J. H. HARTZMK. BeUtvilU, Mifflin Gninft', Editor. AROUSED. One of our fellow teach ers —and by the way, one of the besl teachers in the county —was noticed after one of the evening sessions o: the Teachers' Association at McVev town, seated alone in a corner of the hotel sitting room, and in a 'brown study.' lie was'brought to' bytheuir ceremonious question, 'What's wrong M. ?' Disconsolate rep!}': T used to have the opinion that I knew some thing, and that I could teach pretty well, but I have discovered that 1 know nothing and can't teach at all.' Like many others, he had been thoroughly aroused by the earnest, practical, and yet eloquent words uttered that even ing bv Prof. Wiekersham. Just here lie some of the most obvious benefits of teachers' meetings; teachers come together, an admirable professional feeling is often the result, they become acquainted, they learn to respect one another, they are aroused, from broad er, truer, and nobler conceptions ol the nature and importance of their mission. The crust or shell, alluded to by Prof. \\ ~is rubbed off, if it have made its appearance. The broader and more genial social sympathies are brought into play, and thu sotnei bing i-. d-usc to avert the danger of their be coming the dry and marrow charac ters 'upon whom,' as Pr< f W. happily remarked, 'voir can see teacher ! teach er ! teacher! written all around.' For the Educational Column. A Serious Evil. NO. 11. I believe every country school teach er of experience will bear me out in saying that in every district, having an aggregate school-going population of forty children, there should be one sehool-house and one teacher, and that when the aggregate attendance of any school greatly exceeds forty, an assis tant teacher is needed. Now this fact —for it undoubtedly is a fact—needs to be impressed upon the minds ot school directors and all others whose duty it is to supply the educational wants ot the community. To place from sixty to eighty pupils (or even ninety, as is now being done in at least one instance, in this county,) in the hands of one teacher and to expect of him that he shall effectually govern them and give them all needed in struction in the alphabet, spelling, reading, writing, arithmetic, mental and written, geography, grammar, and what ii"l else, is the sheerest folly, an outrage upon common sense Ami the offense is greatly aggravated when children, in such large numbers are put into dark, cold and dingy school rooms, with miserable funilure, with no plav-ground without and totally in sufficient room within to accommodate them comfortably. It is idle to expect that children who. arc compelled to at tend schools cf this kind will ever love learning or make satisfactory progress, even though taught by a capable aqd devout teacher. Some pupils will in evitably be neglected, and the wants of all will be but poorly met. Knowl edge will be acquired in mere driblets, recitations wil be few in number and ot inadequate length, and the most harassing labors performed by the teacher with the poorest results. None but a teacher, perhaps, can fully com prehend the difficulties of such "a posi tion, how constant the care and anxi ety, how severe the labor of discipline and instructions, and how keenly must be felt the cold neglect or unfriendly criticism with which such necessarily fruitless labors are sometimes reward ed. It is asking too much of human na ture to bear such insufficient school ac commodations in a wealthy agricultu ral district without at least a firm pro tost. ihe p oplo have a right to de mand that their children shall be sup p.ied with I ctter educational facilities it is to be hoped, for the credit of our country, that instances of such flag rant neglect are rare, but I know, from some positive experience and observa tion, that a number of schools and school-houses of the kind alluded to do exist in the midst of abundant wealth. But the evil is not without a remedy. Let teachers and parents assert them selves. Let directors rise to a true comprehension of the magnitude and importance of their duties" Lot them build school-houses in sufficient num bers and of such a kind as will be an honor to themselves and the country And above all, wherever that is prac ticable, let them grade the schools IX 11.
