RAILROAD ELECTION. —In pursuance
to notice, the Stockholders of the Middle
creek Railroad Company met in the Court
House at Middleburg, on Tuesday, 2d
October. W. F. Eckbert, Gen. Irwin,
and I. Conrad, were appointed election
officers. The follow ing officers were elect
ed.
President —Abner Thompson.
Directors —Joseph Alexander, E. L.
Benedict, Aaron K. Gift, John Hayes,
jr., John A. McKee, Thomas B. Reese,
John I). Romig, Moses Specht, George
Schnure, John S. Smith, William H. We
ber, Henry Zerbe.
ACCIDENTS. —Alex. Berlew was consid
erably hurt last Wednesday whilst taking
out ore at the Wattson hank, by the buck
et falling down, cutting him on the head,
breaking a few of his ribs, and otherwise
injuring him.
Wm. Knisely had his hand severely
injured oil Wednesday last at the machine
shop of Reese, Slagle <fe Foust, by being
caught in a strap.
Wm. Beatty cut his foot badly with an
axe on the same day.
THE FISH WAY COMPLETED. —We are
gratified to learn, from the Wrightsville
Star, that there is a fair prospect of a free
passage of shad and other fish up the
Susquehanna, during the next season.
The Star says:
"The schute or fish-way in the dam tie
low this place has been completed by the
Susquehanna canal company, and is now
ready for the purpose for which it was
designed. We suppose the shad will give
it a trial on their next annual migratory
fresh water tour up our stream the ensu
ing spring. If there were any young
shad to descend this fall, as they were
wont to do before dams were built in the
Susquehanna, they could notify their old
folks when they arrive at home in shad
dom, that the track is clear."
The suit tried iu the Snyder county
Court, between Solomon Brooks and the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, was de
cided a few weeks ago, the Jury render
ing a verdict in favor of the plaintive in
the sum of thirteen thousand dollars.—
This suit-arose out of the accident at
Thompsontown a few years since, and
was removed to Snyder from Juniata
county.
Wm. J. Jackman, has sold the Mifflin
town True Democrat to Mr. Geo. Stroop.
Mr. John Tyson of Mifflintowu captur
ed a bear some time ago, and had him
caged at the lock above that town. On
Saturday night a week, says the Sentinel,
Mr. Bear not liking his close quarters
made his escape by crossing the river to
the Island, and from thence made his way
to the mountain.
John M. McCoy, of Mifflintowu, has
been appointed Foreman of the Second
Division of the Pennsylvania Rail Road
Canal, vice Alex. Cyrus, resigned.
FATAL ACCIDENT. —Mr. Joseph Kurtz,
of East Salem, met with an accident on
Tuesday of last week which terminated
in death on yesterday morning.- He and
his little daughter had been riding in a
spring wagon, and while descending a
hill, some part of the harness broke, when
the horse became frightened and ran oil".
The wagon struck a stump, and Mr. Kurtz
and his little girl were thrown out. The
child escaped injury, but Mr. K. had one
of his legs broken in two places and his
shoulder broken and badly bruised, be
sides, it is thought, sustaining internal
injuries. Medical attendance was imme
diately procured, and he appeared to be
getting along pretty well until Monday
night last, when his shoulder became
rapidly inflamed, and death ended his
sufferings on the following morning. Mr.
Kurtz had been engaged in t£e mercan
tile business at East Salem for a number
of years, and was highly, respected by all
who knew him. His untimely death will
be deeply felt in the community in which
he lived.— Miffiintown Register.
Terrible Casualty.
The Lewisburg Journal has the follow
ing:
On Thursday morning last about six
o'clock, Mr. Andrew Meixell, of Sun bury,
son of Peter Meixell, of this place, was
shot under the following circumstances :
He left home before breakfast, on an
errand, and while passing the lot of a Mr.
Irvin, of Sunbury, noticed some apples
lying on the ground, and jumped over the
fence with the purpose of getting one or
two to eat; he had scarcely done so when
he was fired upon with fatal effect, by a
son of Mr. Irvin's about eighteen years
old. The gun was loaded with small
bird-shot, which took effect in the arm
and breast, penetrating the lungs. The
unfortunate mail managed to get over the
fence and walk a short distance when he
fell and laid until discovered by his friends
and carried home, where he died at six
o'clock in the evening. He was buried
at the cemetery here on Saturday last. —
We forbear any comment on this* terrible
occurrence, as the peqietrator is now in
jail and will answer to the law for the
offense The bereaved friends have our
warmest sympathy in this unexpected
calamity. Mr. Meixell was 26 years and
Hionths old, and leaves a wife and two
children.
Fifteen Car Loads of Coal OU Burned
near Attoona.— The Pittsburg Dispatch of
Tuesday says:
" On Monday evening a destructive fire
occurred about two miles west of Altoona
on the Central Railroad, by which some
fifteen cars loaded witli oil were totally
destroyed. The heat was so intense that
the ties were burned for a considerable,
distance,, and the rails warped, impair
ing the track to such an extent as to de
lay all the trains for four or five hours.

Reduction in Price
OF THE
AMERICAN WATCHES,
Made at WALTHAM, MASS.
TN consequence of the recent great improvementsin
x our facilities for manufacturing, we nave reduced
our prices to as low a point as they can be placed
With Gold at Par,
so that no one need hesitate to buy a watch now from
the expectation that it will be cheaper ac some future
time. The test of ten years and the manufacture and
sale of
More than £OO.OOO Watches,
hare given our productions the very highest rank
| among time keepers. Commencing with the deter
mination to make only thoroughly excellent watches,
our business has steadily increased as the public be
came acquainted with their value, until for months
together, we have been unable to supply the demand.
We have repeatedly enlarged our factory buildings
until they now cover over three acres of ground, and
give accommodation to more than eight hundred
workmen.
We are fully justified in saying that we now make
MORE THAN ONE-HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES
SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES. The different
grades are distinguished by the following trade-marks
on the plate:
1. '-American Watch Co." Waltham, Mass.
2. '• Appleton, Tracy A Co.—Waltham, Mass.
3. "P. S. Bartlett," Waltham, Mass.
4. "Wm. Ellery."
5. OUR LADIES' WATCH of first quality is named
"Appleton, Tracy A Co." Waltham. Mass.
6. Our next quality of Ladies' Watch is named "P.
S. Bartlett," Waltham, Mass. These watches are
furnished in a great variety of sizes and styles of
cases..
The American Watch Co. of Waltham, Mass.. autho
rize us to statethat without distinction of trade-marks
or price.
ALL THE PRODUCTS OF THEIR FACTORY ARE
FULLY WARRANTED
to be the best time-keepers of their class ever made
in this or any other country.' Buyers should remem
ber that unlike the guarantee of a foreign maker who
can never be reached, this guarantee is good at all
times against the Company or their agents, and that
if alter the most thorough trial, any watch should
prove defective in any particular, it may be always
exchanged for another. As the American Watches
made at Waltham, are for sale by dealers generally
throughout the country, we do not solicit orders for
single watches.
CAUTION.—The public are cautioned to buy only
of respectable dealers. All persons selling counter
feits will be prosecuted.

A HUMBUG.
HOW often we hear this expression from persons
reading advertisements of Patent Medicines, and
in nine cases out often they may be right. It is over
19 years since I introduced my medicine, the Vzsx-
TIAN LINIMENT, to the public. I had no money to ad
vertise it, so I lelt it for sale with a few druggists and
storekeepers through a small section of the country,
many taking it with great reluctance; but I told them j
to let any one have it, and if it did not do all I stated
on my pamphlet, no one need, pay for it. In some
stores two or three bottles were taken on trial by per
sons present. I was. bv many, thought crazy, and
that would be the last they would see of But I
knew iny medicine was no humbug. In about two
mohths I began to receive orders for more Liniment,
some calling it my valuable Liniment, who had re
fused to sign a receipt when I left it at their store.— i
Now my sales are millions of bottles yearly, and al! '
for cash, I warrant it superior to any other medicine j
for the cure of Croup, Diarrhcea, Dysentery, Colic, I
Vomiting, Spams and Sea-sickness, as an internal i
remedy. It is perfectly innocent to take internally, |

During late years the public have been misled by
large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of
Sarsaparillia for one dollar. Most of these have been
frauds upon the sick, for they not only contaiu little,
if any Sarsaparilla, but often no curative ingredient
whatever. Hence, bitter disappointment has follow
ed the use oT the various extracts of Sarsaparilla
which flood the market, until the name itself has be
come synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound,'-Sarsaparilla," and intend to
supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from
the load of obloquy which rests upon it. We think
we have "round for believing it has virtues which are
irresistible by the class of diseases it is intended to
cure. We cau assure the sick, that we offer them the
best alterative we know how to produce, and we have
reason to believe, it is by far the most effectual puri
fier of the blood yet discovered.

CAMPAIGNS OF THE
Army of the Potomac,
BY WILLIAM SWISTOS,
THE STANDARD HISTORY OF THE
GRAND ARMY
The greatest work on the War. Universally endor
sed by army officers and the press. The AUTHOR says:
*'l design in this volulhe to record what that Army
aid and suffered in ten campaigns and two score bat
tles."'
"T shall have to celebrate the unswerving loyalty of
this army, that olttimes as the bond nf military cohe
sion failed, held it, unshakenCorfortune, to a duty
self-imposed."
"I shall have to follow it through a checkered expe
rience. in a tale commingled of great misfortunes,
great follies and great glories: but from first to last it
will appear that, amid many buffets of fortune, thro'
•winter and rough weather,' the Army of the Potomac
never gave up. but made a good fight, and finally
reached the goal."
The Army and Navy Journal says:
"This is the only American critical work on the late
war, and it is thoroughly critical and entirely divest
ed of all political hue or tone."
This is the only History" of the 'Grand Armv," and
no one who has borne a part in its conflicts, or is in
terested in its grand achievements, should he with
out it. The work sells itself. The people are tired of
political and partizan histories, and want something
from official sources. We have agents clearing over
S2OO per month. Send for circulars, and see our
terms and proof of the above assertion.
