It is a timo for both and nil parties to lay out their utmost strength, and waste no voles and sparo no labor. Faction and eccentrici ty and impracticable independence aro un wise and dangerous. But thero are limits to usjful and becom ing acquiescence in parly policy which aro prescribed by the precept that wo shall not do evil that good may come. If a party. call it what you will, and on whichever side of our national issues it may be, and how ever important their triumph may be, pro ceeds to gain its end by oveniding morality or corrupt bargaining, or by sacrificing or Icmaniling tho sacrifice, of conscientious scruples on tho part of those who honor tho general principles of tho party, or by nomi natiug candidates purely for availablencss and not for competency, character, integrity then il i3 tho higher duty of thoso who fed that truth virtue and conscience aro al ways tho supreme interest of tho country and beforo any success of parly menure, to stand by their consciences; to voto by llici consciences, to adhcro lo tho right and the tine. But they nro not tho foes to ma ehinery who when some iil-conlriycd ma chine is seen to bo involving and wiccking intercuts more sacred than its own ends, re fuse to feed tho fires that turn that partial lar kind of machinery they refuse, to scrv or to use. The world so far as it is worth saving, society so far ns it is safe and hope ful, Is run by a different soit of machinery than that which controls primary meetings and district caucuses and parly conventions. There is such a thing ns moral machinery It was that soitof machinery that abolished slavery after political machinery had failed for a century nearly lo loosen its malignant wwer a hair. It was thatsortof machinery that maintained and fought out tho war for tho Union. There aro times when tho dams and the stream aro moro important than tho spindles and tho mill wheels, when public sentiments need more attention than public measures and much moro than parly plat forms and nominations. Yes, machinery by nil means, but not bail nml low mid dis gusting machinery, not machinery that makes il necessary to volo fur candidates convicted of abuses and peculation by legis lative committees of an unpartisan character. Would it bo nothing if thirty thousand in- deponent voters of cither pally, by striking nil' from cither ticket names that stand lor dubious, dark and selfish aims made that illfluicura between their voto and the maxi mum vote attained by men for whom It is no strain on consrionco to voto heartily? I do not euro to savo any policy ut tho cost of any principle. Right ends by right means; good, by good ways. This is tho Christian policy. I counsel all who believo ill tho imperative voico of duty to vole only for men they bcliovo honest, conqictcut and faithful and lo trust dud that iv such n course they are taking tho surest way of saving their country and their own souls.
