Keeping Winter Apples.
An experienced frull-dcaler savs ho
doea not want to put apples In thetcllar
or fruit room, until there Is a little hoar
frot Insldo tho barrel. If good, sound
apples, and only such, are put In the
barrel, and the apples aro well shaken
down, and the head pressed In so that
there Is no danger of the apples shaking
pi tho barrel, a slight frost will not hurt
them. Hy this we mean, that the barrel
can be exposed to quite a sharp frost
for a short time, w ithout its penetrating
deep enough into tho barrel to chill tho
fruit to an Injurious extent. The great
secret of keeping apples through the.
winter K to storo them iu a wcll-vcntl
lated room or cellar, that Is kept as near
tho freezing point as possible, without
actually freezing the apples. Apples
and potatoes should never be kept in
same cellar, or If this is unavoidable,
the potatoes should be kept lu the warm
est part of the cellar, and the barrels of
apples, well headed up.near tho window-
where, on days when the air outside is
only n few degrees above freezing, thev
can bu treatcn to a cold breeze from the
open windows, while at the same time
Urn atmosphere in tho part of the cellar
where the potatoes are kept, does not
fall below forty degrees. With a ther
mometer in tho cellcr, it is quite possi
ble to cool off tho apples williout Injur
ing the potatoes. Do not ttnhcad the
barrels until the apples are wanted. It
is rarely a good plan to sort over the
apples to pi'ik out tho rotten ones
Hotter let theni remain undisturbed.
Apples in llpcnlng, give off carbonic
acid, which can not be allowed to ac
cumulate iu the .house collar, but must
bo removed by ventilation. Tills
deleterious gas, carbonic ncld, aids lu
preserving the fruit, and' It is one of the
advantages of an outside cellar, that

Utilizing Drain Water.
Prairie farms in the West are often,
In late summer, Insullleicntly supplied
with water, while the soil in tho spring
is saturated. Drainage Is becoming very
common, and is indispensable in most
pai t3 of tho est, where the land, In
the winter, is so filled with water that
the roads are in many-places Impassible,
The object of draining Is, to get rid of
this water, but if this object can he
secured and the water utilized, the only
valid objection urged against thorough
drainage, viz.: that the water Is carried
off from the soil and wasted, will he
avoided. We should learn from the
experience of other countries In tills
respect. British India, for Instance,
has a rainy season, and a dry seasot
nnd the large winter rain fall, is stored
iu capacious reservoirs, for use In the
severe drouths which follow. Xow the
summer drouths in the West are at times
exceedingly trying, and very great In
convenience is suffered for want of
water for stock, while at other seasons,
the drains are carrying off enormous
quantities from the land. Most of tho
rain-fall conies in the winter, and is
sufficient to cover the entire surface of a
farm to tlio depth of two feet. Tills
water Hows away, uselessly, and as
much of It a3 possible should bo stored.
It may ho stored iu cUlcrns dug all
along the lines of the main drains, and
the overflow from these cisterns would
pass off through the lower drains.
Watering places may also be made for
tho stock near these cisterns, and pumps
could bo used to bring up water when
tho drains are not flowing. A windmill
would raise the waterintoatrough, and
tho overflow from it could run back Into
Iho cistern, so that the trough would be
always full without wasting a drop. The
cost of tho work could bo easily made
up iu ono year hy the saving of labor in
watering twenty head of stock. Am.

Nothing Slow in This.
Slowness is not a desirable quality in
these business limes. There Is nothing
slow about St. Jacobs Oil, It goes to
the spot at once and cures. No matter
"how serious the attack of rheumatism,
how deep the cut. or how severe the
wound, by. Its magical power It removes
all pain
Scalding Fiejina Hosjshsad.
A hogshead or big barrel, is often the
handiest tiling a farmer has to scald Ids
pigs in. When it is inclined lo ono side,
and tlio pigs are slid Into it fiomawood
sled, used for a scraping table, It works
very well, but the small quantity of
water it will hold when iu this position
soon gets cold, or too cold, nnd long
delays are often caused If many pigs aro
to be. scalded. To avoid, this delay, and
use -the hogshead in anupright position,
a lever may be rigged like a well sweep,
using a crotch stick for the post, and a
strong polo for tho sweep, a white oak
stick such as every farmer who can do
bhould have laid up to season. Tlio iron
i od on which the sweep moves must be
strong and btiff. A (race chain Is
attached to the upper end, and If tho
end of the chain has a ring instead of a
hook it will be quite as convenient. In
use, a table is improvised, unless a
strong one for tho purpose is at hand,
aud this is set near tlio barrel. A noose
U made with the chain ttbouflhe leg of
tho pig, and ho Is soused In, going
entirely under water, lifted out when
the liribtloji start easily, and laid upon
the table, while another is made ready.

of Friends of Philadelphia, held Xov.
L'Jird, 18S.-,:
Wiii:ih:as tho members of the Tem
perance Association of Friends of
Philadelphia, desirous that an amend
ment to the Constitution prohlbltingtho
manufacture and sale of intoxicating
drinks In tho State of Pennsylvania
shall be adopted by tho Legislature nnd
submitted to a vote of the people at the
earliest practicable day, recognize the
fact that any legislation which Is great
ly in advance of public sentiment is un
ileslr.ible,becausc incapable of execution;
therefore,
Itr.soi.vno, That we advise all friends
of prohibition and temperance in Penn
sylvania to join lunula In opposition to
the present system of indiscriminate
license for the sale of Intoxicants, and
in urging upon tho Legislature at Its
next session the passage of a good prac?
ieal local option law.
l!r.soi,vi;ii. That we believe, the re
enactment of a local option law will en
able may election districts In our State
to adopt prohibition, ami thereby great
ly improve the social, financial and mor
al condition of their population. The
Improvement which the experience of
other sections has shown to uniformly
follow tlio enforcement of prohibitory
laws bringing about a tlecreai-e of
crime, pauperism and taxation, and an
Increase of wealth, domestic happiness
and prosperity of every kind should
powerfully influence other districts to
follow In line, and thus advance the
good of all classes of people In our noble
Commonwealth.

"A sunny temper glitls tbo edges of
me s darkest clouds;" and In this world
of vexation and sorrow such n temper Is
of IiieUl.iiible value, not only to ils
owner but to all who are within reacii
of its beams. How w oleoma is tiiu
coming of a guest who checra us by his
cheerful face, his merry laugh, his live
ly song, his rippling, genial talk, which
lifts us out of tlio reslon of morbid re
trospect, or foreboding, who by a hap
py turn of tlio conversation parries the
hasty, irritating word, and restores the
clear sky of social kindliness again.
A naturally sunny temper Is like the
sun itself, dilfuslng light ami Invlgora
tion unconsciously; but there is such a
thing as a determined cultivation of
this element of "sweetness and light"
even lu a naturally uncongenial soil,
and the steady plucking up of the
weeJs of discontent and selfishness.
Tho forcing, If need be, of tho Hps and
eyes to smile and tho tonguo and voice
to speak cheerfully and sing joyously
Mill bring its reward. Poor human na
ture covets more sunshine and responds
to Its influence, but depreciates and
avoids gloom nntl nioroscness:
"J.'iiirIi, and tlio uoilil .uuslis Willi you;
Weep, ami J on w 'cp alone.
I-'nr this sad old earth must tiorrmv Itsinlilli
It lias trouble emmgli nf Its nun."
And even material nature seems, In
its way, to recognize the presence of n
joyful spirit, and gives back an answer
of peaco ami comfort:
M.if . nml the lillls will answer;
Sli!l. It Is lost on the nil-.
Tlio echoes bcuml to a Jnjfnl sound,
nut siirinK ironi volrlns rare."
Kspecially should christians cultivate
