TEE OA2ETTB. LOCAL AFFAIRS. CONCERT. —Mr. Kemerer, who has been teaching a large number of pu pils to sing, will give concerts in the Town Hall on Saturday and Monday evenings next. Tickets 15 cents. The Huntingdon papers, where he last taught, speak of his concert as a most pleasant recreation. THE LITTLE FOLKS. —Wo are to be favored with an exhibition next Tues day evening at the Town Hall, which for real merit, attraction and talent, was never equaled, perhaps, by any entertainment that ever visited Lewis town —comprising as it does three of the smallest human beings ever known to history. Com. Foote, Col. Small and the " Fairy of the West." These Lilliputians are so much smaller than the Tom Thumb party as to leave no room for comparison; for instance Com. Fcote is six years older and two in ches shorter than Barnum's Com. Nut, while the " Fairy of the West" is only about half the size of Minnie Warren; added to this is a first class musical en tertainment, consisting of the old Con tinental Vocalists —W. D. Franklin, J. W. Smith, Miss M. C. Ellinger and Prof. G. H. Brooks. All things con sidered this is one of the best exhibi tions traveling. They have played for the last three weeks in Washington, meeting with the most flattering suc cess, —while there they were honored with a private reception at the White House and the President's family visi ted their entertainments several times. They will exhibit but one night, owing to an engagement in Pittsburgh. AN ATTEMPTED SWINDLE OR ROB BERY. —Last week a gang of swindlers induced a Berks county committee on local bounties to come up this way with a considerable sum of money for procuring recruits. Fortunately the committee had sense enough imme diately on their arrival to deposit their money at Russell's banking house, or there would have been a nice hubbub, as there is not a particle of doubt that the thieves intended to rob them. Find ing themselves foiled by this move, they endeavored to peisuade the com mittee to go up towards the mountain with the money, alleging that there re cruits could be had, but as they had asserted the same thing of this place, which proved to be totally false, the committee were advised by Mr. Rus sell to take their money and go back by the lirst train, which they did. Lo cal committees everywhere will do well by keeping aloof from all total strangers, no matter how plausible their address, or friendly their profes sions, as nine out of ten are profession al thieves. ITEMS. —We owe many thanks to Mrs. M. M. Showers c f Milroy, for a basket of superb apples, than which a more acceptable present could not be made, for if there is auj-thing we do like, at this season, it is a good apple. A. J. North, clerk in the Mifflin County Bank, was last week elected Cashier of the new Bank at Selina grove, Snyder county. The rails of the Mifflin and Centre county railroad are laid from the depot to the bridge. John A. Wright, Esq., has been elected one of the Directors of the North Central Ilailroad, a rickety road sadly in want of good management. Sixteen Jobs were printed at the Gazette office last week.—?— Mrs. Tiilie Sigler, wife of John, died rather unex pectedly on Sunday last. B. Haines, who has been quite low for some weeks, is mending and may get well. The Educational Column, since the election of an Editor, has been a blank. If not soon attended to, we shall make an arrangement with teachers on our own hook. • - The steam engine erected at the Lew istown Mills some years ago, has been purchased by the new Furnace Com pany, and is being removed.-—r-Two rebel prisoners who recently escaped from a train above the station at this place, were recaptured in Juniata eo. and lodged in jail. The draft has , been postponed, so that all the dis tricts will have an opportunity to fill their quot:is. Government bounties will be continued to be paid until the Ist of April, when they will positively cease, and the draft no doubt come oft shortly after—so lookout! BSS- Our readers will regret to learn that Capt. A. G. Dickey, of comp. K Bth L. S. colored regiment, was wound-: ed in the face in the battle of Olusta, ; Florida. Among the wounded we also notice Lewis Thomas, of this place, j ESCAPE FROM JAlL. —Jonathan Biek et, alias Harrison Lind, arrested for horse stealing, and L. Buchanan charg ed with larceny, escaped from jail on T uesdaynightoflast week. They got out of their cells somehow and breaking open the back door with hammers, got over the wail with a ladder, the mark of which was distinctly seen where it had fallen down in the snow. There is no doubt whatever that tools had been conveyed into the jail, the time arranged, and outside assistance ren dered. There was no one in the jail at the time except Mrs. I). D. Mutthers bough and Miss Smith, the Lieutenant being away on business. Miss S. we are told thought she heard a noise dur ing the night, but supposing it to be caused by the wind, made no alarm. Lan's escape amounts to a virtual ban ishment from this region, with which most folks seem to be well satisfied. Bicket is an accomplished villain, who it is hoped will be secured, as his dif ferent offences tvould give him at least 10 years in the penitentiary. TOWNSHIP OFFICERS. —The Assessors and Assistants to be elected this spring ought to be carefully selected by the people, as these officers will make the triennial assessment next fall. Thev ought to be men of good judgment, willing to perform their duties without too much hurry, and the principal, if not a good pensman and accountant, ought to secure the assistance of sorao one who can bring in the transcript in good condition. The importance of these things is manifest, and if proper ly attended to will prevent errors in county, school and road taxes. WEATHER. —Wednesday clear in morning, cloudy in afternoon. Thurs day clear and pleasant. Friday a lit tle cloudy but pleasant. Saturday rain all day; evening clear. Sunday cloudy, not cold. Monday clear and pleasant. Tuesday clear in morning, cloudy rest of day, with a slight fall of rain in the evening. —The story got up against General Meade that he had ordered our army to retreat at Gettysburg is no doubt false. We advise our readers to place no confidence in the statements of correspondents of the city papers, nine out of ten of whom ought to be in Fort Lafayette for their lying stor ies sent in letters or in telegraphic despatches. —The attempt to disparage the col ored troops in the recent fight in Flor ida has signally failed. Instead of the three colored regiments flying from the field, they inflicted tremendous losses on the rebels, and without doubt saved Seymour's arm}' from capture. There is reason to believe that he made this ill-starred movement con trary to orders; and what is not a lit tle remarkable, such tory sheets like the Harrisburg Patriot and Union ac tually defend him!
