TEMPERANCE MEETINGS.—A new tem perance association has lately sprung up, which holds its meetings every Friday frening in the Town Hall, and is general- It addressed by able speakers. R#v. Mr. Lcitbead will be the next lecturer. The society we beiieve takes the ground of holding liquor sellers of all kinds within the pale of the law, and when the proper time comes will remonstrate against grat ing license to those who violate it by sel ling to persons of intsmperate habits. {©" The Apprentices' Literary Society now meets regularly every Saturday even ing, and ladies and gentlemen will find it an agreeable place for spending an hour or two. Every young luau who desires to im j.ruve hiniselt ought to become an active member, by participating in its debates. There is also an excellent library, embracing many sterling works, to which members have access. THE WEATHER.—Our prognostications cl the weather last week turned out correct, the cveral aUetnps at snowing and hailing having ended in a general rain, which cleared the river of ice, and caused a rise just high enough to tuuke folks along the creek desire it no higher. Considerable driftwood came down, and a number were engaged in catching it to replenish their sinter pile. OB'R MILITARY.—The Loehiel Cavalry, at last advices, were hourly expected to leave Camp Andy Johnson for the seat of war in Kentucky—the Logan Guards were at Hancock, Md , —and Capts. Zollinger's, Xeice's, Bigelow'a, Maclay's, and Taylor's companies remained in their quarters in Virginia beyond the Chain Bridge. Ac tive movements are daily looked for, as all absentees are ordered to join their regi ments. &&The Peak Family gave a second con cert on Wednesday evening last, and not withstanding it was one of tiie most inclem ent evenings of the winter, every seat in the Town Hall was occupied by the audi ence, ::it of whom felt perfectly satisfied to he ''peaked"' out of their quarters —thus cj.'ieluovely proving that there is no hum bug in their exhibitions, which combine ju<t sufficient variety to please all tastes from the sentimental to the lover of fun. FARMERS' HIGH SCHOOL. From a cat alogue of this institution it appears to be in good condition. The additional build ings were put under roof last fall and will be finished in the spring, after which a few years will test its utility. In the second class of students we notice the names of J. I'. Alexander of Kishaeoquilias, Win. 'A Barnes of Lewistown, S. W. McDowell <t Milroy, James MeFarlane of Keedsville, and in the fourth class Win. M. Atkinson of Atkinson's Mills. Special mention is nude of Messrs. Alexander aud Atkinson M among those standing highest in their Casses. Any one desiring more informa tion, can procure & catalogue by address ing Dr. Evan Pugh, Farm School, Centre county I BOBBERY. —Considerable sensation was created by the arrest last week of a young wan fop stealing wheat from the warehouse of George Blymyer, at the canal basin. It appears he was in the habit of taking off a buitrd at the side of the warehouse, getting Wand openingthedoor, takingoutthe wheat ln bags, then closing it, going out by his hole, and then nailing on the boards *Min. In his last attempt he was heard by a neighbor, and as it was moonlight, de moted. Information was given the owners, 4r 'i the following morning he was arretted, having acknowledged to the theft of the wr >ole or aome of the grain found in his 'tore room, about 10 bushels of wheat. He -is had a considerable quantity ground in to flour, about 90 bushels, for only a small portion of which he could give a satisfacto ry account. The same party was arrested * Gw years ago, for robbing the jewelry establishment of Geo. W. Gibson, but was Quitted for want of evidence. We regret t,J la y that, iu addition to highly respecta ble connections, the guilty party has three IG -all children, and but lately buried his *'G. His chances for escaping confine- B '- nt ' a the penitentiary are now certainly Go lo one againat him. **3?" A load of deer, killed in the north *rn Unties, was in town this morning. THE POOR HOUSE.—I he Democrat, un der wrong information probably, last week cast some reflections on the Steward of the Poor House in removing the man (Lam bert Myers) who had been injured on the railroad, by inuendo attributing his death as much to the manner of his removal— which it says was in a bungling manner— as to his injuries. The facts in the case will not warrant such a statement The family with whom he had been lodged re fused to keep him any longer, and the Poor House physician therefore directed his re moval—no hopes being entertained of his recovery, as he had been seriously injured internally. The steward, his son, and Mr. James Broom, after filling the spring wag on with soft straw, and placing buffalo robes, &e. on it, took the most gentle horse on the farm, and proceeded to effect it. I he man wus carefully carried out on a robe, placed in the wagon, and taken to the Poor House in such a manner as could not have endangered his life, as the weather was fine and the roads god. These gentlemen are well known for their humanity, and it is certainly unjust to attribute his death even remotely to them. i he Henderson Ilose Company will hold a meeting at the engine house on Thursday evening, for the purpose of reor ganizing, the late fire having demonstrated that without a leader to direct operations and a company to keep the apparatas in or der, it is of but little use. During the hail, rain and s.'.ow storms last week, the unusual sound of thunder was heard in this and most of the counties along the Alleghany. A proposition to organize the Pennsylvania Legislature harmoniously was nude by most of the Union democrats, b it the straightouts wouldn't hear to it, the consequence of which was the latter were laid on the shelf. E?sv. 1 he resignation of Gen. Cameron is exciting much speculation. His nomina tion aud confirmation as minister to Rus sia would seem to imply that he retained the confidence of the President and a ma J jority of the Senate. For our part, we j should not wonder if the General's numer : ous friends —fur their name is legion— rendered his position extremely irksome, and thus probably cause him to prefer re j tireuient to a high but laborious office. fee" An important item of the late foreign news is the return of Mtssrs. The New York Albion, (the F.nglish organ) '.in its number of this week, rejoices over the ■ release of Mason and Slidcli, as "the terraina ! tion of a dispute that might have brought about irreparable ills." In speaking of af j fairs in England it says : " As to the great Anglo American diffieul ty. we gather from various sources that the news of the release of Messrs. Mason and j Slideil will be bailed with unbounded satis faction by the nation at large. Having so often warned our readers again-t confounding the press with either the Government or the people, we take no pains to anticipate its course. Only this may he said : the Tunes, which preaches a solemn ami misplaced hom ily to the young Prince of Wales ere the re mains of his father are cold, still maintains its bad eminence in stirring up strife between the United States and Great Britain. It* neutrality is all on one side; and to say noth ing of th* flagrant vindioti veness and injus tice of many of its remarks, they are in th worst conceivable taste. A Thousand Chinamen Drowned. —The California journals, in giving an account of the late disastrous floods with which they hive bceu visited, state that the Chinese have been very great sufferers. No lees than forty five Chinamen were carried away in their cabins at Oregon Bar, in Placer county. The Chinese hongs tn San Francisco have since received letters from the interior of the State to the effect that during the late freshet near one thousand Chinamen were washed off from Long Bar and vicinity, on the Yuia. and were drowned. It appears that the poor fellows remained in their cabins on the bar, as they had dor.a during previous floods, until the raging waters rose above them arid rendered their escape impossible. Horrible Murder- A most horrible murder and destruction of property has been committed lately in Cum beriand couuty. The following, taken from the Carlisle Herald, gives the particulars of the affair: The victims of this foul and atrocious deed were John Burger, (an industrious, unoffend inn old German, who lives near the South Mountain, about a mile from what was form erly Ege's Forge,) and William Grist, a col or-d boy about 14 or 15 years of age, who lived with him. The deed was perpetrated some time on Tuesday evening, and the first indication of foul play was the discovery he tween 9 and 10 o'clock by by a neighbor, that the house (a small log one) occupied by this German, was on fire. The alarm was given and several persons arrived, when the old man was disc >vere l lying on his back, at the door ■ d a small cnv, a short distance from the house, in which he kept his provisions, cloth ing and other articles. He was quite dead— having been shot through the head. The ball entered behind, and lodged just above the eye. His ! r •- ns were scattered over bis clothes.— His gun, an old U. S. rifle, was standing close by, having been lately d scharg'd.— Among the ruins of the house, (which was entirely consumed.) was found the burnt and blackened corpse <>f the colored boy, so much disfigured as to render an attempt at investi gation impossible. The only possible inccn five to this murder must have been robbery. The old ruan attended our market regularly, and was supposed to have some money Those acquainted with him say that he has some SI2OO or SISOO deposited in Baltimore About sls was found in the cave, locked up in a trunk. Suspicion attaches to two travelling Germans seen in that vicinity, ear ly in the evening, and a party started in pur suit. Coroner Smith held an inquest on Wednesday morning—verdict in accordance with the facts. The Commissioners offer a reward of SIOO for the arrest and conviction of the murderers.
