The Value of Feeding- Materia's- There is much interest in ascertain ing the relative value of different feed ing materials. The last Scottish Far mer has quite an elaborate article on Oil cake, in which the writer states the following as its feeding value, rel atively to beans, peas, barley and oats, and also of beans and peas relatively to oats and barley : 1 ewt. of oil cake is equal to li cwt. of beans or peas. 1 cwt. of oil cake is equal to 1J cwt. of oats or barley. 1 cwt. of beans or peas is equal to 14 cwt. of oats or barley. In other words, three pounds of oil cake are equal to four of her ns or peas, and four pounds of oil cake to seven of oats or barley. He does not take into account whatever difference in quality of manure there might be in fa vor of the cake. Hut one consideration lie presents is equally true here, except in the immediate vicinity of oil mills, viz: 'that in country districts general ly, if we sell grain and buy oil cake, we sell in the cheapest market and buy in the dearest; we pay the highest price for what we buy, and receive the lowest price for what we sell.' A scientific publication gives the following : Many of our readers have doubtless had more or less trouble at some period of their lives in repairing water pipes, where the water could not be shut off conveniently at the fountain head or some intermediate point. In going to my office a few days since, my way led past a place where a man was preparing a lead pipe, which had been cut off accident ally, in making an excavation. There was pressure of more than fifty feet ahead. His plan seemed to me novel and ingenious. The two ends of the pipe were plugged, and then a small pile of broken ice and salt was placed around them; in five minutes the water in the pipe was frozen, the plugs re , moved, a short piece ot pipe inserted and perfectly soldered, and in five minutes more the ice in the pipe was f thawed and the water flowing freely through it. THE :T { Important Requisites in a Wife. A knowledge of domestic duties is beyond all price to a woman. Every ) one of the sex ought to know how to r sew, and knit, and mend, and cook, i< and superintend a household. In ev ,r ery situation of life, high or low, this ' sort ot knowledge is of great advan tage. There is no necessity that the gaining of such information should in terfere with intellectual acquirement or even elegant accomplishment. A well regulated mind can find time to attend to all. \\ hen a girl is nine or ten years old, she should be accustom ed to take some regular share in house hold duties, and to feel responsible for the manner in which her part is per formed—such as her own mending, washing the cups and putting them in place, cleaning silver, or dusting and arranging the parlor. This should not be done occasionally, and neglected whenever she finds it convenient; she should consider it her department. When older than twelve, girls should begin to take turns in superintending the household; making puddings, pies, cakes, Ac. To learn effectually, they should actually do*these things'hem selves, and not stand by and see oth ers do them. JJany a husband has been ruined for want of these domes tic qualities in a wife—and many a husband has been saved from ruin by his wife being able to manage well the household concerns. Gum Arabic Starch. —Take two oun ces of gum arabic powder, put it into a pitcher, and pour on it a pint or more of boiling water (according to the degree of strength desired) and then having covered it, let it set all night. In the morning pour it care luily from the dregs into a clean bot tle, cork it up and keep it for use. A tablespoonful of gum water stirred in to a pint of starch, that has been made in the usual manner, will give alwavs ( white, black or printed) a look of newness, when nothing else can re store them after washing. It is also good, much diluted, for thin white mus lin and bobinet.— Scientific American Brotcn Charlotte Pudding. —Butter a pudding mould thickly, and sprinkle brown s>ugar over the butter; cut some thin slices of bread and butter, (the butter not to be used sparingly) and after having cut oft' the crusts^line tho mould with the slices. Choose some good baking apples, pare them, and slice thera as lor a dumpling, place them in the mould in layers, and be tween the layers sprinkle a few slices ol candied citron, and the grated rind of a lemon. Add sugar sufficient to sweeten the whole; and when the mould is full cover the apples with a slice ot bread, which has been previ ously soaked in butter melted or oiled before the fire. Put the pudding into a moderately-heated oven, and bake it for three hours. When turned out of the mould, the outside should be brown and crisp. ALBUMS, OF all kinds and styles from 75 cents to $lO. Diptheria, Sore Throat, Quinsy, Sprains, Neuralgia, Pain in the Back and Limbs, Cramps, &e. Mil Swyers, by repeated experiments, has succeeded in compounding a Lini ment which possesses all the magic powers of a perfect Pain Exterminator. Its virtues have been unmistakably tested, and every application has given almost immediate re lief; and the object in giving notice of the above discovery is, not to enlarge the list of worthless compounds already quite too large, but simply to inform any who may be afflict ed with any of the above named diseases where they can be supplied with an infallible remedy. A long list of names of individuals who have had access to the ablest physicians, and have tested most of the patent remedies, all to no advantage, but who were almost im mediately relieved by this powerful Liniment, could be obtained.
