FATAL ACCIDENT.—A young man named Levi Hoover, who will be remem bered as in the employ of Samuel Eisen bise for some years, met with a fatal acci dent on the Northern Central Railroad, late on Saturday last, while get on the cars near Cockeysville, Md. In at tempting to do so, he fell and was caught under the wheels, and both of his legs cut off and his hand crushed. He died a few moments after the accident occurred. His remains were taken to Baltimore, and Dr. Greentrce summoned to hold an inquest. RUNAWAY. —A horse ran away on Mon day morning last, somewhere in Valley street, and came down Market at full speed, having upset and somewhat broken a car riage in which Mr. John Kyle was convey ing two nieces to town on their way to school. The party, although thrown out, fortuuately escaped with a few slight bruis es and scratches. LF.n BAIT.—A young fellow named Killmore, recently convicted at Bellefonte and sentenced to the 110. of llefuge, was brought here last week by the sheriff ol Centre county, and locked up in a room in the National House, when the sheriff went down to take a sociable chat with the land lord until car time. In the meantime the prisoner, not liking his quarters, took out the transom above the door, got out, walk ed down stairs, and in the darkness of the night left for parts unknown. RANDOM FACTS. —Snow balling ought to be put down, either by the officers or else by the citizens. Those public nuisan ces, the public school scholars, have be come so outrageous in this respect during thaws, that no one is any longer safe in this neighborhood standing at,a window. There is a fine of SI.OO and costs for throw ing snow balls or anything else on the streets. If they must engage in uch ■"amusement," let them go where there are no windows to break, and few will com plain if they kuock out a few eves or a few teeth. Senator Crawford has reported a hill to re audit the account of Gen. Jno. Boss. The indications of colder weath er have revived the hopes of ice dealers iri .King Frost. Lloyd Tilghman, who will be remembered as a short crusted engineer •on the Pennsylvania Rail Road, was the rebel commander taken prisoner at Fort Henry, Tennessee, lie was recognized by Daniel Printz, a son of Peter, who had just returned from that quarter on a visit to his home. He says the gold specs still figure on Tilghman's nose, conspic uous as ever. Capt. E. W. Eisenbise left for Ilarrisburg yesterday with seven teen recruits for the war, among them Frid. Cogley, A. Files, D. and 11. Bearley, John Jones, Wui Matters. Morgan Comfort, Ac- Lieut. W. 11. Weber, of the Logans, made a pop visit home this week. -G. W. Liberty has been prompted to Sergeant Major of the 46th. Another light fall of snow has made good sleighing. The tcnipeiance meetings in the Town Hall on Fridav evenings are well attended. Soult, Mercantile Appraiser 2 28 In his report on the free banking system, we find the annexed remarks relative to the Mifflin County Bank : Before closing this report it may not be improper to state, as the fact will not other wise officially appear, that the Mifflin County Bank, incorporated by virtue of the provisions Qf the special act for that purpoae, pawed March 26, 1860, ha* been duly organized. and went into operation in Septem.er last Mort- D J®** wte to the wmount of one hundred thousanddollars. duly examined, an. praised, recorded and certified, have been fil ed, deposited and recorded in this office, and circulating notes to the same amount, of the flrd' and ten dollars, have been issued to the bank, registered and ccan tersigned by me, as the law directed. The propriety of conceding to this bank tbe privilege, if desired by ft, of issuing notes of smaller denominations than five dollars, seems to rest on the same grounds which sustain the policy of granting that privilege to other bank institutions. From the peculiar organi zation of this bank, it would be necessary for it to retire and return to this office for cancel lation an amount of its notes now in circula tion equal to the amount of small notes which it may be permitted to issue, or the amount of its capital must be increased, and an addi tional amount of mortgages executed to pro tect the circulation. FROM THE LOGANS.— Capt. H. A. Ei senbise, writing to a gentleman of this place, under date of Hancock, Md., Jan. 22, 1862, on behalf of the Logana, aays: "Thanks to the ladies of the Volunteer Aid Association of Lewistown. for the kind interest m mifested by them in sending each member of the company a pair of cloth mit tens, and I assure you the boys received them with every possible feeling and expression of kindness and gratitude. They came just at the right time to be of service, as we were under marching orders when we received them, and the following day, the snow falling thick and about six inches on the ground, we took up the line of march for Wiltiamsport, where we arrived after two days of the hardest marching we ever experi enced. We were there but a short time, and indeed had not got completed the necessary arrangements for our comfort, when we were again ordered to join our brigade at this place, which was another two days' march. Were ntained. two days [in town] when we were or dered out to camp, where, however, we could not stay on account of the weather, and were ordered t<v town, where we are at present in very good quarters, though under orders to be ready for marching at a moment's notice. In short we have been most constantly on the move since we received the mittens, which must plead my excuse with the ladies for the seeming negligence on my part."
