Komantla Lord Lytton woe, but not inperstltlons. His death, however, has lewed the story of the yellow boy's room, the ghost chamber said to exist nt Knebworth houee, the beautiful anoes txnl homo of tho Lyttous for more than 000 years. At Jtr. W. P. Filth's door most the chnrgo be laid of having put Ibe Interesting talo In circulation, for we find it first in his engaging volume of "ilemlnlscenoes." After relating West wood's experiences with the weird wom an of the liaison Blob, the painter sup plements tho story by another anecdote of wore tragical significance. "At Knebworth," ho Bays, "tho seat Of Lord Lytton, there is a bedchamber called the yellow boy's room," Ho then proceeds to relate that during a visit to knebworth, Lord Uastlerengh, while tho Siest of tho grandfather of the late ritlsh embassador to Paris, was ae- I signed without a word of wnjnlng to the mysterious and haunted room. Feeling I very tired ho soon dropped into sleep, i bnt his uneasy slumbers were troubled and It was not long beforo he awoko. . What It wai which startled him his lord ship never knew, but the sight which met his oyeis as ho gazed at the still burn lng lire In his room was startling enough. Tbo-Hgure of a boy, with long, yellowish hftlr streaming down, sat in front of the , fireplace with his back toward the Irish nobleman. As tne latter looked, tho lad arose, tnrned toward him, and drawing back the curtain at the bottom of the bed with one hand, with tho other ho drew his fingers two or threo times across his throat. Of course the Impression produced on Uastlcreagh was decidedly disturbing. Dulwer insisted that he must haro beon dreaming, but his lord ship declared with empbasis that bo saw the figure as distinctly as he saw his host at that moment, and that, far from being asleep, he was wide owako. A TCltniDLr. EXPERIENCE. ilr. Frith then adds that Mr. Dulvrer did not tell Lord Castlereagh Dyron'a "carotid cutting Oastlereagh" that tho yellow boy always appeared to any one who was destined to dlo a violent death and always indicated the manner of it to hla victim. A more amusing and less unpleasant incident is told of tho eamo chamber at Knebworth by our artist author, the subject being a timid, nervous brother painter who spent a night at tho poet's lovely and stately retreat in Hertford shire. The father of the author of "Lu cile," Mr. Frith says, confided the de tails of tho Castlereagh story to his guest on allotting the yellow boy's room to him, remarking on bidding him good night, "You will not bo frightened, will you?' "No oo," said the pointer, with an ashy face, "Woll, it is getting late; what do yon say to retiring? Yes, that is your candle. Too warm for a flro in your room. You don't mind? Good tugnt. " i no rest or tne story snau bo told," says Frith, "in my old friend's words as nearly as I can remember thorn. I had seen," ho went on, "the infernal room beforo dinner, and I thought it looked a ghostly sort of place, and when I reached it that night what would I not havo given to bo back in my own room at home! I looked under the bed, up tho great, wide ohimnoy, and had a shock from the sight of my own faco in the looking glass. No ghost could be whiter, than I was. 1 don't believe in ghosts, you know, but still it was really too bad of Lytton to toll me such things just as 1 was going to bed, and then to put me in tho very place! Thero was an awful old cabinet, 1 managed to pull open the door and was tugging at the other, when my candle wont out how, I don't know somebody seemed to blow it ont. 1 cant tell you what becamo of it; all 1 know is 1 jumped into bod with my boots on, and lay trembling thero for hours, Frith literally for hours till sleep took ine at last; and nevor was 1 more thankful than when I awoke and taw tho sun shining into the yellow boy's room." KO TRUTH IN TUB STORY. The clroumstantiallty with which Mr. Frith tells these short tales must con vince liis readers that ho is thoroughly satisfied in his own mind that the inci dents which he carefully describes all happened nt Knebworth. And yet, in that respect, he is altogether ont in Ids reckoning. Thero is no yellow boy's room in that grand old house of the Lyt toni at Knebworth. Lord Castlereagh never spent a night there, nor is it known that he ever lsited the place in his life. In tho autumn of 1834 I spent two or three very agreeablo days at Knebworth, tho guest of Lord Lytton.who very kindly showed me everything of interest about his home and its charming surroundings. 1 thought it strange that the yellow boy's room if there really was such a room hod not been open to me, and that tho very story associated with it in the Frith reminiscences had beon kept back. Bo 1 sent off a hurried note to Owen Morodlth, then performing his embassa- dorlal functions In the gayest capital In Europe, and an early mall brought me tnese lines- 'Paris, 8th Fob'y. 1868. 'My Dbar Mu. Stewaiit I answer your letter of the 12th ulto. in desperate und unavoidable hasto. Mr Fnth's autobiography is all wrong about the story of tho 'Yellow Boy.' That story was told by Bir Walter Bcott of Lord Cnstlercagh, who is said to have seen 10 'Yellow Boy' ,1a soino house in Ire land at tho time when he was secretary fur Iroland, just beforo the union, and tho story went that the apparition then predicted to nun tne moae or ms aeatn. Ont tho incident certainly did not occur at Knebworth, nor do I think Lord Castlereagh was ever there. Yours very fAlthfullr. Lytton." The OaetlereBgh story is quite familiar a the readers of Bcott and Lockhart's hle biography. - Independent Sluinll'). Simplify! That is tho secret.
