glurfttiUural* KC. Profits of Agriculture. Do they Vary Mock in Different Years 7 Sometimes they do, but generally not ia the long run. When thry do retry,—l. When the farmer devotes nearly all his strength to the growth if one staple, if that fails him he i s a loser, md his profits that, year are cut off. If a irmer raises wheat alone, or fruit alone, it is vident that itr bad seasons, his support is ta en away, or nearly so. 2. The same result allows, in the same circumstances, when hough the crop itself, is not cut off, its price uddenly and greatly lowers by the failtire of he detr. md, or by some other cause. But in general, the profits of farming are ibout equal, one year with another, for a ong term of years, because—l. If any sea ion is unfavorable to any particular crop, .he same season is commonly favorable to some other crop which may supply its place. A cool wet spring is unfavorable to corn, but it is good for grass. 2. If all crops should be very poor, the aggregate though small' would command as high a price as a gener ous crop could. 3. In every case where the profits of farming vary most, namely, instan ces first mentioned above, the profits one year would compensate fur the losses of anoth er, so that they have a very fair average every two or three years. Inference. —1. The good farmer, who culti vates a variety of crops, need feel very little anxiety about ihe seasons ; what he loses on one hand, he gains on the other. 2. It is in general best to have a variety, if one can; it favorsindependence, and equalizes one year with another.— Ohio Fanner. Vegetable lloney. —The Skowhegan Clarion tells us how the people of that favored local ity are furnished with honey by the trees. — A similar phenomenon has been recorded by the Mormons of Utah :—ln ancient times the children of Israel were furnished with bread from Heaven. At the present day, while the price of every description of sweetening is so high that it is almost beyond the reach of common people, a new wonder lias appeared in the shape of honey upon the leaves of the elm tree. The leaves of several elm trees in this village are thickly coated with a sub stance resembling honey both in taste and appearance. It is so thick as to fall in large drops from the ends of the leaves. Hydrophobia among Cattle—Man Bitten.— A few weeks ftgo, we published an account of some cattle and hogs that were bitten by a rabid dog, on the Pricetown road, a few miles from this city. Two cows belonging to Mr. Reifsoyder, two heifers owned by Mr. Daniel Kotbcaberger, and two hogs in the possession of Mr. Henry Noll, were bitten at the time. We now learn that one of the cows became mad on Tuesday, and was killed.— One of the heifers was attacked by the same malady on Wednesday, and was also killed, fhe other cow having shown symptoms of hydrophobia, was placed in the stable and securely chained. She will be killed this morning, should the symptoms result as ap prehended. While the men were engaged in chaining the cow, she bit the finger of a Mr. Wagner, whose hand in a short time became much inflamed, and swelled to a considerable size. These are all the particulars of the affair that we have been able to obtain.— Iteadiny Gazelle.
