T 3 GAZETTE. LOCAL AFFAIRS Sabbath School Library For Sale, Containing over six hundred vol umes. The Presbyterian Sabbath School e< mmittee have been authorized to dispose of the above books at a very reduced price, because their contents have become old to the school, yet the books themselves are in good condi tion. The library was selected with great care, and consists of some of the choicest books from three Boards of Publication. We propose to give to purchasers an opportunity of selecting such books as they may want from the cases, which is much preferable to a catalogue selection. Those wishing to see the library will please call on J. IRVIN WALLIS, or R. W. PATTON, syl3—2t Committee. GRAND CONCERT BY THE BLIND.— Prof. J. E. T. Reybold, a dis tinguished violinist of Philadelphia, also a graduate of the above named institution. In connection with the concert, Mr. T. E. Wolverton will Lil ly explain the mode of instructing tl e blind as followed by the Pennsylvania Institution at Philadelphia. A choice progiamine will he presented on each evening, and will be announced at the concert. Admission—adults, 25 cents, children under 15 years, 15 cents. Doors open at 7 o'clock, performance to commence quarter before 8. FROM THE 46TH.—The following is n list of casualties in Company A : Killed Privates Samuel Bowersox, George Bollinger, George C. Peoples. Wounded—Privates Conrad Holstein, thigh, severely; Conrad Gardlock, hand; Henry Craig, foot; Jackson Chister. chin; Samuel Kauffman, hand, James Goulii, leg, slightly. Missing in action—Privates Charles Brought and Philip Dunn. ACCIDENTS —Two accidents recently occurred at the second railroad bridge above town. J. Robinson, watchman at the bridge, seated himself on a loose tie on Monday a week, and while waiting to signal a train the tie tilted, and he fell with much force, injuring himself so much that he died on Monday morn ing last. An Englishman, whose name we do not know, while at work at the above bridge yesterday morning, had bis leg broken by a large stone falling upon him from a barrow or truck, and fell backwards with his head upon a rail, cutting a severe gash. This is the fourth or fifth accident that has taken place at this bridge within a few months. NARROW ESCAPE. —On Monday even ing last, a horse in front of the resi dence of Mrs. Fichthorn in Market street became rt stive just as Robert Carson was assisting Kate, a daughter of Mrs. F., to alight irom the buggy attached, lie caught the wheel to prevent the buggy Irom being moved violently, and the horse becoming affrighted dashed away with Kate, the vehicle running over him. Kate seiz ed one rein, which turned the horse on the diamond into the corner at the post office, where he was cheeked by running his nose against the window of Hoffman's store. He was caught immediately, the "hero of the perilous journey lifted from her seat, when— she fainted, —hut recovering in a short time, walked home unharmed and evi dently gratified at the Jinufc of the fear ful little drama, viz., neither her.-elf, the horse, or buggy receiving ary in jury. Ii EMS. Bishop Stevens preached in the Episcopal church in this place on Monday evening last to a large and attentive audience from the text For there was not a house where there was not one dead"—Ex. 11.30. As was expected, he delivered a piously j interesting address. The workmen | at the furnace are rapidly bringing the improvements on that building to completion. The stack 94 feet high 1s I finished, and operations will be corn- ; nienced about the first of next month. Two horses were stolen from j Kline's pasture field on Monday night. The weather continues hot and dry. -MILITARY. — Several efforts were made here to get up a company during the past week, but apathy on the part ot many who could go but will not, and constant employment and high wages, prevented anything from being effected. On Monday evening a meet ing was held at the courthouse, and a committee appointed to see what could be done. Yesterday evening another meeting was held, but did not succeed in devising ways and means to raise what is most wanted, men. One gen tleman offered to give $lO to each re cruit up to fifty, and another 81 for each, but beyond this no provision was made for bounty. T■ ere are a few willing to go for the sake of the coun try, and as our quota of the 24,000 is but 125, it ought to he raised at once, as petting it oft from day to day will neither aid the government, nor save our" cities. Some of the young men of town are deliberating on organizing a company of Cade's, irrespective of bounty men, braggarts or grumblers. Capt. A B. Selheimcr and J 11. L. Eager made some progress yesterday towards forming a company, and if properly seconded will succeed. Dr. Bower and Lieut. Purcell we hear had about 40 men on Monday, raised in the neighborhood of Newton Ham ilton. Our quota is 135 men. and things must have come to a strange pass if patriotism is at so low an ebb that this number cannot be raised for 100 days. U. S. ASSESSMENT. —The Annual As sessment of U. S.
