agricultural, set. WOOL. A writer in the Wool 0 rower, published at Rochester, X. Y., takes the ground, that for the last six years there has been no increase in the production of wool in the world. He says: • For six years I have taken the utmost pains to make myself thoroughly acquainted with iho subject of wool growing over the whole globe. It is but little after all that one can learn, even in that time, so scant every where are agricultural statistics. \et a safe ; result may be proximated from the little that ; ie known. * There hay been no increase in the pro duction of wool during the last six years, j nor will there be for so many years to come. : If we look to Europe, we lind that the im- ; ports of wool into the great nations of Great j Britain, France and Germany, have steadily increased ; and we find that in each, wool growing has reached its utmost limit. The | imports of wool from Australia for the same i time, show but a very moderate increase. ' From South America and the countries bor dering upon the Mediterranean there has been increased imports, but they have been 1 more the exhaustion of old stocks than any j increase of production in those regions. In the United States there has been a very moder ate increase, still nothing to what we had a right to expect from the natural increase of sheep where properly cared for.' He says that the demand for wool must be : constantly on the increase, and the supply every vear getting smaller, until it shall j roach such a point, that the price will induce j farmers generally to go into sheep growing, j which he is satisfied is the most profitable I branch of farming that can be gone into in almost every quarter of our great country. Sow ing Grass Seed. In reply to inquiries made, the Genesee I Fanner makes the following remarks on the j subject of sowing Timothy. They are the j result of much experience, and strike us as j being correct and to the point: For permanent meadow, and on dry land, j we should prefer to sow timothy seed in Sep- } tember, with the wheat, previous to the last j dragging. The plant acquires a strong, vigorous growth during the fall, and will generally stand the winter, yielding a heavier crop of hay the first season than if sown in I the spring, though it sometimes injures the i wheat crop on land naturally inclined to ! grass. If timothy alone is sown, from half a ! bnehel to a bushel of seed per acre is neces sary, according to the soil—clays requiring j much more seed than rich, mellow loams. i It is sometimes sown alone in August or ; September, and in this way a good crop of I grass is often obtained the following summer. Except in rare cases, we would never sow . timothy on good wheat land, as a rotation ! crop ; for being a cereal, it exhausts the soil j of the same elements as wheat, and our wheat 'oils are not now any too rich, even under 'he best management. If timothy must be grown, let it be on land not well adapted to wheat; and on such soils it must be sown in ; the tnring, as it is apt to winter-kill on low, alluvial land.
