THIEVING. —Wo had been in a great
measure free from thefts, except on a
small scale for sometime, hut of late
housebreaking has become quite com
mon by sundry candidates for the pen
itentiary. Nathan Kennedy's store
room was entered on Wednesday night
of last week and a quantity of linen,
muslin, some S7O in money, ifee. were
taken. Marks & Willis's Steam Mill,
M Atee's Lewistown Mill, Blymyer's
warehouse, Zerbe's store, and several
other places have also been visited by
the midnight gentry, apparently in
search of money. Suspicion rests up
on several parties, though so far no
clue has been obtained to warrant the
apprehension of any one.
Among the articles known to be ta
ken from Mr. Kennedy's store are the
following :
3 parts of piece? bleached muslin.
3 pieces of good Irish linen.
1 piece of white flannel, 13 or 14 yards.
4 pair of boots.
1 piece Kentucky jeans.
1 piece paper muslin, white.
A bank note believed to be on Jacksonville
hank. Na, which Mr. Kennedy signed as
President in je*t.
Two s'a on Northampton bank (broken).
Some 10's and s's Lewistown bank.
25 cent shinplaster of McVeytown borough

Adams died in the Har
risburg Asylum on the 3d May, aged
57 years. She was well known in
this county as an inmate of the Alms '
House for many years, her mind hav- !
ing been affected with that insanity j
which at times manifested itself in an- i
ger and mischief, and at others in a j
courteous demeanor worthy of a refin j
ed lady. She was well informed, quick
at repartee and sarcasm, and hut for
her unfortunate malady might have
been an ornament in any household. !
Life's fitful fever o'er we trust she 4 !

ACCIDENT —Two accidents and sev- i
era! narrow escapes have occurred at'
the first railroad bridge above town,'
where workmen are engaged in widen
ing the abutments preparatory to lay
ing a second track. Nicholas Lightner I
(not Nightbart as published last week) 1
had ltis leg broken on Saturday a week,
and since then a man from Mifflint'own
was killed by the windlass rope break
ing and a stone falling upon him.

thus made equally available to the smallest lender
and the largest capitalist. They can be converted
into money at any moment, and the holder will have
the benefit of the interest.
It may be useful to state in this connection that the
total Funded Debt of the I'nited States on which in
terest is payable in gold, on the 3d day of March. 1864,
was $708,'.(65,000. The interest on this debt for the

It will be seen tbat even the present g"hi revenues
of the Government arc largely in excess of the wants
of the Treasury for the payment of gold interest,
