S Gr AZET TE . LOCAL. AFFAIRS. THANKSGIVING.— Tomorrow, 24 th. has been appointed by both the President and Governor as a day of general Thanksgiving to God for the blessings of the past year—for the gathered fruits of the earth; for the continuance of health; for the prosperity of indus trv; for the preservation of good order and tranquility throughout our borders; for the victories which he lias vouch safed to us over armed traitors, and for the manifold mercies he has heaped j upon us, unworthy recipients. Stores and business places in town will be closed. A union service will be held in the Lutheran church in the morning at 20 minutes before 11, consequently none of the other churches will be open. The choirs of the several con gregations have combined and practi ced suitable music for the occasion. A collection will be taken up, to be pre sented as a thank-offering to the Chris tian Commission. All are invited to attend. TEMPERANCE LECTURE.— Rev. J. S. McMurray will deliver a lecture on temperance in the Town Hall on Tues day evening next, under the auspices of the Independent Order of Good Templars, an institution which is in a flourishing condition, has effected some good, and promises to become a useful auxiliary to the great moral cause which ever goes hand in hand with.re ligion. MILITARY. —Captain Lloyd, Provost Marshal, requests us to say that from this date the 13th section of the en rollment act will be rigidly enforced. Any person drafted and wishing to put in a substitute must do so or before the day fixed for his appearance. The privilege of putting in a substitute ex pires with that day, and if on hearing his claim for exemption he is held to be liable, he cannot escape personal service. BgL David Withrow, Esq., of Wayne township, who had been appointed a Commissioner to distribute election papers to the soldiers, returned from Atlanta last week. LOOK OUT. —While the public mind is kept on the qui vive as to what Grant, Sherman and Sheridan are do ing, the next subject of most interest is what NICHOLS will bring from Phil adelphia, where he now is, in the way of Fruit, Nuts, Candies, Fancy Articles, Toys, &c His stock no doubt will be a superb one, and cause a rush when i opened. Location, next door to the post office. j- RECESS AT PUBLIC SCHOOLS.—Yester ♦ day some eight or ten school girls and boyß were " amusing" themselves du ring recess in torturing a poor cow, red and white spotted, which happen ed to be on the street. If "as the twig is bent the tree's inclined," what an ig noble band of cold, selfish, unfeeling and brutal miscreants will owe their moral education to public school recess. Cannot the directors take measures either to abolish this nuisance or at least confine it to the schoolyards in stead ot the public streets, for as it is, it is a disgrace to the system, to the directors, and to the teachers ? County Superintendents of this State are to assemble in Con vention at Pittsburgh, on the 29th of this month, at 10 o'clock a. m. Teach ers and other friends ot education will find it interesting to attend. George, a little boy of Mr. Fink, at Freedom Iron Works, had his foot severely scalded the other day by ac cidently setting it in a pot of boiling coffee. VQL The weather was wet and un pleasant until yesterday morning when it took a wintry turn. —The New York Journal of Com merce has got sick of copperheadisru, and is turning neutral. —Oil has been struck in Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Of course there is a great excitement in that region. —The Bishop of Scotland was late ly shipwrecked off the coast of Scot land, landed on a rock anj.l passed the night under a tarpaulin. —Beforo the election Judge Wood ward wrote to his political friends in New York that "Pennsylvania will go for McClellan as sure as the sun will rise to morrow, by about 25,000 major ity." We have not observed that the sun has failed to rise as usual, nor that the couutry is half as much ruined as it was when Buchanan allied himself to southern traitors. Ladies' Furs. Analysis of the Massachusetts State Assayer, January '25, 1858. Wh>n evaporated through clean linen it left no oil or offensive matter. In every res pect it is a pcre spirituous liquor. The oil which gives to this Brandy its flavor and aro ma, is wholly unlike fusil, or grain oil. Its odor partakes of both the fruit and oil of | grapes With acids, it produces ethers of a high fragrance. The substitution of this Brandy for Cognac Brandy will do away with the manufacture of f coitions spirits, sold un der this name both at home and abroad. Respectfully, A. A.
