2H 3 GAZETTE. LOCAL AFFAIRS Relief and Poor House Business. The Relief Board meets on the Third Fri day of eaeh month at the Comtniss oners' Office, and the Relief Orders are issued on the last Saturday of eaeh month. The Directors of the Poor meet at the Poor House on the 2d Monday of each month. or two boys, not too young, who can board at home, will be taken temporarily, perhaps on time, to learn the printing business. THE DRAFT. —The evils of the boun ty system are now falling upon the rural districts with great severity—so much so that few men liable to draft will be left in our boroughs or town ships by the 15th. Of the 172 enrolled men in this borough more than one half have already left, and the remain, der are ready to go Of course no fault can be found with them when the alternative of volunteering with a bounty or a draft without a bounty is presented, yet we suspect this depopu lation of the interior will do much to wards bringing Philadelphia cityand the eastern counties who are ruining them selves by debt, to a sense of their folly by a heavy decrease in business and products .of every descriptions, which in the end must affect them. The quota of this borough will bo considerably larger than we anticipa ted, in consequence of several districts not having men enough to fill theirs, though where the men are to come from even here by the 15th is beyond our ken. We learn that the calculation is that it will take one out of four, which would require Lewistown to fur nish between 43 and 50 men. R<sU The Junior Editor of the Ga zette left on Monday last with Capt. Selheimer's company, and by this time is probably enrolled in the service of his country. His absence leaves us in a precarious way in the office, but we will endeavor to do the best we can until better arrangements can be made. THE WINTER continues with only a slight mitigation of the cold we have had since the middle of December, and the ground continues covered with a coat of ice and snow, still affording good sleighing. Spring will soon be here, and we look for some pleasant days, though if the ground hog is to he relied on it will not come for six weeks from Candlemas day, that sober looking fellow having seen his shadow, returned to his comfortable quarters, and is now snoozing away a two score and two days' nap ere he will again show his phiz. Snow commenced falling -yesterday morning and continued until last night, covering the ground to the depth of about one foot. FIRE. — The frame school house, ad joiningthe Lutheran church, in Armagh township, a few miles east of Milroy, was totally destroyed by fire on Thurs day night a week. The fire probably resulted from placing kindling wood upon or near the stove. SELLING OFF.—S. are selling oft" winter goods, such as Mennoes, Wool Delaines, Coburghs, Fluids, Ladies' Cloth, Shawls, Hoods, Blankets, Flannels, Linsey, Cloths, Overcoats, &c., &c., AT GREATLY REDUCED PRICES. ITEMS.— We learn that the Exchange Hotel, Hollidaysburg, but recently purchased by Samuel Aultz, formerly of this place, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour on Thursday morning, with nearly all its contents. Many of the inmates made narrow es capes with their lives. There was we believe no insurance, anu Mr. Aultz's loss is therefore very severe. OUR SOLDIERS.— On the Ist of Sep tember last, we learn from the Demo crat, Ambrose Johnson, a young man who had been raised by Judge Stine, of Wayne township, volunteered, and joined company A of the 12th Penna cavalry. On the night of the 19th of December, whilst on picket duty in f barleston, \ a., he was shot and in stantly killed, during an attack made by Mosehy's guerrillas.
