cultural- M:UYI.D cum I\JIRIOIS. 1 recommended a friend, some ■time SMHC, to teed his cattle or. rotton or refuse corn, which he did, and maintained for a while that i' certainly fattened them; but after some time, his steer was paralysed. It, however, o o on recovered upon change ot food. 1 have seen no such effect. I have just killed what we consider good beef, fattened chiefly in that way. A young friend in this ccunty, P. 'Jrave, was the first who suggested it. N. M. C. CAI.M POINT, Virginia, Feb., 1350. Jit marks by the Editors of the An.eriean Agriculturist. —There is great danger of feed ing to animals, diseased or decayed food bf any k.nJ. "Some species of decay are not injurious, others are positively dangerous. The rot in the potato of late years, has in many instances not diminished the fattening properties of the roo'a, s it was the tissues or nitrogenised por tions of it that were decayed, while all the starch from which the fat is principally formed, remains unimpaired for some time after the commencement of the rot. So it is frequently with grain. The starch little liable to decomposition, or disease, and is only induced to it by the proximity (close juxtaposition) of the albuminous (nitrogenised) parts, which communicate incipient fermenta tion, which, under favorable circumstances, rapidly proceed to destructive decomposition. The ill effects of this species of food is shown m the fact quoted by our correspondent above, thet a steer fed upon it became paral ysed, and a change was essentia! to prevent tins terminating fatally. We have known a eiioice herd of swine swept off by feeding on wheal that had been damaged by leakage on ship board. To insure safety under such feed ing. a person must know just what .he ie about, aud the precise quality and condition cfthe article he is feeding. TO PLOItH I\ CLOVUK. &C. Those who have undertaken to plough in green crops, know the d.fticuity frequently at tending tne operation, on account of the liabil ity of the plough to be clogged, and the vege table matter being left uncovered. A corres pondent of the American runner gives the following description of a contrivance he has adopted, which is stated to answer the purpose cornpleteiy : —Saw oft a biock from some hard, curable, and heavy wood ; say about ten inches icng, and three and a hail or four inches in di ameter ; then take a trace chain, about three ' t€ct long, confine one end to the block, by driv ing a smail staple in the end, having first passed the staple through an end link of the chain. Point the other end of the block, and attach a larger chain in the same manner to that. Tie the short chain (attached to the square end of the block,) to the rod which passes through the mould-board and beam of the plough, by wrapping it around the beam at that place ; drop the block in the bottom of a turrow which has been already opened, of course on the mould-board side, draw up the •long chain, and attach that to the clevis pin or cievie;—be sure that you have both chains just tight enough 10 permit the biock to lie in the turrow ; allow no slack. The ahort chain gathers the clover, weeds, &c., and bends them oown ; the weight of the plough prevents the cnain from rising, and the plough laps the dirt over The weeds, while they are in a recumbent position. I am this day turning under weeds as high as the heads of the ploughmen, who are almost wholly concealed. lrom the Germantowa Telegraph. SITING CLOVER SEED. In the January number of the Albany Cul tivator, IE an inquiry from C. VV. Calhcart, re- J specticg the saving of clover seed at the East. I -will give you our mode in Litchfield county, Connecticut. At the proper time for securing the crop, we go with our scythes and mow when the dew is on, being careful to stop as soon as the dew is off. In cloudy or foggy weather we mow ail day. We let it remain in the Ewath till it is cured, then rake it into ; winnow 9, and roll it into small heaps while it is damp with dew. In the after part of the day, thresh or tread it offfroin the straw, either en the barn floor or on a bed made in the field tor the purpose. If it is threshed in the field, it will be necessary to take up the chafTcycry night, as it gathers moisture from the ground, which greatly retards the cleaning. We con. sidcr it best, when we can, to use the barn floor, and let the seed remain untii we finish the field. By keeping the chaff level on the floor, we can work to advantage until the chaff accumulates to the depth of three feet or more. The great eat difficulty in treading it from tne straw with cattle or horses, is the time re quired to shake the chaff from the straw, so that it will not be thrown out with the straw ; but in rny opinion it is decidedly best to use oxen in threshing. In this way a load the size of a ton of hay can be threshed irt three or four floorings, and three turnings to each floor will make it entirely clean. We then carry the cha If to the mill, where it is cleaned in good order for market, for one dollar per bushel. The machine is manufactured by Harmon Baldwin, Esq., of Washington, Litchfield coun ty, Connecticut, and was put up atxl se. run mg in this vicinity, for (I thmkj $l2O. ABRAHAM GRABILL, of this county, was very j ,erioual> afflicted with Liver Complaint, and after trying j in vain various remedies, he purchased a bottle of the | Bitters, and after using it, was so much relieved of his | distressing malady, that he procured another bottle, and j is restored entirely to health." READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS FROM "Tin WELDOS HERALD, "published at Weldcn, N. C'., January 24.1550, which said— " P A TEXT MEDICIXES." " it is very seldom that we make any allusion to Patent Medicines, eithcrapprovingorotherwise. Unfortunately for tiie country, and for honest and conscientious inven j tors and venders of these medicines, the land is becoming ! flooded with quack preparations, that are made alone for profit and are tit not even for the dogs. In this state of things it is hard to tell which are, and which are not worth having If a person gets an indifferent medicine the fust time he purchases, he is very apt to condemn the whole of them and huy no more, and inventors must only blame those of their number, (who ignnrantly combine plain medicines together for the purjioee of making money,) for the ill success which attends the efforts of the deserving." " We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson's 'lloofland's German Bitters' to be a most excellent medicine, and one that should be highly popular in these days of Temperance ; for they are altogether Vegetable in their composition, without one drop of .tlcohidic Spirits in them. This lued nine is innocent, but strengthening in its effects, and rich ly deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, when it becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully enjoy." Jr DOB M. M.NOAH said, in his" WEEKLY MESSEN GER," January 5, 1850 '• Dr. Hvof.and's German Bitters.—llere is a prepara tion which the leading presses in the Union appear to be unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious. | It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the ■ most celebrated physicians of modern times—the 'ale : Dr. Christopher Wilhelni Hoofland, professor to the I'ni j versity of Jena, private physician to the king of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical writers Germany has ever j produced. lie was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore a medicine of which he was the inventor and endorsor may be confidently relied on. lie specially 1 recommended it in Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Vertigo, Acidity of the Stomach, Constipation, and all | complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines Nine Philadelphia I papers express their conviction of its excellency, and sev i er.il of the editors speak of its effects from their own indi ;\ id mil experience I' rider these circumstances, we feet warranted, not only in calling the attention of our readers • lo the present proprietor's (Dr C. M. Jacl s m's) prepara tion. but in recommending the article to all afllicted." MORE E VIDE MCE. The " PiiiLADEUrm* Satibdav Gazette," the best family newspaper published in the Untied States. The editor say s of Dr. HooflaiuTs German Bitters: " It is seldom that we recommend what are termed Pat ent Medicines to the confidence and patronage of our readers ; ami, therefore, when we recommend I)r. lloof land's German Bitters, we wish it to be distinctly under stood that we are not speaking of the nostrums of the day, that are noised about fir a brief period andjlhen forgotten after it has done its guilty race of mischief, but of a med icine long establish! d, universally prized, and which has met the hearty approval of the faculty itself." Evidence upon evidence has been received (like the foregoing) from all sections o! the Union, the last tiiree .years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ol it used in the practice of the regular Physi cians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums combined, a tact that can easily be established, and fully proving that a scientific preparation will meet with their quiet approval when pre sented even in this form. That this medicine will cure Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt alter using it as directed. It acts specifically upon the stom ach end liver; it is preferable to calomel tn all bilious diseases— the effect is immediate. They can be administered to female or infant with safety anil reliable benefit, atony time. BEWARE OF COUNTERFEI TS. This medicine has attained that high charac ter which is necessary for all medicines to at tain to induce counterfeiters to put forth a spu rious article at the risk of the live 9 of those who are innocently deceived Look well to the marks of the genuine.
