LOCAL AFFAIRS.
RAILROAD ELECTION. —In pursuance
to notice, the Stockholders of the Middle
creek Railroad Company met in the Court
House at Middleburg, on Tuesday, 2d
October. W. F. Eckbert, Gen. Irwin,
and I. Conrad, were appointed election
officers. The follow ing officers were elect
ed.
President —Abner Thompson.
Directors —Joseph Alexander, E. L.
Benedict, Aaron K. Gift, John Hayes,
jr., John A. McKee, Thomas B. Reese,
John I). Romig, Moses Specht, George
Schnure, John S. Smith, William H. We

ACCIDENTS. —Alex. Berlew was consid
erably hurt last Wednesday whilst taking
out ore at the Wattson hank, by the buck
et falling down, cutting him on the head,
breaking a few of his ribs, and otherwise
injuring him.
Wm. Knisely had his hand severely
injured oil Wednesday last at the machine
shop of Reese, Slagle <fe Foust, by being
caught in a strap.
Wm. Beatty cut his foot badly with an
axe on the same day.
THE FISH WAY COMPLETED. —We are
gratified to learn, from the Wrightsville
Star, that there is a fair prospect of a free
passage of shad and other fish up the
Susquehanna, during the next season.
The Star says:
"The schute or fish-way in the dam tie
low this place has been completed by the
Susquehanna canal company, and is now
ready for the purpose for which it was
designed. We suppose the shad will give
it a trial on their next annual migratory
fresh water tour up our stream the ensu
ing spring. If there were any young
shad to descend this fall, as they were
wont to do before dams were built in the
Susquehanna, they could notify their old
folks when they arrive at home in shad
dom, that the track is clear."
The suit tried iu the Snyder county
Court, between Solomon Brooks and the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company, was de
cided a few weeks ago, the Jury render
ing a verdict in favor of the plaintive in
the sum of thirteen thousand dollars.—
This suit-arose out of the accident at
Thompsontown a few years since, and
was removed to Snyder from Juniata
county.
Wm. J. Jackman, has sold the Mifflin
town True Democrat to Mr. Geo. Stroop.
Mr. John Tyson of Mifflintowu captur
ed a bear some time ago, and had him
caged at the lock above that town. On
Saturday night a week, says the Sentinel,
Mr. Bear not liking his close quarters
made his escape by crossing the river to
the Island, and from thence made his way
to the mountain.
John M. McCoy, of Mifflintowu, has
been appointed Foreman of the Second
Division of the Pennsylvania Rail Road
Canal, vice Alex. Cyrus, resigned.
FATAL ACCIDENT. —Mr. Joseph Kurtz,
of East Salem, met with an accident on
Tuesday of last week which terminated
in death on yesterday morning.- He and
his little daughter had been riding in a
spring wagon, and while descending a
hill, some part of the harness broke, when
the horse became frightened and ran oil".
The wagon struck a stump, and Mr. Kurtz
and his little girl were thrown out. The
child escaped injury, but Mr. K. had one
of his legs broken in two places and his
shoulder broken and badly bruised, be
sides, it is thought, sustaining internal
injuries. Medical attendance was imme
diately procured, and he appeared to be
getting along pretty well until Monday
night last, when his shoulder became
rapidly inflamed, and death ended his
sufferings on the following morning. Mr.
Kurtz had been engaged in t£e mercan
tile business at East Salem for a number
of years, and was highly, respected by all
who knew him. His untimely death will
be deeply felt in the community in which
he lived.— Miffiintown Register.
Terrible Casualty.
The Lewisburg Journal has the follow
ing:
On Thursday morning last about six
o'clock, Mr. Andrew Meixell, of Sun bury,
son of Peter Meixell, of this place, was
shot under the following circumstances :
He left home before breakfast, on an
errand, and while passing the lot of a Mr.
Irvin, of Sunbury, noticed some apples
lying on the ground, and jumped over the
fence with the purpose of getting one or
two to eat; he had scarcely done so when
he was fired upon with fatal effect, by a
son of Mr. Irvin's about eighteen years
old. The gun was loaded with small
bird-shot, which took effect in the arm
and breast, penetrating the lungs. The
unfortunate mail managed to get over the
fence and walk a short distance when he
fell and laid until discovered by his friends
and carried home, where he died at six
o'clock in the evening. He was buried
at the cemetery here on Saturday last. —
We forbear any comment on this* terrible
occurrence, as the peqietrator is now in
jail and will answer to the law for the
offense The bereaved friends have our
warmest sympathy in this unexpected
calamity. Mr. Meixell was 26 years and
Hionths old, and leaves a wife and two
children.
Fifteen Car Loads of Coal OU Burned
near Attoona.— The Pittsburg Dispatch of
Tuesday says:
" On Monday evening a destructive fire
occurred about two miles west of Altoona
on the Central Railroad, by which some
fifteen cars loaded witli oil were totally
destroyed. The heat was so intense that
the ties were burned for a considerable,
distance,, and the rails warped, impair
ing the track to such an extent as to de
lay all the trains for four or five hours.
