Some of our young men have been prac ticing at base hall for some weeks, and we presume in a short time we shall have one or more clubs. It is good exercise, but an awful waste of time for those who have work to do. The fence around the town hall lot has been removed, and a pound constructed 011 a smaller scale. This leaves the north eastern end of the market house open, and if filled up level with the market house, i will make a decided improvement. The hack building of Sample's Hotel was discovered by Judge Woods, who was passing there, to he 011 fire on Wednesday last. He gave the alarm, and a hydrant being near, it was extinguished before much damage was done. A valuable cow belonging to Henry Book, was thrown down a rocky embank ment about ten feet high, near Mann's Axe Factory, by the M. A C. train about two weeks since. She lived several days after. A farmer's wife across the river attend ed market one morning last week with some chickens, and in less than ten min utes sold out the whole lot. We have 110 doubt if any one from the country would bring a hundred to market, they can be readily disposed of at from 50 to 75 cents j per pair, according to size and condition. There is 110 charge for occupying space for the sale of such things. There was a big crowd at Van Ani burgh <fc (Jo's menagerie and circus on Iriday last. As usual, those who had of ten seen such exhibitions and expected something of the wunderbar order pro nounced it a humbug, while others who had not got tired of seeing elephants, li ons, ligers, monkeys, &c., and riding in the ring, ground and lofty tumbling, and hearing the clown's jokes, thought it first I rate. A meeting was held in the Town j Hali 011 Monday evening and another last evening, at which some additional subscriptions were made. Seme boys discovered a Porcupine near a public read in Bratton township 011 Sunday last, and a dog with them, not knowing the strange animal he had to deal with, succeeded in killing it, but had his mouth stuck full of the needle point ed quills, which rendered him quite fran fie until with much difficulty they were extracted. The porcupine is a stranger in this county, although numerous to the northward, and this is we believe the b'irst one seen up the river for many years, it was alsut the size of an opossum. -V poor afflicted widow, almost destitute in Monroe township, Miffiin county had about half an acre of who stolen trom her small field this harves by some unmitigated scoundrel. If we hear 01 any meaner trick, we shall be much surprised. We find the above in the Lewisburg Chronicle. I MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.— The Snv „ ( °unty Tribune says: Daniel Swartz aqed ahout 19 years, son of Mr. Elias • unz, residing in Beaver township, this i y -' met with an accident which re • mtetl m instantaneous death. A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.—OII Saturday morning, ,v.)th July, about 8 o'clock a de structive fire occurred in Johnstown, Beale township, which totally consumed the large two story tenement occupied as a dwelling and store house by Hearing & Foltz, with nearly all the contents. The tire originated, we have been informed, as follows: Under the counter stood a large coal oil can, which having been a fixture there for several years, had satu rated the floor pretty thoroughly with thai inflammable material. Several per sons were in the store, smoking cigars and it was thought that a match had been thrown down while burning by one of the smokers, which ignited the saturated part of the floor. Mr. Hearing, who was oll the other side of filestore, noticed the flame immediately, and attempted to extinguish it with a broom, but unfortunately while trying to beat out the flames, hit the spig ot of the can and thus furnished them fresh material. In an instant the store was in a sheet of flames, which quickly broke into the dwelling house, and in a tew minutes the building was a mass of charred and smoking ruins. The fire was so sudden and made such rapid progress, that nothing was saved from the store hut the "journal," which had not been posted for about a month. Some of the household property was saved. The loss real and personal by the fire is estimated at $5,000, 011 which there is an insurance of $2,000. — Mijfflintoum. Republican. ftsS" Rev. E. S. Sheip, pastor of the (Ter. Ret. The Indianapolis Herald ot a recent date says: 'One of the most fatal and astonish ing cases of tickling a child which lias come within our knowledge, was en acted night before last by a woman living on Massachusetts avenue, upon her daughter, a girl about fourteen years old. Ibe mother had been up town to witness the rope-walking feat, and upon returning home commenced playing with and tickling her daught er. \Y bother she took that as a mode of punishing the child, or was doing it for mere amusement, we are unable to say; hut she tickled the child until it was completely exhausted, and con tinued until the child, in struggling to free herself, bursted a blood-vessel, and a short time after expired.' Huntingdon, August 1, 1866.-2t. PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE GREAT Civil War in the United States, BY BENSON J. LOSSING. GEORGE IF. GUILDS, Publisher, 648 &. 630 CHESTNUT ST., Philadelphia, Penn'a. The first volume of this work is now ready for delivery ; it will be completed in three volumes, of over 600 pages each, printed on fine calendered paper, and" handsomely illustrated with nearly 2<00 fine steel and wood Engravings, in the highest style of the art, from designs by Mr. Lossing,i who in their preparation lia's traveled 20,000 miles,) representing head quarters of officers; weapons and ships of war; forts, arsenals, medals of honor, and other gifts of gratitude; costumes of sol diers, arms and accoutrements; prisons and other buildings made memorable by the war ; facsimiles of important docu ments and autograph letters ; maps of bat tle fields, sieges and plans of fortresses— the whole illustrating every important event in the late civil war. The work, when finished, will be the most correct, reliable, impartial and hand somely gotten-up history of the war pub lished. The three volumes will be issued at a cost of $50,000. It ha- N- u written since the conclusion of tb ie , from both Union and Confederal< of/icia!documents, and private journals of off icers of both ar mies, not accessible to, nor used by previ ous writers ; arranged in a clear and con cise manner, with that impartial and well-balanced judgment for which the author is so well known. Mr. Lossing had every facility offered him by special direction of the War and Navy Depart ments, Governors of States, and by the late and present President, for visiting cam j >s, forts and fleets, while the war was in progress and since the conclusion. The work will contain biographical sketches, in Cyclopedia form, of all the prominent actors in the war, of both scare*, and in every condition in life. This is a book of facts rather than of opinions, and fully sustains the reputa tion of the author, established by his " PICTORIAL FIELD BOOK OF THE "REV OLUTION." Price $5.00 per volume. SOLD EXCLUSIVELY BY SUBSCRIPTION. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. New York• Herald. We can assert with truth that it is the first conscientiously written history of the war that has been given to the world since its close, it is neither one-sided as to its facts nor as to its conclusions. New York Times. Mr. Lossing possesses some peculiar qualifications for the preparation of a his tory of the war. To untiring industry, lie unites a quick seuse of that which po sesses interest and attractiveness for the multitude. His pen and pencil are alike faithful and accurate in reproducing men and the scenes in which they were ac tors. New York Tribune. To any one who is familiar with Mr. Lossing's other works, it is hardly neces sary to say that the materials for the pres ent one have been gathered and selected with eminent industry and good judg ment, and put together with the skill of an accomplished writer. The book is a rich storehouse of historical facts, and moreover a very enticing volume to read. It is so different from all the other histo ries of the war, that it cannot readily be compared with them. JAMES M. LABHELL, aul.4t Ag't for Mifflin Co., Penn'a. SB Wt LO.
