No sable pall, no waving plume- No thousand torch lights to illume No parting glance, no heavy tear, Is seen to fall upon the bier; There is not one of kindred clay To watch the coilin on its way ; No mortal form, no human breast, Cares where the pauper s bones may rest But one deep mourner follows there. Whose grief outlives the tuneral prayer, He does not sigh—he does not weep But will not leave the sodiess heap. Tis he who was the poor man's mate, And made tr.ni more content with fate— The mongrel dog that shared his crust Is all that stands beside his dust. He bends his listening head as though He thought to hear a voice below , He pines to miss that voice so kind, And wonders why he's left behind. The sun goes down, the night is come He needs no food, he seeks no home ; But. stretched upon the dreamless bed, With doleful howl calls back the dead. The passing gaze may coldly dwell On all that polished marble tell; Kor temples built on church-yard earth Are claimed by riches more than worth. But who would mark, with undimmed eyes, The mourning dog that starves and dies? Who would not ask—who would not crave Such love and faith to guard his grave ? agricultural. From the Gerraantown Telegraph IRRIGATION. Without a due quantity of water, the pabulum of plants, or that which supports vegetable lite, cannot be rendered soluble. No matter how prelete may be the soil with the elements of nutrition, if water be absent, or only occasionally and parsimo niously supplied, it will be unproductive and unfertile, whatever course of system of tillage we may adopt. While cold water stultifies and even destroys the crop, when permitted to remain too long upon the surface or in immediate contact with the roots, yet its effects when judiciously applied, are highly salutary and invigorat ing. This is often seen in the highly beneficial action of the wash from the highways, and water from other sources, when directed over mowing fields, and other grounds. Tons of excellent hay are annually added to the fanner's pro duce. in a succession of years, where noth ing would grow of consequence without this wash. Not long since, in the course of a morn ing's excursion over a friend's estate, 1 noticed by the side of a traveled road, a long strip of luxuriant grass, extending from the fence, toward the centre of the held, which was somewhat depressed, or of a concave form, superficially considered, and was informed that the superior luxuri ance and verdure of the section was at tributable to the opening of a viaduct, which conducted the wash of the road over its surface during the thawing of the winter's snow, and the copious rains of the fall and spring. The whole iield had the appearance of great fertility ; but this section was unusually rich. More than double the quantity of produce had been taken from it since it received the first ir rigation, and such, no doubt, will be the result for years, or indeed so long as it shall be continued and the land remains in grass. On this subject, one of the erudite authors over whose pages I delight to learn when time can be afforded, and I am not too much occupied with agrestic affairs, in some very judicious reflections upon this matter, observes : " The idea generally is that the increase | of production results not so much from the water as from the fructifying materials I conveyed along with it—the droppings of j cattle, sheep, swine, 6LC. Hut if we re lied a moment, we will perceive that the amount of these droppings is by no means equal to the effect produced. The simple cold water running from a spring, flashed over ground in the spring and fall, will have nearly as great effect as water washed from the roads. The washings from the melting snow, or from spring and fall rains, is as good and as strong a stimulant as the i earth will at any time require." This assertion is undoubtedly true where the "oil is replete with humus in a state ol decomposition, and where water alone is requisite to reduce it to that condition in which it is capable of being appropriated or taken up by the roots of plants ; but barren soils require a more fructifying ap plication to endue them with productive powers. TURNER $ HALE'S Compound Syrup ol"*i>itfelia or Vegetable Vermifuge, The moat effectual, the safest, pleasant est and most convenient Worm Medicine ever offered to the public. tpilE SPIGEI.IA, says a work of highest authority, stands at the head of the list of Anthelmintics or li'crm .Medicines. It is adapted to a wider range of cases, and to a greater variety of constitutions and states of the constitution, than any other. Bat prepared as it com monly is, in the form of tea, it can seldom be given to children in sufficient doses. In Harris, Turner At Hale's Compound -Syrup, it is so concentrated that the dose is very small, so combined as to ensure a purgative opera tion, and so palatable as to be taken, notuiily with ease, but with positive pleasure. The precise composition of this syrup and the mode of preparing it, are the result of a series of experiments continued for years. Before offering it for sale, it was" subjected to the lest of experience in the hands of emi nontphysicians, in Philadelphia and elsewhere, who have recommended it in the highest terms, and still employ it in their practice. In addition to this evidence of its mer its, we offer the following, eeteetcd from a number of un solicited testimonials Ist. A distinguished physician of Virginia, of much experience, writes of it thus: "1 should have written before this, but felt disposed fir„t to try the efficacy of your Vermifuge. 1 have used more than half the quantity received, and ihe experiment has been most successful. I really btlure that if posses ses advantage e over any other Vermifuge /hart tver used. Independent of the amallness of the dose, and the plea santness of the syrup (great advantages in dosing chil dren) the advantage of administering it under a variety of circumstances, enhances its value; indeed there is scarcely a condition of the system in which it may not he administered. Yours, Ac." 2d. A respectable physician of Lebanon county, in this slate, writes " I have been in the babitof prescribing your Compound Syrup of Spigelia for some time past, and have found it an excellent worm medicine, particularly for children - Phase forward per bearer 2 doz. bottles.—Yours,icc." 3d.—An intelligent merchant of Virginia to whom wc had previously sold the syrup, writes : "Since my return home, I find that your Syrup of Spi gelia has come into general use in this neighborhood. We have sold what we had on hand, and it gave such satis faction that it is now called for evey day. You will please put us up 5 or 6 dozen in a small package, and send to the care of \V. Anderson & Co., Richmond, as soon as possi ble, and forward ihe bill per mail.—Yours, &c." 4ih.—A respectable merchant of Ohio, on a late visit to Philadelphia, stated, that some time since he had been ap plied to by a customer lor a vial of 's Ver mifuge fur his son. Not having the article asked for, he advised a trial of Harris, Turner & llale's Compound Ryrupof Bpigelia and gave him a part of a bottle which was all that remained in the store. A day or two after this the gentleman returning to the store, expressed his surprise and delight at the effect of the Syrnp, declaring it had expelled 200 worms and entirely relieved his son The merchant added an expression of his great regret that he had not had on hands a bottle of the Byrup at the time when his own little daughter died, as he confidently be lievedjt would have saved her life. sth—A gentleman of Hudson, N. Y., having sent a bot tleoi Harris, Turner th Hale's Compound Byrup of Bpt gelia, to a young friend who had tried in vain a great num ber of worm medicines, writes, that his friend was imme diately relieved ; the words of the patient were : "Ittook every worm out my body." CHAS. ROBINSON, Esq., Kaston, MD , in a letter to Dr. Jackson, January 9, 1850, said — " My wife and myself have received more benefit from your medicine than any other we have ever tukenforlbe Dyspepsia and Liver disease." "THL TENTH LF.OION," published at Woodstock, Va., January 10, 1850, said— " A GREAT MEDICINES " Wo have uniformly refrained from recommending to the public any of the various Patent Medicines of the day, unless thoroughly convinced of their value. Among these we consider worthy of notice is the German Bitters, invented by Dr. Ifofland, and prepared by Dr Jackson, in Philadelphia One instance in particular, in which the superior virtues of this medicine has been tested, has fal len under our observation. During the last summer, a son of MB. ABRAHAM GBABILL, of this county, was very seriously afflicted with Liver Complaint, and after trying in vain various remedies, he purchased a bottle of the Bitters, and after using it, was so much relieved of his distressing malady, that he procured another bottle, and is restored entirely to health " READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS EBOM " TUB WSLDON HERALD," published at Weldon, N. C., Januarv 24,1>50, which said — " PATENT MEDICINES:' " It is very seldom that we make any allusion to Patent M-die ines, either approving or other w i?e. Unfortunately for the country, and for honest and conscientious inven tors and venders of these medicine?, the land is becoming flooded with quack preparations, that are made alone for profit and are fit not even for the dogs. In (his state of things it is hard to tell which are, and which are not worth having. If a person gets an indifferent medicine the first time he purchases, he is very apt to condemn the whole of them and buy no more, and mv>-ntors must only blame those of their number, (who ignorantly combine plain medicines together for the purpose of making money,) for the ill success n tin h attends the efforts of the deserving." " We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson's ' Hoofland's German Bitters' to be a most excellent medicine, and one that should be highly popular in these days of Temperance ; for they are altogether Uegetable in their composition, w iihout one drop of .ileohohc Spirits in tbem. This med trine is innocent, but strengthening in its effects, and rich ly deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, w hen it becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully enjoy." JI'DOB M. M. NOAH said, in his " WEEKLY MESSEN GER," January 5. 1350. "Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters . Here is a prepara tion which the leading presses in the Union appear to be unanimous in recommending, and the reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the most celebrated physicians of modern times —the late Dr. Christopher Wilhelm Hoofland, professor to the Uni versity of Jena, private physician to the king of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical writers Germany has ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore a medicine of which he was the inventor and endorser may be confidently relied on. He specially recommended it tn Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Vertigo, Acidity of the Stomach. Constipation, and all complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestine? Nunc- Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellency, and sev eral of the editors speak of its effects from their own indi vidual experience. Under these circumstances, we feel warranted, not only in calling the attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr C. M Jackson's) prepara tion, but in recommending the article to all afflicted." MORE EVIDENCE. The " PHILADELPHIA SATURDAY GAZETTE," the best family newspaper published in the United States The editor says of Dr. Ifoofiand's German Bitters: " It is seldom that we recommend what are termed Pat ent Medicines to the confidence and patronage of our readers; and, therefore, when we recommend Dr Hoof land's German Bitters, we wish it to be distinctly under stood that we are not speakingof the nostrums of the day, that are noised about for a brief period and]then forgotten after tt has done its guilty rare of mischief, but of a med icine long established, universally prized, and which h3s met the hearty approval of the faculty itself." Evidence upon evidence hag been received (like the foregoing) from oil sections of the Union, the last three years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ot it used in the practice of the regular Physi cians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be established, and fully proving that a scientific preparation will meet with their quiet approval when pre sented even in this form. That this medicine will cure Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt after using it as directed. It acts specifically upon the stom ach nd liver; it is preferable to calomel in all bilious diseases —the effect is immediate. They can be administered to FEMALE or INFANT with safety and reliable benefit, at any time. BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS. This medicine has attained that high charac ter which is necessary for all medicines to at tain to induce counterfeiters to put forth a spu rious article at the risk of the lives ot those who are innocently deceived. Look well to the marks of the genuine. They have the written signature of C. M. JACKSON upon the wrapper, and the name blown in the bottle, without which they are spurious. Lorain Uo , Ohio, wrote December 19, 1843: " Af ter allowing the Brant's Medicines which you sent to us, to remain at Cleveland about three months, we sent for them We have been so often deceived by such medicines nit proving to be equal to their recommendations, and therefore would not sell, when their wßiit ot efficacy was known, that we considered it unprofitable to keep such, and were therefore prejudiced against Brant's, supposing it to be no better than many others we have on sale. After we had received Brant's. I, (A. Holtstander) was persuaded from reading the pamphlet to take a bottle of tho Pulmonary Bal sam home. My wife had been afflicted with a severe cough for about ten months, and our friends were alarmed and fearful that she would find nothing to relieve or cure her. But notwithstanding our prejudices to patent medicines, wc are obliged to say. and cheerfully confess, that BRANT'S BALSAM and PURIFYING EXTRACT, can bo depended on io preference to any or all of the many kinds that have been left with U9 tor sale. My wife was immediately relieved In her cough, and before she had finished using the first bottle, began to gain strength and health, and only three bottles effected a perfect cure. The Pt'RiFTtwo Bi TRACT I have personally used for a general debility of the system, and 1 have ao hesitansy in saying that it is the best nisdi cine to restore end invigorate the system, that I have ever found. In every instance where we have sold these medi cines they have proved their efficacy, and given the be* l satisfaction." FOR SALE BY ALFRED Jtf .IRKS, Lncistotrn, (J. IF. BREHALIN", JilcVeytown, M.
