The rottiTillo Republican In speaklnc of undesirable cltliens In Its own county of Schuylkill terseoy makes the following utterances which apply as appropriately to one section of the country as another. The making ot "American citizens" (or properly rolera) Is progressing In Schuyl kill county with a celerity which Is not commendable from any point of view. A Berks county Judgo, whoso opinion we quoted a few dajB sluce, seems to us to have contained the true American spirit, tie held that a man who knew nothing of the English language, know not under what form of goyerment he had previously lived, nor of what form of government he desired to swear allegiance, was not a proper subject to become an accredited cltUen of the American Republic. This Is sound Democratic-Republican doctrine. The fathers of this Republic In framing the Declaration of Indcpondenco and form ing their Constitution set forth very clear ly "the cause which Impelled them to the separation from the mother country" and also laid down a system of new govern ment In which they Invited the oppressed of all nations to share. But It is plainly implied, If not specifically stated, by both these documents that there must be a cause for renunciation of one as well aB a reason for the adoption of the other. And this we think was the ground upou which the Berks county Judge based bis action In refusing naturalization to a self-confessed Ignoramus. How many of Ibis kind of people, but recently brought here from foreign coun tries under little better system than the old African slave trade, have become naturalized citizens voters, endowed with the power to govern. How many of these Imported contract labor men who know little of our language, nothing of our his tory and less of our pilnclpals, of govern ment will Atand up at the polls and kill yote for vote that of the President of the United States, that of the Presidents of our belt colleges, our best business and professional men ? It is a sad state of affairs to contemplate. It Is well to say that "in America all men are equal." But have the sbackels of serfdom been stricken from these thousands of contract labor im portations and bandits It that tbev should ex trctse the rights of free American citizen ship ? This Is a question worth pondering. Communicated. BE HONEST. Eh. Carbon Advocate: During the past week we have heard a number of honest Democrats (not kickers or bolters) In this nd of the county, ask tbls question Why does E. H. Raucb the senior editor and proprietor of the Jlauch Chunk Democrat confine his search for crookedness entirely to Mr. Seminal, the Democratic nominee for Register and Recorder ?(Echo answers why)? From a Democratic stand point, would it not be consistent and in order for Mr. Ranch to extend his search tor crookedness to Mr. Handwerk, the pre' sent incumbent. Judging from the tone of the Lansford Secoril last week we think It wonld. Right here we would suggest that if Editor Rauch will kindly call upon E. R. Selwers, Esq., he can probably procure for publication that long list of Illegal charges against Haudwerl with full particulars, prepared by Mr, Selwers tor publication In the event he (Mr.Selwers)would receive the nomination for Register and Recorder. H'e have been told that this list, If published, would fill a much larger space In the Democrat than that occupied In bis last issue against Mr. Semmel. As a Democrat we haye aright to demand fair play from the editor of the Democratic Organ, and If not complied with, we udght be justified In saying We fear that Editor E. H. Rauch (recently defeated for the nomination for Assembly) Is a Democrat for Political Revenue only, and In the event Mr. Selwers should re fuse to furnish his carefully prepared Illegal cbarge'against Mr. Handwerk for publication, then It might also bo In per fect order to placo that gentleman In the same category. Gentlemen, Consistency Is a Jewel. A Dehoohat. The Democratic ticket ai a whole Is worthy the support of every Democrat in this county. Let there be n grand rally and a glorious election. The Summit Hill and Lansford Hecoril come out last week In a new dress the occasion being lis birthday anniversary. At the head of its editorial column tae Democratic State and county ticket stood out In bold relief, while the body of the paper was such as to Indicate a "first-class party organ." It is generally understood that Weiss port is to haye an electric light plant, Naturally It will be some months before the enterprise assumes definite shape, but in the meantime we would kindly suggest that council talk over the matter of elec trie street Illumination. It is yery neces sary that "there be light." "Old Rauou" is still over the traces on the county ticket, and will yery likely stay tharl He Is publishing some great "rot" about the Democratic candidates, particularly Frank P. Semmel whom he be labors with a blaok thorn. But It won't hurt Frank other than to help roll up Ids majority. Everybody knows Rauch and his "for revenue only." A tear ago the Advocate made the suggestion that the churches hold nnlon services on the occasion of the anniversary of the massacre of the Moravians of Unaden Djutten which occurred on No vember 20, 1745. It was passed by Jn silence, so we again call the attention of th clergy to It and ask that they observe Jn some appropriate way this conspicuous eyent In the early history of our county and town. POLITICAL POT rouiuti. fcy-Folltlca are as cold as charity In Btpka township. The enthusiasm which was manifested with such a spirit during other campaigns Is forgotten. Neither parties seem to have a desire In making the campaign a heated oue. Little money la being spent by the candidates on the election and the "Button JTolwa" who baye been In the habit of having their "paws" greased for their Vt pocket In fluence for years past will suffer in want on this occasion, we fear. for. f hAMWBB I We have In stock an elegant assortment of the most fashionable styles In Coats, Wraps & Jackets, In waeonsble weight, oolora, Ac.
