The river bridge had a narrow es. c ue trom destruction by fire on Wed no-day afternoon last. A locomotive with a heavy train came across, which ot course required more than ordinary power to overcome the grade, and in addition to a den.se smoke, scattered fire too large tor sparks throu_.li the bridge. One of these lodged on the timbers below where the weather hoarding commences, but had nt ac quired headway when* Mr. Dufur pass ed the second span, so that he could hive seen il through the smoke Fot - Innately Mrs. D. was standing near the bridge, and seeing a flickering of flame, ran to the spot and did her best with her skuker in getting water from a tub to extinguish it. A powerful draught however sent the flames up several feet, and hud Mr. D, who heard her alarm when at the farther end ot the bridge arrived a few min utes later il would have been in flume to the root ihe least the railroad company can do in this case is to fur nish Mrs. D. with a new bonnet, for she undoubtedly earned it. The fires which have already taken place show that an imperative necessi ty exists for Us ng good spark catch Cis and using a gieat deal of care in running through the borough limits for it a tire were to break out in Wa ter street with a high southern or southwest wind, there is no telling where the destruction of properly would end.
