THE i Eat Bread. One of our contemporaries publishes an important article <>n the subject of eating bread, which is deserving the | attention of all who are compelled to i economize in their household expenses. ; When beef is worth twenty-five to thirty cents per pound, potatoes two dollars a bushel, and other articles of j food in proportion, it becomes impor-1 tant to know what possesses the most nutriment, and is at the same time the ! most economical. Without doubt that j article is Bread, as the experience of | all abundantly proves. It is the first j andalmost thoonly food known tochild ish appetites, and of which children of a larger growth seldom tire. A stronger argument in favor of bread could be j given, than natural, unsatisfied log- j ic for it—which as the horse craves oats, shows it to he nature's main sup port. As to its nourishing properties, it is asserted that it contains three times as much nourishment as roast beef. Five hundred pounds of flour j gives to the body thirty pounds of sub- j stance that makes bones, while thesame quantity of bran gives one hundred and twenty pounds. This bony substance is one of the indispensable elements ot ■ the human body, and is thought to be imparted by I J read in a greater degree than by any other food. As to its economy, flour is hardly ever as expen sive, relative, as meat. Even at the present time, the price of one pound of meat, would buy three pounds of flour or bread, and those three pounds of bread furnish as much nourishmentl to the eater as nine pound of good ! roast beef. In dollars and cents, three ; pounds of bread are worth about twen- J ty-fivc cents, and nine pounds of beef j are worth two dollars and twenty- J rive cents —leaving a balance of two j dollars in favor of bread. Healthful Effect of the Tomato. The tomato is one of the most healthful, as well as one of the most universally liked of all the vegetables. ; Its healthful qualities do not depend i on the mode of preparation for the ta- j hie; it may be eaten thrice in a day, cold or hot, cooked or raw, alone, or altogether, to a like advantage, and in i the utmost that can be taken with an < appetite. Its healthful quality arises from its slight acidity, in this making j it as valuable, perhaps, as berries, cher- I ries. currants, and similar articles. It i is also highly nutritious. The tomato season ends* with the frost. If the vines are pulled up before the frost j comes, and hung up ira well ventila- j ted cellar, with the tomatos hanging ! to them, the -love apple' will continue • ripening until Christmas. The cellar \ should not be too dry nor too warm. 1 The knowledge of this may he im- j proved to great practical advantage i for the benefit of many who are inva- ! lids and are fond of the tomato. m ~ mm ■■■ ■ 1.. ..I, i i j W3LLIAM LSND, has now open A NEW STOCK OF Cloths, Cassimeres i AND VESTiNCS, which will be made up to order in the neat est and most fashionable styles. apl9 NEW Tailoring Establishment, <MLiiISs&lsS Wo (£IEOS M Respectfully announces ! to his friends and the pub lie generally that he has ta ken the stand lately occu pied by Mr. Cogley, bp. tvrnen Rudisill's and Sel heimer's stores, where he j has opened a select assort nient of Cloths, Casitneres, and \ estings, which he will make up to order in the | best and most fashionable style, and on reas- j enable terms. It f either produces or is produced by an en feebled. vitiated state . the blood, wherein | that fluid becomes in- Jnji^®it coni P t>tcnt to PU>tain g t rf the vital forces in their ' g action, and i the system to j fall into disorder and j decay. The scrofulous contamination is va ; riously caused by mercurial disease, low ! living, disordered digestion from unhealthy | food, impure air, filth and filthy habits, j the depressing vices, and, above all, by the venereal infection. Whatever be its ; origin, it is hereditary in the constitution, descending "from parents to children unto I the third and fourth generation:" indeed, it I seems to be the rod of Him who says, *• I will | visit the iniquities of the fathers upon their children." The diseases it originates take various names, according to the organs it | attacks. In the lungs, Scrofula produces j tubercles, and finally Consumption; in the | glands, swellings which suppurate and be | come ulcerous sores; in the stomach and bowels, derangements which produce indi ! gestion, dyspepsia, and liver complaints : on ! the skin, eruptive and cutaneous affections, j These, all having the same origin, require the i same remedy, viz.. purification and invigora tion of the blood. Purify the blood, and these dangerous distempers leave you. With ! feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you cannot have health; with that '-life of the fiesh" healthy, j-ou cannot have scrofulous disease. Ayer's Sarsaparilla is compounded from the most effectual anti dotes that medical science has discovered for this afflicting distemper, and for the cure of the disorders it entails. That it is far supe rior to any other remedy yet devised, is known by all who have given it a trial. That | it does combine virtues truly extraordinary in their effect upon this class of complaints, is indisputably proven by the great multitude j of publicly known and remarkable cures it has made of the following diseases: King's Evil, or Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Erysipelas, Rose or St. Anthony's Fire, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Coughs from tuberculous deposits in the lungs, White Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and Syphilitic Infections. Mercurial Diseases, Female Weaknesses, and. indeed, the whole series of complaints tnat arise from impurity of the blood. Minute reports of individual cases may be found in AYEK'S AMERICAN ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists for gratuitous distribution, wherein may be learned the directions for its use. and some of the remarkable cures which it has made when all other remedies had failed to afford relief. Those cases are purposely taken from all sections of the country, in order that every reader may have access to some one who can speak to him of its benefits from personal experience. Scrofula depresses the vital energies, and thus leaves its victims far more subject to disease and its fatal results than are healthy constitutions. Hence it tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten, the average duration of human life. The vast importance of these considerations has led us to spend years in perfecting a remedy which is adequate to its cure. Tliis we now offer to the public under the name of AYLR'B SARSAPARILLA. although it is composed of ingredients, some of which exceed the best of Sarsaparilla in alterative power. By its aid you may protect yourself from the suffer ing and danger of these disorders. Purge out the foul corruptions that rot and fester in the blood, purge out the causes of disease, and vigorous health will follow. By its pecu liar virtues this remedy stimulates the vital functions, and thus expels the distempers which lurk within the system or burst out on any part of it. We know the public have been deceived by many compounds of Sarsaparilla, that promised much and did nothing; but they will neither be deceived nor disappointed in this. Its virtues have been proven by abun dant trial, and there remains no question of its surpassing excellence for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is intended to reach. Although under the same name, it is a very different medicine from any other which has been before the people, and is far more ef fectual than any other which has ever been available to them. AYER'S CHERRY PECTORAL. The World's Great Remedy for Coughs, Colds, Incipient Con sumption, and for the relief of Consumptive patients in advanced stages of the disease. This has been so long used and so uni versally known, that we need do no more than assure the public that its quality is kept up to the best it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to do all it has ever done.
