Goon TEMPLARS.—A second Lodge
of this order was organized in this
place on Friday evening last. By this
we know that the work is progressing
here, and have hope that much good
will yet be accomplished.
The membership of the old Lodge
is still increasing, and when the new
one gets fairly under way, the combin
ed forces will make king alcohol trem
ble. The order was named Woods
Lodge, iti respect to the memory of
the late Dr. Woods, a firm friend of the
Temperance cause. The officers are as
follows.

THE STATE TAX.— The Commission
ers we learn have made, or intend to
make, application to the Legislature to
authorize them to collect the three
mills assessed for State purposes, which
has been released by the iegi>laiure,
and appropriate the same to county
pumoves. i here is we tind much oh
■ i lioii to tins movement; lirst, on the
ground that the commissioners have
already levied in this year's tax a sum
sufficient to pay off about 810,000 of
the bounty debt; and second, that to
numerous tenants who pay half or the
whole of taxes on property they oceu
pv, tiie design of the Legislature would
be entirely defeated, as all these ten
ants would thus be paying out of their
labor taxes which belong to and would
ultimately come from the prop* rty
This objection is certainly a vuiid one,
to instance which we know of one case,
where if will make a difference of
We make the fact known, so that those
interested may take measures to conn
teract the movement, if they are dis
satisfied with the action of the com
missioners.

Robert MeNeal and Capt. James M
Wix broke into Tusearora creek below
Acidemia a few weeks ago. MeNeal
got a soaking in the cold water and '
came near drowning. The horse and
i buggy went under and were lost.
A collision this side of Patterson
occurred on Saturday a week, by which 1
Lewis Durnbach had his leg broken,
and Charles A. Willuughby, a lad of 15
from Huntingdon, had his head badly
injured, and John Brumbaugh, aged
14, from the same place, had his right
foot injured. The boys were dead
heading their passage to Harrisburg.
David Owens, of Spruce Creek,
Huntingdon county, met with a heavy
loss on Friday night a week. He had
sold out his store and had with bim in
his bed room about 87,000, all of which
I was taken some time during the night. I
