A&BIMKUBAL Use.of Toads in Agriculture. Our ugly friend affects gardens as much as the lord of creation. Aou will find him in a hole in the wall, in the strawberry patch, under the squash vines, or among the cucumbers. lie is not handsome, but serene and dignified as a judge. He ex ecutes judgement upon all bugs, worms, 6nails, and pests of the garden, in the most summary way. See what a capa cious ma# he has, occupying the whole space from his fore legs to his haunches. Ho is the very incarnation of storn tch, and his gastronomic feats would do credit to an Alderman. He tucks away the hugs and all kindred flesh as an epicure would tur tle and pudding. He is never full. That maw stretches like caoutchouc, and he is nearer having an endless gullet than any reptile. lie is altogether too useful to be without enemies. All the serpent tribe hate him and devour him when they can. Even man slanders him. He misses a few strawberries from his patch, and lays it to the toad who stands like a sentinel guard ing his treasures. It was the snail who did the mischief before the toad took up his station; fortunately he is now where he will spoil no more rudy fruit. Or it was the robin who slyly snapped up the berry and flew off into the neighboring trees, leaving the poor toad to bear his sins.— Hut you see by the look of his hoDest face, that he is guiltless. Those lustrous eyes arc above stealing. One fat bug would give him more pleasure than all the fruit in your garden. Cultivate the friendship of toads; for they take the insects that the birds are apt to overlook. They inspect the ground closely, peer under the leaves of strawber ries, under the growing vines, and nab ev ery creeping thing in sight. The)' are as easily domesticated as birds, never sing when you do not want them to, are quiet and unobtrusive, and it not worth five hun dred dollars a piece, are still profitable pets and fellow-helpers. Birch the boy that teases toads. Disinfecting Agents. Now that the warm weather is upon us our citizens should thoroughly cleanse their premises, rendering them as pure and healthy as posible. We are convinced that a great portion of the disease so prevalent during the hot months in summer, is at tributable to the accumulation of filth in alleys and yards. There are a number of disinfecting agents which will be found ef ficacious in removing offensive smells from damp, mouldy cellars, yards, pools of stag nant water, decaying vegetable matter, <ic. Either of the following will answer the purpose, while they cost but a trifle : 1. One pint of the liquor of chloride of zinc, in one pailful of water, and one pound of chloride of lime in another pailful of water. 'lliis is perhaps the most effective o' anything that can be used, and when thrown upon decayed vegetable matter of any description, will effectually destroy all offensive odors. 2. Three or four pounds of sulphate of iron (copperas) dissolved in a pailful of water will in many cases be sufficient to remove all offensive odors. 8. Chloride of lime is better to scatter about damp places, in yards, in damp cel lars, and upon heaps of filth.— Scientific American. INVALIDS, READ AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELVES. JULES HAUEL, Esq., the well known perfumer, of Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, whose choice products are found at almost every toilet, says: "I am happy to sav of your CATHARTIC PILLJ, that I have found them a lietter family medicine, for common use, than tutv other within my knowledge. Many of my friends lve'realized marked benefits from tliem, and co incide with me in believing that they possess extraordinary virtues for driving out disease* and curing the sick, i hey arc not only effectual, but safe and pleasant to be taken qualities which must make them valued by the public, when they are known." The venerable Chancellor YVAKDLAW writes from Bal timore, 15th April, 1854 : . " Da. J. C. Am - Bir: I have taken your Pills with great benefit, for the listlessncss, languor, loss of appetite, ai d Bilious headache, which has of late years overtaken me in the spring. A few doses of your Pills cured me. I have used your Cherry Pectoral many years in my family lor coughs 'and colds "with unfailing success. You make medicines which cure; and I feel it a pleasure to commend you for the good you have done and are doing." JOHN F. BEATTY, Esq., Sec. of the Penn. Railroad Co., snvs: " Pa. R. R- Office, Philadelphia, Dec. 13, 1853. "Sir: 1 take pleasure in adding my testimony to the efficacy of your medicines, having derived very material lienefit from the use of both your Pectoral and Cathartic Pills. 1 am never without them in my family, nor shall 1 ever consent to be, while my means will procure them." The widely renowned S. S. STEVENS, M. P., of \\ ent worth, N. tl., writes: "Having used your CATHARTIC PILLS in my practice, I certify from e.V|ierience that they are an invaluable purga tive. In cases of disordered functions of the liver, causing headache, indigestion, costiveness, and the great variety of diseases that follow, they are a surer remedy than any other. In all cases where a purgative remedy is required, I confidently recommend these Pills to the public, as superior to any other I have ever found. They are sure in their operation, and perfectly safe qualities which make them ati invaluable article for public use. 1 have for many years known your Cherry Pectoral as the best Cough medicine in the world ; and these Pills are in no wise inferior to that admirable preparation for the treat ment of diseases." " Jlcto h, JVe., Ave. 25, 1853. " DR. J. C. AVER Dear Sir: 1 have been afflicted from my birth with scrofula in its worst form, and now. after twenty years' trial, and an untold of amount of suffering, have been completely cured in a few weeks by your fills. With what feelings of rejoicing I write can only be imagined when you realize what 1 have suffered, and how long. " Never until now have I been free from this loathsome disease in some shape. At times it attacked my eyes, and made me almost blind, besides the unendurable pain ; at others it settled in the scalp of my bead, and destroyed my hair, and lias kept me partly bald all my days ; sometimes it came out in my face, and kept it fir months a raw sore. "About nine weeks ago I commenced taking your Ca thartic Pills-, and now am entirely free from the complaint. My eyes are well, my skin is fair, and my hair has com menced a healthy grow tir; all of which makes me feel already a new person. " Hoping this statement may lie the means of conveying information that shall do good to others, I am, with every sentiment of gratitude, Yours, Arc., .MARIA RICKER." "I have known the above named Maria Ricker from her childhood, and Iter statement is strictly true. ANDREW J. IMESERVE, Overseer of the Portsmouth Manufacturing Co." CAPT. JOEL PRATT, of the ship Marion, writes from Boston, 20f!i April, 1854: " Your Pills have cured me from a bilious attack which arose from derangement of the Liver, which had become very serious. I had failed of any relief by my Physician, and front every remedy I could try ; but a few doses of your Pills have completely testored me to health. I have giieii them to my children for worms, with the best ef fects. They were promptly cured. 1 recommended tliein to a friend for costiveness, which had troubled him for months ; lie told me in a few days they had cured iiiui. You make the best medicine ill the world ; and 1 am free to say so." Read this from the distinguished Solicitor of tire Supreme Court, whose brilliant abilities have made him well known, not only in this but the neighboring States. " JWTB Orleans, sth Jipril, 1854. " Sir: I have great satisfaction in assuring you that myself and family have been very much benefited by your medicines. .My wife was cured, two years since, of a se vere and dangerous cough, by your CHERRY PECTORAL, and since then has enjoyed perfect health. My children have several times been cured from nttarks of the Infiu enza and Croup by it. It is an invaluable remedy fur these complaints. Your CATHARTIC PILLS have entirely cured me from a dyspepsia and costiveness, which has grown upon me for some years,— indeed, this cure is much more important, from the fact I had failed to get relief from the best Physicians which this section of the country affords, and from any of the numerous reme dies 1 had taken, " Yon seem to us, Doctor, like a providential blessing to our family, and you may well suppose we are not un mindful of it. Yours respectfully, LEAVITT THAXTER." " Senate Chamber, Ohio, Jipril sth, 1854. " DK. J. C. AVER Honored Sir: 1 have made a thor ough trial of the CATHARTIC I'ILLS, left me by your agent, and have been cured by them of the dreadful Rheumatism under which be found me suffering. The first dose re lieved me, and a few subsequent doses have entirely removed the disease. I feel in better health now than for some years before, which I attribute entirely to the effects of your CATHARTIC PILLI. Yours with great respect, LUCIUS B. METCALF."
