THE Everlasting Flowers. All lovers of flowers fel regret when the buds and blossoms hare passed away.— Hence oar efforts to keep them with us du ring the whole year, by means of conserva tories and pot plants In the early winter we miss the boquet from our table, and long for its gay and delicate colors and its delightful fragrance. We have a class of flowers that though destitute of fragrance, retain all the beauty of form and color for years, and therefore are exceedingly use ful in the formation of W inter Roquets and Floral Ornaments. 11 e will describe a few of the best. The Gnaphaliums are most common in Europe, but'tbe better varieties are peren nial, 'and not hardy in this climate V. e have several species growing wild on poor toils, but tbey are of little value. The Hdichrytum is. perhaps, the most interesting and showy family of the ever hating flowers. There are several varieties, ail annuals, differing in color and sixe of flower, some being very double They are white'or cream color, bright yellow, a red dish bronze, and dark, brownish red. For preserving, the flowers should be picked as soon as they open, and they will keep their natural appear ince for years For the sake of varietv, it is best to pick a few buds as ■ well as flowers in different 9tages of niatur- i ity. The G'.ohe Am ir-'nth, ( Gomphrena glo bo*o.) is one of the best known of this class of flowers. There are several varieties, dif fering in color as the red. flesh colored, : yellow, etc Ro'lan(hi Mmgltsh is the name of an- i other beautiful annual Everlasting It is a native of Australia, and was introduced into England some years ago by Capt. Manglef, from Swan River. It is rather tender in its habit, and will require more attention in the earlier stag#* of growth than some of the othera It is a beantifui rose color, and has a fine effect in beds or masses in bright weather. Acrtclinium. is another fine immortelle, resembling the last somewhat in form of flower, but the blossoms are larger, and it is hardier There are two varieties, o/Jium and roseum, both desirable. The X'ranthcmvLm < are another interes- j ting family ot Everlasting fiowers, white and purple in color. With the above, and a few of the orna mental grasses, boqueta can be formed of great beauty, that wiil endure ior years. To drivt au:a-j Rats. —Some six or eight years since, ray wife, in order, as she said, i to sweeten the cellar, sprinkled a solution 1 of copperas over the bottom; siuee which I have never observed any signs of rats in ! the cellar. Her custom is to use the solu tion two or three time? during the summer, sprinkled on the cellar floor, and I aui ful ly convinced that rats do not like it —D. Gates. Grafting the Tomato on the Potato.—A correspondent of the Horticulturist state* that he succeeded, perfectly, in grafting a seion of the tomato upon the potato vine. He cut about one third of the potato shoot off, just above a leaf, taking care not to in jure the bud at its base. The scion, beiug shielded from the sun. was every day sprinkled with a little water, and it took readily. In the fall the tomato was loaded with ri fie and unrip* fruit, and had grown to a large size The potato and tomato are closely allied, botanicaily. Composition to Stop Leakage. —A cor respondent of the Lynn ) News, give- * recipe for a cheap composition, with which leaks in roofs may be effectually stopped. Having a leaky I L, be says, ' I made a composition of four pounds of resin. <ne pint of linseed oil, and one ounce of red lead ; applied it hot with a brush to the part where the ' L' was joined to the main house. It has never leaked since.— 5 then recommended the composition to ray neighbor, who had a dormer window which leaked badly. He applied it, and the leak stoppei I made my water cask tight by this composition, and haverecoin mended it for chimneys, windows, etc . and t has always proved a cure lor a leak.
