadden 523 votes. This change elected Lashell treasurer by over 100 votes, and it was at once evi dent that unless something could be done the judges could not refuse giving the cer tificate of election to Lashell and thus coni[xd McFadden to contest it, as it was clearly a case for the court to correct the error. Lawyers were called in, the thing talked over pro and con, hut those who Mig- ested a right failed to convince the return judges that they had any power to alter a plain return without a single de bet. What if all believed it wrong? lhere was the record, signed by the four judges! Iu this emergency, and in order to save 'he ciiunty from costs, Mr. Lashell agreed m writing to waive his claim to the certi ficate, whereupon the return judges gave hto Mr. McFadden. The error consisted i" giving McFadden's vote to Lashell, and the latter's to the former, and no doubt arose from the u*uai hurry of the judges to get home, and not giving the clerk* time to perform their duties, and ulso a neglect in not comparing the dis trict w ith the ward and towuship returns. Accident from a Pistol.—The danger o) firearms in the hands of children was " 'in exemplified on Saturday morning ' by the accidental discharge of a pistol ; " 'lie hands of the second son of l)r. ll' uderson, the ball from which entered cheek of his younger brother and Judged in the neck. Dr. VauValxah at tended the ease. The Miltonian Tableaux, world-wide ir the.r reputation, and which consist o startling representations from Milton'. Paradise Lost, will be exhibited in th< TOWN HALL, in this place, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings of this week. No other exhibition of the tab leau character lias attained the celebrity which this has achieved, its triumphs in the great cities attesting its surpassing ex cellence. This is an opportunity given our citizens of witnessing a work of great artistic merit, aud should not be left slip. Death of Dr. Bower.— We regret to an nounce the death of I)r. Charles Bower, which took place at Harrisburgon Friday evening. Deceased had been ill for a con siderable time, but no fears of death were entertained until within a day or two.— flis remains were taken to Newton Ham ilton on the emigrant train on Sunday morning, where they were interred in the presence of a large number of his old friends and representatives from various lodges of the Masonic fraternity. Dr. Bower leaves a wife and children to mourn an irreparable loss. Joseph It. Hanawalt announces in the Cliristain Companion Communion meetings on the 21st October at McAJa vey's Fort, preaching on the 22d; on the 23d and 24th at Spring Itun meetinghouse near McVeytown; and on the 23d, 25th and 2<ith at Dry Valley meeting house, four miles northeast of Lewistown. A Soldier Killed on the Railroad. —The Juniata Sentinel says:—On Tuesday of last week, as the train was leaving Patter son station going west, a soldier who was on his way to the Plains with a lot of re cruits from Carlisle Barracks, attempted to get on the train while in motion, and losing his hold fell under the train, one ear passing over him and crushing one leg and considerably injuring the other. He was removed to the Patterson House, where he lingered until Wednesday night, when deatli put an end to his sufferings. It appears lie got off the train to get a glass of whisky, and as the train did not stop long lie was a little late in reaching it. One glass of whisky cost this man his life. He had been seventeen years in the military service of the United States, and passed through the late rebellion without receiving any injury. His re mains were taken to Carlisle Barracks, where they were interred with military honors. His name was Lawrence Burk, and aged about 50 years. Wa M. Pannebaker, not Spanogle & Co., is the purchaser of McKees'tannery. An alarm of tire was raised on Sunday afternoon caused by the burning of a chim ney. In the Democrat's news from Darkey town, the fact that two or three white democrats were recently mixed up in tights up there is entirely omitted- The market continues to be well sup plied with good meats, far superior to that furnished during the spring and summei months. Among the butchers Ji. J. .SfUi.s every now and then dishes up an extra article, an instance of which we had yes terday morning, in a calf or young heifer weighing dressed about 500 lbs. It was a rare sight, and like his sausage, pudding, ponhaus, and meat generally, was sought after bv all who wanted a good bite. '' Effects of Tea on the System. —The Bos ton Journal of Chemistry publish lishes a lengthy article on the properties of tea, in the course of which the writei says, that it is no matter of wonder with him that brain Workers, in all tiie years since tea was introduced, have regarded it with the highest favor. It has a jiowei to subside irritability, refresh the spirits, and renew the energies, such as no other agent possesses. When the system is ex hausted by lalior or study, a cup of tea re-invigorates and restores as 110 other form of food or beverage can. lie thinks it promotive of longevity, and adds: "Tea saves food by lessening the waste of the body, .soothes the vascular system, and affords stimulus to the brain. Theyoung do not need it; and it is worthy of note that they do not crave or like it. Children will frequently ask for coffee, but seldom for tea. To aged people whose power of digestion and whose bodily substance have began to fail together it is almost a necessity." IIL'SINESS NOTICES. His improved method of constructing artificial teetii on gold, silver or vulcanite base, for beauty, couifoit ami natural appearance cannot be surpassed in thin county or any where else, 'thous ands who wear his teeth daily recommend their friends, as he never tails to please, and the numbers that visit his office attest the fact that he understands iiis profes sion. Stepping into the Boot and Shoe Store of Frank H. Wentz the other day, we found ourself surrounded with a tre mendous stock of all kinds of Boots, Shoes, Gaiters But wliatsur prised us most was that he had marked down prices at ill lower! This will be good news to ail, and we advise every body to call ami purchase before the stock is exhausted. BSf Call and see the large lot of Watch es of hU own importation , at It. W. Pat ton's, Bank ltow, Last Market street. Going Ahead. —Those of our citizens who have lately visited the eastern part of town could not fail to note the erection of a hatch of commodious buidings, situ ate on Logan street, and which are to be used as the Machine Shops and Foundry of Harry D. Slagle & Brother. The ma chinery is already in place, is of the finest manufacture, and can be seen in operation in the course of a few days, although the sound of the hammer upon the buildings will not cease for some time to come. The energy of the proprietors in thus rapidly carrying forward their enterprise must recommend them to the public, as is at tested by the fact that orders are now on their books for thousands of dollars worth of castings, mouldings, and machinery of different kinds, of which they intend to turn out none but first-class. Ourcitizens should visit their works, as it will be found interesting to view the motion of their various apparatus. t?a,Among the many articles required by business men, farmers, and mechanics, to make successful their plans and opera tions, none may be found more useful than a Pocket Accountant, containing methods for quick calculation, and con cise rules for treating problems likely to arise in every-day life. STOVES! Siv 1 fflin county, PA. = „.. tr ALL the jmportant Stove Improvement of the age can now be found at the Big Coffeo Pot Sign. By looking over our list! you can see that we have all the latest and I choicest stoves of the day. The latest and first Cookstovo we bring to your notice is E.BGTTIAIOP., Extra heavy av.d large. The oven in num ■ ber 7 is as large as number Bof any other ! stove, and it has po projection or low places in the front part of oven: it has also a revol ! ving top, by which means vou can move your pots or boiler off or over the fire with-i out lifting them, and thereby prevent the ef! cape of either gas or smoke in the room. But the greatest stove of the day, on ac> : count of the many conveniences, is James' Spear's ANTI-BUST, GAS BUHNER Cooking Stove. j which is preferred even befor? a range. You ! | can have, by the hot water attachment, hot and cold water up stairs; it also separates the unburnt coal from the ashes without dust or' dirt in the house; the centre plates are all double, with the air passing through them; it ' is a perfect baker, and a tip top stove in eve ! ry respect. ! ( Our next Cook is the REGULATOR, plain top, with feeder front. This is the; same as the other except the top. And last, but not least, is the COMBINATION COOK, a stove that we have been selling for six i years, and the sale of them is increasing ev i ery day. 'Tis a stove we put against the ! 1 world for baking purposes; it takes but little fuel, and is a plain, substantial stove, Almost everybody has heard of Jas. Spear's 1 ' ANTI DUST, GAS-BURNER, PAR-! LOR STOVES. For beauty, economy, and durability they i stand second to none, and for cleanliness j there is none to equal them; they only need j to be seen to be appreciated. We have also Spear's Anti Dust Parlor EGG STOVE, just new, and pretty. j | And we have the stoves that we suppose < are going to 6e the world on fire, —the Morning Glory, & ORIENTAL, AND THE ORIENTAL HEATER Our stock of STORE and OFFICE STOVES is complete—new pattern, wood, etc., —and ' in order that everybody can have a stove, we are now manufacturing out of genuine Bus sia Iron a new PARLOR GAS BURNER! stove, called the BON TON; and to all those i who wish to heat an upper and lower room with one stove, I would say, call and see J.; | IK YIN WALLIS'S Parlor Heater. I I have now improved and completed my Parlor Heater. With this stove you can per fectly heat up and down stairs at will, and j their cost is not one third that of any other lleater. There is no mistake about it, and 1 ask no pa*y until you are perfectly satisfied it; will do as represented. And since lam de-! termined to render satisfaction to all my cus j toniers, I have brought from Philadelphia; one of the b<-8t mechanics in the country, and j we intend this season to give special attcn tion to furnishing off and putting up all cur stoves. We have been compelled, in order to i supply the increasing demand for our stoves, to lease another building, on Brown street, in which w>- have a large stock of STOVES. P. S.
