Remember that, at all season? of the year, but more especially while your ani mals are kept on irrain, succulent anil fer mentable food, the supplying a liberal allowance of salt, is indispensable to health. Boxes containing it, should be kept con stantly where they can have free access to them, and partake of the sanitive luxury whenever they are disposed to do so. A late French author recommends po tatoes, three-fourths boiled, as a substitute for soap in washing hands. The use ol this prevents chapping in cold wcathei, and retains the skin soft and health} • If you manufacture your own cam cs, immerse the wicks in lime water, in w mi a little nitre, (saltpetre,) has been disso ved, and dry them before dipping, rhc light from such is much clearer, and the tallow will not " run." In burnishing Britannia ware, rub the urface gentlv the first place with a woolen cloth, dipped in sweet oil; then wash in tepid suds, rub with soft lea her and whiting. Articles burnished in this way, retain their lusire till the last, if care fully used. Brass kettles, before using, should be carefully cleansed with salt and vinegar. Woolen goods should be washed in very hot suds, but never" rinsed." Tepid water causes them to shrink. It is a bail plan to put new earthen ware into boiling hot water; it should tirst be plunged into cold water, and placed over a tire where it will heat moderately to the boiling point, and then be permitted to cool again. This process greatly promotes the toughness and durability of common earth enware, which is generally objectionable for domestic uses on account of its fragility. The glazing on this kind of ware w ill re main uninjured by the boiling ii a handful of rve or wheat bran be added to the wa ter, "and prepare it to withstand successful ly, and for a long time, the action of the acid or salt. Suet will be kept perfectly sweet and good the year round, if finely chopped and packed closely in ajar, with the top covered with molasses. Beds should be filled with barley straw in preference to rye, oat, or wheat straw, when obtainable. The husks of Indian corn, carefully selected, and slit into shreds, make an excellent article for beds. They are durable, clean, not very likely to ab sorb moisture, and are not objectionable on account of making dirt. Never permit your domestics to take up ashes in wooden vessels, or to deposite j them when removed from the hearths, in i places where they will come in contact with combustible matters. A few ounces of soda will soften a hun dred gallons of the hardest water. For washing it possesses a marked superiority over pot or pearl ash, giving a delicate whiteness to the linen, without the slight est injury. Gather up all the premature droppings from your apple, pear, peach and plum trees, and either burn or feed them to swine, or other domestic animals. The immature fruit beneath your apple trees contains the cause of the injury you sus tain in your crops, in the fortn of a small worm, and should therefore be destroyed at once. By fencing fruit orchards, and depasturing them with swine during the months of June and July or even till the close of August, if the fruits are of late va rieties, the future health and productive ness of your fruit orchards will be pro tected and increased. Horse radish may be had all winter by taking the roots from the soil when at per fection, grating them and placing the arti de in jars or bottles filled with vinegar. The air should be thoroughly excluded by corking, and covering the nozzles with melted sealing wax. it is a superb article. Green peas may be had from one year's . nd to another, by gathering them when full, shelling and drying them thorough ly in the shade, but where there is a fair circulation of air. When dried, place them in air tight vessels, closely secured by corking, and put them away for use. Beans, green corn, and other vegetables may be preserved in the same way. Cur rants and gooseberries, pickled whcngrcen, carefully divested of their stems and blos som ends, and packed in tight bottles, se curely protected from the air, will retain their soundness and flavor unimpaired for years. Boil and skun your molasses before us- i ing if. When applied for culinary pur- j poses, this is a prodigious improvement. ; Boiling tends to divest it of its unpleasant, | drong flavor, and render it almost equal I to honey. When large quantities are made i use of, it is convenient to prepare several gallons at a time. Cst hard soap to wash your elothes, if, you can obtain that of good quality, and soft soap in cleaning wood. In the wash room, soft soap wattes a good deal, and j for this reason is less economical than hard. j If you keep hens, and desire to render j them a source of profit, as well as luxury, that they are liberally supplied with fl< -h. The fish taken in ordinary streams, j afford an excellent and most grateful sub- j vtitute for the of animals, and can generally be obtained in almost any desir- ! aide quantity, and at comparatively small xpease. "When at large, the hen is car nivorous, and procures much of her daily i food from the resources of the insect j ■world - devouring almost indifferently, and i w itf little disc rimination, all such insects, hugs, flies and worms, as fail in her way. i'litse promote fecundity, and in situations where >Le is deprived of the privilege of catering lor herself, either these, or some ! ldequate substitute, tu the form of more j solid viands, must bo supplied, or she will cease to lay. Neglect of this, is the prin- cip.d cause why hens, closely confined, are so generally complained of as unprofitable. Windham, Me., May, 1850. BLIfkBERRY SVUIP. \\ e are indebted to a friend for the fol lowing receipt for making blackberry syrup. This syrup is said to be almost a specilfie for the Summer Complaint. In 1 ' 1 was successful in more than one case o cholera. To two quarts ol the juice of | blackberries add one pound of loaf sugar, ! OZ. nutmegs, i oz. cinnamon, pulverised. | • oz. cloves, i oz. alspice, pulverised. Boil all together for a short time, and when j cold, add a pint of good fourth proof; brandy. From a teaspoonful to a wine glass, "according to the age of the patient, is to be given. TOMATO PRESERVES. Prepare a syrup by clarifying sugar, melted over a slow fire, with a little water, by boiling it until no scum rises, or good molasses may be clarified by adding eggs, boiling, and carefully skimming. Take the tomatoes while green, put them in cold syrup, with one orange sliced to every two pounds ol tomatoes. Simmer them over a slow lire for two or three hours. There should be equal weights of sugar and to matoes. Some, when superior preserves are wanted, add fresh lemons sliced, and boil with the tomatoes a few peach leaves and powdered ginger in bags. Tomatoes, when ripe, make a fine preserve, peeled and treated as above ; but the fruit is apt to fall to pieces in the process of preserv ing, consequently more care is required when it is desirable to prevent this. ELDER WIXE. This wine is considered an excellent remedy in influenza, sore throat, <tc. RECEIPT.—To every quart of berries put two quarts of water, boil half an hour, break the fruit, and run the liquor through a hair sieve ; then to every quart of juice put three quarters of a pound of Lisbon sugar, coarse, but not the very coarsest. Boil the whole a quarter of an hour, with some Jamaica peppers, ginger, and a few cloves. Pour it into a tub, and when of a proper warmth, into the barrel, with toast and yeast to work, which is more difficult to make it do than most other liquors.— When it ceases to hiss, put a quart of brandy to eight gallons, and stop up. Bot tle in the spring or at Christinas. The liquor must be in a warm place to make it work. HO! FOR CALIFORNIA! GOLD! GOLD!! Great Bargains at Tlioma* Cheap Cash Store!! During the last summer,! son of MB ABRAHAM CRABILL, of this county, was very seriously afflicted with Liver Complaint, and after trying In vain various remedies, he purchased a bottle of the Bitters, and after using It, was so much relieved of his distressing malady, that hepr<xurcd another bottle, and Is restored entirely to health." C., January 51,1-50, which said— " PATENT MEDICINES "It is vcry seldom that we make any allusion to Patent Medicines, either approving or otherwise, rnfoxtunatety for the country, and for honest and conscientious Inven tors and venders of these medicines, the land Is becoming flooded with quackpreparations, that are made alone for profit and are fit not even for the dogs. In this state oi things It is hard to tell which are, and which are not worth having. If a person gets an indifferent medic-use the first time be purchases, he is very apt to condemn the whole of them and buy no more, and inventor? must only blame those of their number, (who ignorantly combine plain medicines together for the purpose of making money,) for the ill success which attends the efforts of the -Reserving ." " We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson's ' Hoofland's German Bitters' to be a most excellent medicine, and one that should be highly popular in these day? of Temperance; for they are altogether Vegttablt in their composition, without one drop of .ileocolic Spirits in them. This me 4 icine Is innocent, but strengthening in its effects, and rich ly deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, when il becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully enjoy." JvnoE M. M.NOAH said, in his " WEEKLY MESSES OES." January 5.1550. " Dr. Hcojiand's German Bitters Here is a prepare tion w bich the leading presses in the Union appear to be unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the most celebrated physicians of modern limes—the late Dr. Christopher Wifhehn Hoofhnd, professor to the Uni versity of Jena, private physician to the king of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical writers Germany lias ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy of and therefore a medicine of which he was the inventor and endorsor may bo confidently relied on. lie specially recommended it in Liver Complaint, Byspepsu, Debility, Vertigo, Acidity of the Stomach. Constipation, and all complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellency, and sev eral of the editors speak of its effects from tberr own indi vidual experience. Cndcr these circumstances, we ft el warranted, not only In callingthe attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr C M ,Jackson's) prepara tion, but in recommending the article to all afflicted." MORE EVIDENCE. The " PIiILiDBLI'IIIA HATixixy <saxetts," the be* family newspaper published in the United States. Tin editor says of Dr. Honflaiufs German Bitters: " It is seldom that we recommend what are termed Pat ent Medicines to the confidence and patronage of oti re ad ers ; and, therefore, w hen we recommend Dr. Hoof land's German Bitters, we wish it to be distinrtlv under stood that we arc n<>i speaking ofthe nostrums ofthedafi that ore noised about for a brief period andjthen forgotten after it has done its guilty race of mischief, but of a two' icine long established, universally prised, and which la* met the hearty approval of the faculty itself." Evidence upon evidence has been receive, (like the foregoing) from nil sections of tiff Union, the last three years, anil the str on first testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ot it used in the practice of the regular Physi cians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be established, and fully proving that a scientific preparation will meet with their quiet approval when pre sented even in this form.
