EWING, Attorney at LaW) ad street, Harrisburg. 3t ACCIDENTS. —A cow owned by Robert \V. Shaw was run over by the cars on the >l. & C. R. R- on Wednesday last, and had both its hind legs broken, and was otherwise bruised. A cow belonging to Judge Woods choked on an apple on Monday night last, and was found dead in the field next morning. The Mifflin and Centre train ran off the track the other day at Mann's Axe Fac tory, but all hands we believe escaped without injury. We hear it stated that Gabriel Lehr's family, at Mt. Rock Mills, were poisoned by eating rice soup. All the family were taken sick, as well as a Mr. Emory who boards there. The mere eating of rice soup could not produce such an effect, and it was probably caused by something mixed in the rice, or the utensil in which it was cooked. ICE.— During the hot days of last week many no doubt felt the want of ice, and those who have it appreciate it as a sum mer luxury. Peter Ort continues to sup ply our citizens, and all who do not take it should engage at once. ROBBERY. —Loop's shoe store was en tered on Saturday or Sunday night, and things generally thrown about the shop. Some of the goods were removed, but what quantity we did not learn. On Thursday night a week, we learn from the Democrat, some persons entered the dwelling house of John Hays, and stole a valuable gold watch and S3OO in money. The watch was taken from un der Mr. Hays' pillow. The same night K. M. Kinsloe's house was entered and S6O taken therefrom. DEATHS.—George Sigler, Esq., of De catur township, died quite suddenly last week while sitting in a chair. Matthew B. Taylor, of Brown town ship, who visited Minnesota lately for the benefit of his health, died at Lake City a few weeks ago. His remains were brought home for interment. BAD BOYS. —A few weeks ago eight lashes were cut off' of a new fly net on a horse hitched at Frank's store, it be longed to Mr. Huffnagle of Derry town ship, and we hear he is willing to pay a reward for the rascals who did the mis chief. The House of Refuge ought to have at least a dozen of young scamps from this town in it, in which case there would be less malicious mischief carried on. THE MACHINE STILL PUFFING. — D. Grove has just received a new supply of those good Mess Mackeral. They can't lie beat, some of them weighing three pounds. He has also cut a new cheese, which is superior.to any he has had this year. Call and see his stock; you need not go anywhere else, for he has what you want, from a toothpick to a hogshead of sugar. Especially if you need toilet arti cle.-, he has just opened several storeboxes of toilet soap, perfumery, <fce., &c. And last but not least is bis ice cream. Try it, and you'll lie sure to go again, for he does make an excellent article, we bet. GREAT WANT. —We hear the ladies of this place complaining greatly of the scarcity of domestics. Large numbers of housekeepers have no help, and tho' the full price for such services is offered, and of course would be promptly paid, girls are not to be had. If there are any in the country or neighborhood, or in the ad joining villagesor towns, who understand the ordinary duties of domestics, and de sire good places and fair wages, let them come to Hollidaysburg and we have no doubt they can secure for themselves good employers and good homes. Fifty, at least, are wanted at present.—HoUhlayx burg Standard. Domestics are also scarce here, though hundreds of girls from twelve years up ure daily running about the streets, who do not earn the salt they eat at home. When we were a boy, the rule among all classes was that each boy was to earn his spending money for the year during corn planting, haymaking and harvest. I f pa rents here and elsewhere were to compel girls to earn their dresses, icecream, cake and candy money by honest labor, they would spend less, dress less, and make better wives than most of them do. As it is, thousands of fathers and mothers are mere slaves to the vanity and pride of their children, who think it dishonor able and disgraceful to do that which their parents do daily. A Horse belonging to Eli Price was considerably injured last week by a shaft running into him under the fore should er. A piece of paper thrown on the' street, and suddenly blown up by the wind, frightened him, causing the acci dent. Mathews & Grimminger, butchers, have also taken a stall at the market house, so that nearly all the butchers are there now. In addition to the others Peters and Griffith attended market with vegetables on Saturday morning. Weather pleasant, with cool nights. John Dysart of Alexandria, Hunting don county, was thtown from his timber wagon on the 11th, and so severely in jured that he died on the 13th. MENAGERIE AND CIRCUS.— Van Am burgh & CO'K famous collection of Wild Animals and other curiosities will be ex hibited at Lewistown on Friday a week, August 3d, when of course everybody will call to see it. Visitors have an hour or more to see the animals, when those who do not care for circus performances can vamose the ranche. Our exchanges all speak of these exhibitions as orderly, and of the proprietors and attaches as gentle manly and obliging, in fact we know the former to be so—from which it may be inferred that they desire to give a quid pro quo for the 50 cents admittance. It will exhibit at Belleville in this county on Thursday, August 2d. B®„Johii Hippie, of the Black Horse Hotel, yesterday presented us with some half dozen fine tomatoes—the largest of which weighed nearly two pounds—hav ing raised them in his garden a little ahead of the gardeners al>out town. His patch is a curiosity, and we judge will yield 40 or 50 bushels. A lady known as Mrs. Weston, died quite suddenly at the United States Ho tel, Hollidaysburg, week before last. She was found in bed with her head and arms hanging over the side. She is said to have been the wife of an agent of a New York firm. Railroad Meeting. According to notice, the citizens of De catur township met at St roup's scliol house on Saturday evening, July 14th, to take into consideration the project of the Middle Greek Railroad. Col. Win. Reed was chosen President, and A. 31. Ingram Secretary. The object of the meeting be ing stated by Mr. Taggart, books were opened and subscriptions to the amount of $5,750 taken. There was great interest manifested by those present, and there is no doubt but that the amount of subscrip tion will be doubled. After the books were closed, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted. Whereas, a charter has been granted by the Legisla ture to construct a Railroad from Selins grove, Snyder county, to Lewistown, Mif flin county, to be called the Middle Creek Railroad, and believing the said road would greatly enhance the value of prop erty in Decatur township; therefore Resolved , That as citizens of Decatur township, we approve of the sjeedy sur vey and completion of this Railroad, and will use all possible efforts to effect tiie same. Resolved, That we have implicit confi dence in the men who have undertaken to carry it through, and that we will sec ond the effort by releasing our land, and subscribing to the stock. WM. REED, Pres't. A. M. INGRAM, Sec'y. Raymond of the New York Times says the idea that the President will use force to compel the admission of Southern rebels to Congress, " is purely an inven tion, or at best the crazy dream of a polit ical nightmare," and then turns round anil charges Congress with entertaining a project to use force against Johnson ! This crazy dream or political nightmare is weekly suggested by papers claiming to be Johnsonian, by rebel papers, by dem ocratic papers, and was endorsed by the Reading convention of copperjohns. In a state of health the intestinal canal may be com pared to a river whose waters flow overthe adjoining land, through the channels nature or art lias made, and improve their qualities; so long as it runs on smoothly the channels are kept pure and healthy; if the course of the river is stopped, then the water in the canals is no longer pure, but soon becomes stag nant. There is but one law of circulation in nature. When there is a superabundance of humorial fluid in the intestinal tubes, and costiveness takes place, it j flows back into the blood vessels, and infiltrates itself into the circulation. To establish the free course of the river, we must remove the obstructions which j stop its free course, and those of its tributary streams. With the body, follow the same natural principles— remove the obstructions from the bowels with BRAN DItETH'3 PILLS, which never injure, but are al ways effectual for the perfect cleansing of the system from foulness or disease. Remember, never suffer a drop of blood to be taken from you. Evacuate the humors as often and as long as they are deranged, or as long as you are sick. See that B. TKOXELL, of Lewistown, a firm and undeviuting Union man, is re commended to the Union party of Mifflin county, as a suitable candidate for the of fice or Associate Judge. MANY CITIZENS. SeaF" The Johnsonites, finding that Ran dall's invitation to Southern delegates smells rather strong, have it is reported determined to exclude active rebels from the Philadelphia convention. If they will exclude them as well as northern copperheads, the convention may go ahead and be—dashed. We thought there was something wrong, as the blather skites of democracy are not half as much Johnson as they were a few weeks ago. Bgn,> The cop papers, from the Philadel phia Age down, pretend to a great deal of soreness because Clymer was not invited to attend the flag presentation at Phila delphia on the 4th. What in the name of common sense Clymer would want at a Union military celebration, is more than we can imagine, as he hadn't much admiration for such scenes during the war. J6erT The Democrat always quotes the Philadelphia Daily Newsasa Republican paper. As the News and Democrat are pulling at the same teat, praising the same copperjohns, and l>oth in favor of the Johnson practice that treason is no crime, t here can t be any of the leaven of repub licanism about it. The truth is the News sees Bread and Butter ahead—hence the trim of its sails. The National Republican, a new Johnson paper established at Williams port by P. 8. Dunham, takes the copper head view of the Constitutional Amend ments by asserting that the one making all equal before the law confers suffrage on negroes. As another explicitly recog nizes the rights of States to regulate suf frage, such an assertion is either the re sult of ignorance or political knavery, as no man in his senses who will read the different amendments submitted can come to such a conclusion. fiUL. Lieut. Cen. Grant has just issued an order directing all militarv command ers stationed in the late rebellious States to arrest all persons who have been, or may hereafter be, guilty of offence against any citizens of the United States, irres pective of color, in all cases where the civil tribunals have failed to bring such parties to trial, ami to detain them until some decisive action is taken by the courts in their cases. As this is a virtual declaration of martial law, it strikes us that the reconstructed require a great deal of military rule to keep them in order. Since the great success of my cemented paper rings for closing Fruit Cans, soine have thought to drift into the same current of success by infringing upon my patent. Some cans longer patented than mine, on which gum had been used under their pat ent arrangement, are now making their appearance with cemented paper rings, instead of the gum form erly used. r i teumry stores, while the manufacturers in the cities have for the most part concealed their work. This is to notify the public that the use of cemented paper, pressed upon the top of a fruit can, daring the heated state of the fruit, so that when cold it is perfectly sealed, is an infringement upon my rights, unless used upon a can having a cap with my name stamped upon it. Any kind of cement upon this paper, undergoing a pro cess of pressure during the cooling of the fruit, comes in contact with my patents, dated Nov. 12,1861. Aug. 19,1862. March 22, 1804.
