The police were sent for, whereupon all the able bodied men and boys, and many of the women, rose en masse, demolished everything around them, and attacked the jiolice with the fragments and the stones in the yard. The women were the chief actors in the row, and were so determinately obstinate, that they stood to IK* rode doAvn by the mounted police. Emigration was going on to a great extent, scarcely a day 'nut ten or a dozen vessels arriving with live cargoes, bent on gaining fortunes at the mines. These ar rivals were chiefly from the sister colonies : but the tide had just commenced to set in from California and the Sandwich islands, to such an extent, indeed, as to cause some f<-rebodings for the maintainance of tin- pub lic peace. A very general feeling of discon tent prevailed throughout the mining districts in consequence of the new regulations, and the exactions of the government, as noticed in our former advices. The minors had as sumed a menacing attitude ; to a man, they were resolved to resist the obnoxious doubled levv. The Lieutenant Governor, 51 r. Sonic immediate steps were necessary, or all con stituted authority would be set at naught, and Lynch Law be the prevailing code. The number of miners was estimated at 40,001* men. Gold was selling at C 3 per ounce, and the total amount collected up to the end of January was .121,250,000.
