Afißieg&TgßAt, Pasturing on the Highways. We cannot conceive of a greater mean ness than turning cattle on the highways to pasture. The true spirit of the law in re lation to fencing is, 4 That every owner shou/'f keep his cattle from tresspassing on his neighbor,' and not, as many suppose, 4 that he should fence his grounds to keep his neighbor s cattle from his fields. No farmer can. constitutionally, be required to erect fences, and ii be chooses to soil his cattle in stables or pens, he should not be required to fence his farm at all. In ma ny parts of Europe fences are not used, and in this enlightened age they should not be required in this country. The cost of useless fences is greater per month, than the total expenses of our government per year, and why? simply because the close fisted portion of the community, who have progressed sufficiently to adopt the best methods tor feeding their cattle, pre fei to tax their neighbors for half the cost o! fences, only required by their refusal to adopt the soiling system Such as desire *. continue the open pasturage, should be compelled to make the entire fence th<y require, and not anchor their neighbors to their stupidity. Every animal found on the public pound and its owner should be fined. The excuse sometimes made, that poor men should be permitted to pasture their cattie on the road, is frivolous; it would be equally proper to claim, that when our legislatures are not in session, that poor men should be permitted to use the legislative halls for residence.-? Working Farmer. The Color of Flowers Promoted by Charcoal. A French amateur, in the Paris Ilorti en uiai •y, states: 4 About a year ago i.- < ■ a i c iTm io r a rosebush of magnif tnotv; and fun of buds. I waited for la to bloom, and I expected roses worthy of such a noble plant, and of the praise bestowed upon it by the vender. At length, when it bloomed, all my hopes were blasted. The flowers were of a faded col or, and I discovered that 1 had only a mid dling multijiora , slate-colored enough. I therefore resolved to sacrifice it to some ex periments which I had in view. My at tention had been captivated with the effects of charcoal, as stated in some English pub lications. I then covered the earth (in the pot in which my rosebush was) about hall an inch deep with pulverized charcoal. iSouie days after, I was astonished to see the roses which bloomed of as fine a lively rose color as I could wish. I determined to repeat the experiment; and, therefore, when the rosebush had done flowering, I took off the charcoal and put fresh earth on the pot. You may conceive that I wait ed lor the next spring impatiently to see the result of this experiment. When it bloomed, the roses were, as at first, pale and discolored ; but by applying the char coal as before they soon resumed their rosv red color. I tried the j:owdered charcoal likewise in large quantities on my petunias, and found that both the white and the vio let flowers were equally sensible to its ac tion. It always gave great vigor to the red or violet colors of the flowers, and the white petunias became veined with red or violet tints. The violets (colors) became covered with irregular spots ot a bluish or almost black tint. Many persons who ad mired them thought they were now varie ties from seed. \ ellow flowers are, as I have proved, insensible to the influence of the charcoal. — Cottage Gardener. How to Manage Box Edging. tew people, except professed gardeners, know how this handsome border ornament ought to be planted. It is usually stuck in a few inches deep, and left straggling on the top of the ground, with three or four times as much top and three or four times less bottom thau it ought to have. Box grows nearly as well from the branches as the roots, and wc think makes prettier edg ing. But the trench in which the edging is to be planted should be full spade deep on the border side, being a few inches shal lower on the alley side—the soil should be made fine—and the box inserted to the bot tom of the trench, packed iu tightly with soil, leaving only Irom one and a half to two inches out of ground. There will be no danger of it not growing, or of produ cing full foliage at die ground. Of course no one would thiuk of planting box with out a line. Trimming box edging is rarely perform ed either skillfully or judiciously. Instead of cutting off the top squarely, and below the preceding year's growth, let it be prun ed to an angle, like the letter A, taking care not to cut below the new growth, and you will, through the whole season, have a beautifully green, thrifty edging, which your friends will admire, and of which you will not be a little proud.— Germantown Telegraph. The Depth of Trees. There has recently sprung up some con troversy as to the proper depth that trees should be transplanted, and as is usual in controversies of this kind among practical men, there is not the least hope of their ever coming to a common opinion on the question. And this is natural &ad perhaps as it should bo. Different kinds of trees frequently require different modes of cul ture, beginning with the planting. For inst.tnoe, dwart years should be planted deep, two or three inches below the union of the quinoe with the pear, in all soils where a dwarf pear ought to be. A fir or spruce should be planted shallow, and so, s a rne d 'if ard jeir as well as apple trees ibis exception, should, how ever, be made; iu light, porous soils they may be gauged deeper than in elay moulds. Thus the heavier the soils, the shallower should the trees be planted. Such is our experience.— Germantown leleyraph. THE ONLY PREPARATION WORTHY OF Universal Confidence & Patron age. My age is about 50 years: the color of my hair auburn, and inclined to curl. Some live or six years since it began to turn gray, and the scalp on the crown of my head to lose its sensibility and dandruff to form upon it. Ea'-h of these disabilities increased with time, and about four months since a fourth was added to them by hair falling off the top of my head and threatening to make me bald. Io this unpleasant predicament. I was induced to try W (.Kid's liair Restorative, mainlv to arrest the fal ling off' of my hair, for I had really no expectation that grav hair could ever r>e restored to its original color except from dyes. I was. however, greatly sur prised to find after" the use of two bottles only, that not only was the falling ott arrested, but the color wa r<—tored to the gray hairs, and sensibility to the r-alp. and dandruff ceased to form on my head, very much to tne gratification of my wife, at whose solicitation 1 wa- induced to try it.
