JEsyKev. JL \V. Appleton, of Lancas ter, will preach in the lecture room of the Episcopal Church this (Wednesday cven iiig. ACCIDENT. —For some time past a num ber of boys have been frequenting the old armory building, now the property of the school directors, gaining access by climb ing on the roof or getting in at the second story window. On Monday evening, Win. Allison, son of James Allison, deceased, was on the roof, front which lie slipped, and in falling his arm caught on one of the spikes in the fence, tearing the flesh in a shocking manner between the wrist and elbow. The whole weight of his body was upheld for some moments in this manner, fie was immediately removed to his grand father's residence, lion. James Burns, and his wounds dressed by Dr. YanYalzah. KINK SPKAWUKIUUKS. — We received a basket of strawberries from Mrs. Win. B i Hoffman on Monday evening, the sight of which would have made our " strawberry" neighbor weep. They were remarkable for their uniformity in size, probably aver aging 21 or " inches in circumference, and were by far the finest lot we have seen this i season. Our thanks are of course due the . donor. Considerable feeling has been erea- j ted among the Ladies Association as well as others by an apparently well-founded re port that advantage was taken by some persons to forward liquor in cans, Ac., with false labels, in the boxes which were for warded to our soldiers. MAUKF.T KKCI I.ATIONS. — The Ilnrris burg Telegraph of last week says that j John Paulis, a butcher of that place, was lined ?1 and costs "for selling meat before the hour designated by law for opening the market." We think there can be no doubt a- to the power of any borough to regu lite the sale of' meats, Ac., and such pow er we believe lias been repeatedly sanction- j ed by the courts. At the request of the butchers here an ordinance was passed and is now in force prohibiting the peddling of meat at any time except by the quarter, but at the same time containing some wholesome regulat ions respecting the butch- j er- which our citizens ought to know and enforce. Ist. They are prohibited, du rum market hours, from selling meat at any other place than at the market. 2d. Any piece of meat in market is to be con sidered for *<//'•, as they are prohibited ; from hanging it away under pretence that it is sold or engaged, oil. They are pro- ; hibited from forestalling the market by going around previous to market hours and I engaging meat. 4th. If they endeavor to j evade these provisions by keeping a por- j tion of the meat slaughtered at their shops or houses for the purpose of selling it to certain parties after market hours. The intention is to put nil purchasers on an j equality, and if this ordinance is carried out it may do it; if it fails, let all market regulations be repealed. The fine for vio lation is •?."> for each offence. THE LAST CHANCE. —B. K. Firoved, Agt., reminds our readers that his establishment will positively close in a few weeks, and the ladies lose the best opportunity they ever had ! for buying Lawns, Bareges and other dress goods lower than they ever bought them be fore, or ever may again. Remember, he is selling at original cost. In the meantime, those indebted should at once conie and square U P- _ _ ®skBy the steamer Jura, at Farther Point, we have Liverpool dates to theGth inst.
