•/ ii a&aaif tfa, LOCAL AFFAIRS. XjF In our statement of Mr. McCord's m*ptioa in Alabama, our informant was wroU g as to notice having been given him nJt to returu. Mr. McCord has testimo- a j a ii of his worth from the planters where he was engaged, who warmly desired his coming back. The other statements of threats, &C., when he arrived are correct, notwithstanding the attempts of Jef Da vis'; special advocate to discredit them.— It may not be amiss to add that these tochers are supplied and paid by an as sociation of Northern men of that class whom copperheads style disunionists. POSTMASTERS. —The U. S. Senate last week confirmed the nominations of E. C. Hamilton as Postmaster at Lewistown; J. Bingham, Hollidayshurg; John Read, Huntingdon; G. W. Patton, Altoona; and £. Roberts, Johnstown. The cops here, who had hoped by their hyprocritical prolusion of Johnsonism to control these offices, are thus left in the mud and cold, gic semper officehunters. i PICNIC. —The members of the Mendles aoliti Association who intend going to the picnic, to be held at Creighton's grove to-morrow, are requested to take their baskets to the Town Hall this eve/liny.— All are expected to be at the Main street crossing by 7| a. 111. Thursday. A grand hop or cotillion party is to comeotf on Thursday evening, 2d August, at the Duncan House, Milroy. The winds accompanying storms du ring the past week have been unusually high, blowing down trees, fences, &c. A hand of Gipsies have been rusticating in this county for some weeks, pursuing their usual business of fortune telling, trading horses, &c. The Cincinnati Express east is now a daily train, and passes this place at 6.22 p. m. Some other slight changes have been made. There is a great saving of halves and quarters going on just now among folks of all degrees —some probably being desi rous of seeing the menagerie, others the circus, and a good many both. We learn that Wnt Riden (residing in Mill Street,) and several of his family were thrown out of a carriage on Sunday last in Ferguson's valley, and most of them bruised or otherwise injured. The I hor-e took fright, ran away, and did eou- I sklerablt injury to the carriage. I At the meeting on Saturday afternoon, I (/"f. J. A. Mathews, L'apt. Win. B. We- I ber, and Lieut. G. Waters were appoint- I *1 to attend the Clymer convention at [Hariisburg to-day. It seems PRIVATES I are convenient articles both in the army and in politics to bolster up officers. A soldiers county meeting was held in I the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon to ■ appoint delegates to the Clymer meeting lat Harrisburg to-day. Thirty-six persons ■ were present. A mass meeting of ten I times that number assembled towards I evening at Weber's corner—to see a fight. j Milroy Lodge of Good Templars was I organized on Monday evening by Rev. ■ Downs and a delegation from Woods I Lodge. These lodges are doing much ■ good, and any man, woman, girl or boy, I who has theslighest hankering for liquor, I ought to become a member. A young man named Houtz, A"as ■ drowned in the Kisliacoquillas creek, ■ near Yeagertown, on Friday evening, I while bathing. He got into a deep hole ■ and sank, and although two others were ■ near, aiul made efforts by diving and ■ otherwise, at least an hour elapsed before I his hodv was recovered. He was we be ■ iieve an orphan, raised in Juniata county, ■ and was living with Yeager's at the time I of the accident. ■ Howard E. Snyder, son of Jacob Sny ■ 'ler, Esq., of Hollidaysburg, fell off the ■ *hip Rainbow, and was drowned in the I Indian Ocean, 011 the 23<1 of May last. k-rU ('apt. Geo. W. I B-®L Vallandigham has been appointed ■ a delegate to the Philadelphia convention. ■ Davis and Breckinridge ought to be ndd- I ed to represent tiie South at large. ■ The Senate has confirmed Grant ■ as General, the highest grade in the ar- IH my. Sherman as Lieutenant General, Farragut as Admiral, and David D. Por t.r :is Rear Admiral. B®l'resident Johnson approved the res olutions of Congress admitting the Ten-j nessee delegation with a protest. As his protest is worth no more than other man's, ! he can take it out in protesting all the IS tune, so that he signs the bills passed. The woodwork of the new Rail- : road Bridge across the Susquehanna river ! at Havre deGrace, Md., was blown down by a storm on Wednesday last. On the same evening hail fell in Lancaster coun ty large as hen's eggs. fit The President has attempted to remove Col. \\ in. B. Thomas, the oldest man in the State who raised and com manded a regiment in the war as Coffee ■ t l or . of Philadelphia, and give Ex-Gov. ■ Johnston the office. 3fi% The report of the Judiciary C'oni mittee in Congress leaves no room for doubt ol' the complicity of Jef. Davis in President Lincoln's assassination. Docu ment* from the rebel archives offering to do this work by different parties, bear Davis' endorsement, referring them to his Secretary of War. The work of hell's fiends seems to be progressing, a large number of negroes having been murdered in cold blood at Aew Orleans on Monday, under the pat ronage of the rebel Mayor and his police. Gen. Baird has proclaimed martial law, and martial law has also been re-instated m Georgia in consequence of the brutali ty exercised by white scoundrels aud out laws. mThe southern sympathisers ruling have removed the tasnier J. M. Marshall, who had held the post for 35 years. From a statement 1 We think il wou id be vania noteH out of Pennsyl- Sundry copperheads who have S, f M Congress to pass laws in fa\or of Soldiers, at the same time con tend that its laws are unconstitutional, because the rebel States have 110 repre sentation. The soldier who ever expects bounty through rebel votes must be Doth green and soft. SOT The new constitution of North Carolina provides that 44 No person who shall deny the being of Almighty God, or the divine autlioritv of the Old and New Testaments, or who shall hold reli gious opinions incompatible with the freedom a>ul safety of the State , shall be capable of holding any office or place of trust or profit in any civil department of the State." That sounds like a blue law. A Wife Wanted. —Somebody who wants a wife published the following advertisement in a St. Louis paper : Wanted —l have lived solitary long enough. I want some one to talk.a?, quarrel with—then kiss and make up again. Therefore, I am ready to re ceive communications from young la dies and blooming widows of more than average respectability, tolerably tame in disposition, and hair of any eoior. Money is 110 object as I never was troubled with it, and never ex pect to be. I should like some lady who is perfectly able to support a hus band, or if she could introduce me to a family where religious examples would be considered sufficient com pensation for board, it would be just as well. Three Brothers Suffocated. —On Tues day last three brothers named Mead, living at Lewisborough, Westchester county, N. Y., were suffocated by the foul air of an old well on the farm of one of them. One of the brothers, in attempting to draw water from it, had occasion to descend, and was suffoca ted. WORKS OF NATURE, In a state of health the intestinal canal may be com pared to a river whose waters flow over the adjoiuing | land, through the channels nature or art has made, ; and improve their qualities; so long as it runs on ! smoothly the channels are kept pure and healthy ; if the course of the river is stopped, then the water in the canals is no longer pure, but soon becomes stag nant. 1 here is but one la* of circulation in nature. \\ hen there is a superabundance of humorial fluid in the intestinal tubes, and costiveness takes place, it flows back into the blood vessels, and infiltrates itself into the circulation. To establish the free course of the river, we must remove the obstructions which stop its free course, and those of its tributary streams. With the body, follow the same natural principles— remove the obstruction- from the bowels with BRAN DRETH'S PILLS, which never injure, but are al ways effectual for the perfect cleansing of the system from foulness or disease. Remember, never suffer a drop of blood to be taken from you. Evaeuate the humors as often and as long as they are deranged, or as long as you are sick. See that B.
