    THE
RECIPES.
S<ft Cookies. —Take one coffee cup
of" butter, three of sugar, one of thick
cream, and four eggs; mix the butter
and sugar, and then theeggsand cream, j
Take a pint of sifted flour and a tea
spoonful of soda, mix well, and stir in
to the other ingredients sufficient of I
it to make the paste or dough stiff •
enough to roll out, cut it into squares, j
impress with a fancy mould, and hake
in a slow oven. Caraway seed and ,
ground coriander seed are often used
io flavor these biscuits called 'cookies.' j
Composition I'udding —One and a
half cups molasses, one cup of chopped
suet, two cups of rnilk, two teaspoons
of soda, and flour enough to make a
pretty stiff batter. Boil steadily one
hour. Ginger may be added if desi-;
rable.
French Cake. —One tablespoonful of j
butter, two cups of sugar, two and a
half cups of flour, four eggs, one tea
spoonful of soda, two of cream tartar ;
and a half cup of milk.
A Model Composition-
To boys and girls, who are perplexed i
to know what to write about, and how to ;
write it, when required by their teacher
to bring a "composition," we commend the
following model:
WINTER. —Winter, is the coldest sea- ;
son of the year, because it comes in the j
winter. In some countries winter comes j
in summer, and then it is very pleasant. I
wish winter came in summer in this coun
try. Tbeu I could go skating barefoot, and
slide down the hill in linen trowsers. We
could snow-bail without our fingers getting
cold—and men who go out sleigh riding J
wouldn't have to stop at every tavern to j
warm, as they do now. It snows more in !
winter than it does in any other season of
the year. This is because so many cutters '
and sleighs are made at that time.
Ice grows much better in winter than j
summer, which was an inconvenience be- '
lore the discovery of ice houses. Water
that is left out of doors is apt to freeze j
at this season. Some people take in their 1
wells and cistern on a cold night, and
keep them by the fire, so they do not
freeze.
Skating is great fun in winter. The
boys get their skates on when the river is
frozen over, and race, play tag, break through
the ice and get wet all over (they get
drowned sometimes,) fall and break their
heads, and enjoy themselves in many other
ways. A wicked boy once borrowed my
skates and ran off with them, and I couldn't
catch him. Mother said a judgment would
overtake him one day. Judgment will
have to be pretty lively on its legs if it does,
for he runs bully.
There ain't much sleigh riding except
in the winter—lolks don't seem to care
much about it in warm weather. The grown
boys and girls like to go sleigh riding.
The boys generally drive with one hand,
and help the girls to hold their muffs with
the other. Brother Bob let me go along a
little way once when he took Celia Crane
out a sleigh riding, and I thought he paid
more attention to holding the muff than he
did to holding the horses.
Snow balling is another sport. I have
snow-balled iu summer, but we used stones
and hard apples. It isn't so amusing as
it is in winter somehow
But enough I have dashed off these
little things about winter while sister is
getting ready for school. Good bye.

THE WORLD'S GREAT REMEDY FOR
Bcrofula and Scrofulous Diseases.
From Emery Files, a well-known merchant of Ox
ford, Maine.
" I hare sold large quantities of your SARSAPA
UII.LA, but never yet one bottle which failed of the
desired effect and full satisfaction to those who took
it. As fast as our people try it., they agree there has
been no medicine like it bciore in our community."
f Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches, Pustules, Ul
cers, Sores, and all Diseases of the Skin.
From Her. Itobt. Strait on, Uristol, England.
" I only do my duty to you and the public, when
1 add my testimony to that you publish of the me
diciual virtues of your SAKSAPAKILLA. My daugh
ter, aged ten, had an afflicting humor in her ears,
eyes, and hair for years, which we were unable to
cure until we tried your SAKSAI'ARILLA. She has
been well for some months."
From Mrs. Jane. E. nice, a well-known atul much
e deemed lady of DennisvHle, Cape May Co., X.J.
" My daughter has suffered for a year past with a
scrofulous eruption, which was very troublesome.
Nothing alio riled any relief until we tried your
S.VKSAPABII.LA, which soou completely cured her."
From Charles P. Caye, Esq., of the wide/y-knoivn
Gage, Murray if Co., manufacturers of enamelled
papers in Hashua, .V. 11.
" I had for several years a very troublesome
humor in my faee, which grew constantly worse
until it disfigured my features and became an intol
erable affliction. 1 tried almost every thing a man
could of both advice and inedk-iue, but without any
relief whatever, until I took your SAR.SAPAUII.I.A.
It immediately made my face worse, as you told me
it might for a time; but in a few weeks the new
skin began to form under the blotches, and con
.tinued until my face is as smooth as any body's,
and 1 ani without any symptoms of the disease that
1 know of. 1 enjoy ]>erfert health, and without a
doubt owe it to your SARSAPARILLA."
Erysipelas —General Debility—Purity the
Blood.
From T)r. llobt. Sairin, Houston St., Hew York.
" DR. AVER. I seldom fail to remove Eruptions
and Scrofulous Sores by the persevering use of your
| S ARSAL'ARII.LA, and 1 have just now cured an attack
; of Malignant Erysipelas with it. No alterative wo
possess*equals the SARSAPARILLA you have sup
| plied to the profession as well as to tlie people."
I From J. E. Johnston. Esq., Wukcman, Ohio.
"For twelve years, I had the yellow Krysipelas
on niv right arm, during which time I tried all the
celebrated physicians 1 could reach, and took hun
dreds of dollars worth of medicines. The ulcers
were so bad that the cords became visible, and the
doctors decided that my arm must be amputated. 1
began taking your SARSAPARILLA. Took two bot
tles, and some of your PILLS. Together they have
cured me. lam now as well and sound as any body.
Being in a public place, my case is known to every
bodv in this community, aud excites the wonder of
ail. 4
From Hon. Henry Monro, M. P. P., of Xeweastle,
C. IF., a leading member of the Canadian Parlia
ment.
"I have used your SARSAPARILI.A in my family,
for general debility, aud for purifying the blood,
with very beneficial results, and feci continence in
commending it to the afflicted."
St. Anthony's Fire, Rose, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Sore Eyes.
From Harvey Sickler, Esq., the able editor of the
Tiinkhannock Democrat, Pennsylvania.
" Our only child, about three years of age, was
attacked by pimples on his forehead. They rapidly
spread until they formed a loathsome aud virulent
sore, which covered his face, aud actually blinded
his eyes for some days. A skilful physician applied
nitrate of silver and other remedies, without any
apparent effect. For fifteen days we guarded his
hands, lest with them he should tear open the fes
tering and corrupt wound which covered his whole
faee. Uaviug tried every thing else we hud any
hope from, we began giving your SARSAPARILLA,
and applying the iodide of potash lotion, as you
direct. The sore begau to heal when we had given
the first bottle, and was well when we had finished
the second. The child's eyelashes, which had eoni
j out, grew again, and lie is now us healthy and fair
as any other. The whole neighborhood predicted
that the child must die."
Syphilis and Mercurial Disease.
From l>r. Hiram Sloat, of St. Louis, Missouri.
" I find your SARSAPARILLA a more effectual
remedy lor the seeoudarv symptoms of Syphilis
nnd for syphilitic disease than any other we possess.
The profession are indebted to you for some oi" the
best medicines we have."
From A. J. French, M. J)., an eminent physician of
Isiwrence, Mass., who is n prominent member of
the Legislature of Massachusetts.
"DR. AYER. My dear SIR: I have found vour
SARSAPARILLA an excellent remedy for Syphilis,
both of the piimary and secondary type, and effec
tual iu some cases that were too obstinate to yield
to other remedies. Ido not know what we can em
ploy with more certainty of success, where a power
ful alterative is required."
Mr. Chas. S. Fan Lie jr, of Hew Brunswick, X.J.,
had dreadful ulcers on his legs, caused by the abuse
of mercury, or mercurial disease, which grew more
and more "aggravated for years, iu spite of every
remedy or treatment that could be applied, until the
persevering use of AYER'.S SARSAPARILLA relieved
liim. Few cases can be found more inveterate and
distressing than this, and it took several dozen
bottles to cure him
Leucorrhooa, Whites, Female Weakness,
are generally produced by internal Scrofulous I'l
ceration, and are very often cured by the alterative
effect of tliis SARSAPARILLA. Some eases require,
however, in aid of the SARSAPARILLA, the skilful
application of local remedies.
From the well-known nnd widely-celeb rated Dr.
Jacob Morrill, of Cincinnati.
" I have found your SARSAPARILLA an excellent
alterative in diseases of females. Many eases of
Irregularity, Leucorrhoea, Internal Ulceration, and
local debility, arising from the scrofulous diathesis,
have yielded to it, and there are few that do not,
when its effect is proi>erly aided by local treatment."
A lady, unwilling to allow the publication of her
name, writes .-
My daughter and myself have been cured of a
very debilitating l.eucorrhtea of long standing, by
two bottles of your SARSAPARILLA."
Rheumatism, Gout, Liver Complaint, Dys
pepsia, Hgfirt Disease, Neuralgia,
when eanseii bv Scrofula in the system, are rapidly
cured by this fixr. SARSAPARILLA.

Mr. Joseph Swyers—After my best respects
to you, this is to let you know that I have
been troubled with chills for the last fifteen
years, some of them so hard that I thought 1
could not live over night. I was for days
and nights not able to go out. Last fall they
came on again as usual, and having about
half a bottle of your liniment about the
house, I thought I would try it, and took
about 20 drops night and morning for some
time. From the time 1 took it I have never
had one chill, and can say that I never had
used any medicine that gave so much satis
faction as your liniment. Your ob't servant,
Adam Baird.
March 28th, 1864.
Mr. J. Swyers : My son had a sore neck
for three moDtbs hack, for which I used your
liniment, and it is a perfect cure. He also
had a sore leg for two years back ; I got one
of your bottles of liniment, which has cured
it soundly.
Yours, respectfully, Charles Mitchell.
Freedom Forge, March 28, 1864.
Mr. Swyers : I recommend your liniment
to be the best that I ever had in my house.
I had a pain in my side for about 15 years,
and I doctored with doctors far and near,
but they done me no good, when I heard of
your liniment, tried it, and I am thankful to
say it has cured me sound and well; and
for the children I could not do without it.
Hugh's hand were dreadfully cracked open
with the wind, and he rubbed them with
it, and it has cured them.
