FROM EUROPE. „J NEW YORK, Jan. 17.— The following Eespatch of news by the City of Wash ington, has been received from Sandy Hook. Her dates are to the 31st ult. i The city of Canton was bombarded October 24th, by the English ileet under admiral Seymour. A great advance had taken place in the fCnghsh markets in the price oI teas. ? Swiss affairs were unchanged, though there are rumors of a peaceable negotia tion. A new Minister to the United States has iStieen appointed but his name is not yet * The collision with the authorities at |L'anton was owing to the seizure of twelve -Hritish seamen on board a vessel in the Yrter. The British Consul interfered, but vas insulted and treated with violence, and when remonstrating with the Chinese governor General was treated with con tempt. 4 The matter was placed in the hands of /tdiuirai Seymour on the 21st of October, £hd hostilities commenced on the 24th.— The forts of Canton had been taken and •everal of them destroyed. The Governor, still rejecting Admiral Seymour's demand for satisfaction, a tire as again opened on the 27th agatnst the eity walls and Governor's palace. The yvalls were breached and stormed on the 29ih, tlie troops penetrating to the palace Walls, but were withdrawn in the evening. The British loss was only 3 killed and 12 Wounded. At'empts at negotiation continuing fruit -ftss, the city was bombard, d on the 3d *ud 4th of November. On the 6th twenty-three war junks were <lestroved by the British steamer. Fur ther tune was then given, but the Chinese 1 (Continue 1 ! obstinate. The B.que forts at Canton have been Raptured. The foreign factories have been fracaied, property to a large amount has Ibeeu destroyed, and commerce is complete ly paralysed. "F, FROM NICARAGUA. NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 16. —Thesdvic.es ifey the steamer Texas are to the 10th inst. # Gen. Ileniiiugsen, who so gallantly maintained his {motion in the Church at , C ran ad a, was reinforced on the Bth. and : 4>n the nineteenth day of the siege, sue- i fteeded in driving the enemy before him \ with tlie loss of 1400 men. Gen. lieu mingsen's loss was 200. and the lorce :agamsi him was nearly ten to one. He succeeded in removing ai! ihe mili tary stores, artiiieiy and pub ic documents, Mj Rivas, where he joined Gen. Walker. The town was evacuated by the enemy ■tt learning the approach of the forces ■Under Walker. The seizure of the boats on the S.rn Jnau iiad eut off all communication with Walker. There were 300 recruits waiting it Puiila Arenas for an opportunity to join Walker, anil a steamboat was repair ing to take them up the river. This would iftquire five days, though the work was .aurried as much as possible. The recruits had determined to 9tart as loon as the boat could get ready. ... A special despatch states that just as the Texas was about to start a messenger Arrived from Walker, stating that he had -Apprehended something wrong from the /Belay m the arrival of the recruits, and .paving made a rapid movement, lie sue-' Xfct ded in recapturing the fort of San Carlos, pviiich had been taken by the enemy, and ppras corning down the river by forced marches, scattering all before him. IP [The latter portion of this despatch is doubtless furnished by an ardent partisan -of Walker, and judging from previous re- P f >rts from the same quarter its correctness may be questioned. If true. Gen. Wnlk- Jer is not so near being exterminated as •lias been generally supposed.j g A number of returned .\lcar3guans who arrived at New Orleans give contradictory but generally very dismal accounts of the atate of affairs. 1 he capture of the boats on the San Juan was effected by a man named Spen der, formerly mate of one of the Compa ny's boats, and the hands, by 300 .■Costa Ku-ans. Besides all of the River boats. I The forts of Castello and San Carlos were also taken. Both of Walker's large flake steamers were likewise captured, lea ving Walker only a schooner and a few bungoes. Several officers are also passengers on |he Texas. Some say that Walker is a gocte case, while others are more hopeful. t ROM HAVANA GALE IN THE .GULF.
