The thieving Beauty.
ey as.nIS h. jxnuuE.
Ilbr namo was Regina Arlington. A
creature more winsomo nnd beautiful could
not bo imagined, and so I said to tho lady
whoso guests wo both wore.
" Yes," replied Mrs. Mnnvcrs,constraincd
ly, to my enthusiastic remark. "Yes, sho is
quito attractive," and Instantly changed tho
subject.
" Attractive I" I echoed, stubbornly refus
ing to follow my hostess' lead, "why shd is
perfectly nngclicl"
" Yes," again returned the lady, with tho
samo strange constraint, "I liavo a hoUso
full of guests with lar jo claims to beanty,
but Miss Arlington certainly bears off tho
palm."
At this I leaned forward and looked keen
ly in Mrs. Manvcr's eyes. Then I said :
" Wo nro old friends. Julia, tell mo what
you nro trying to hide. Why can't you bo
your own earnest self about this charming
creature?"
Sho flushed deeply, and turned her eyc3
uneasily awny.
" Can it be," I thought, "that Julia is
jealous of tho girl on account of her own
young sistcn?"
Tie unworthy thought wis murdered as
soon as born, and tho next Minuto Mrs.
Man vers' voico coffined it.
" You aro discreet," she said,in a low tone,
tho flush giving plaeo to a look of distress;
"I call, therefore, trustinyou. Mis3 Arling
ton is, I believe, a thief I"
At first I only gazed at her in speechless
horror. Then I whispered slowly :
"A thief I"
" Yes," she replied, sadly.
" And upou what do you baso so serious a
charge?" I presently asked, coming to my
senses a little.
"Tlio disappearance of various articles,
such as jewelry, laces, embroideries, and
handkerchiefs, belonging to my sisters and
myself, which Miss Arlington greatly ad
mired, and even had tho audacity to inquire
about after their disappearance1, looking tho
whilo as innocent as tho angel you call her."
" Uut may not tho servants bo guilty ?" I
asked.
"Miss Arlington alonohad the opportuni
ties to purloin tho articles," replied my
friend.
"Have any of tho guests missed such
things?" I then inquired.
" No. A few adroitly put questions elicit
ed that fjctwithoutbctrayingmysuspicions.
You seo sho has frco access to tho girls' rooms
and mine, only."
I sat buried in thought awhile, and then
looking up cried emphatically :
" I don't beliovo it I"
Mrs. Man vers smiled and shook her head,
" No," I persisted, "there must bo some
thing wrong elsewhere. Miss Arlington's
faea is ono to inspire trust, and I trust it. I
shall, therefore, coustituto myself a detective
in this matter."
Again Mrs. Manvers shook her head, but
she added cordially :
"I wish you tho best of success in your
kindly cfufrta. and shall truly sympathize
with you in tho disappointment which I am
well assured uwait) you."
" Wo will see," I smiled in reply to her
closing prophecy.
Before tlio day closed I had commenced
my self-imposed task by seeking an inter
view with Itegina Arlington. This was not
difficult. My deep interest, intense admira1
lion, and allectionato impulses ssesscd
their own secret sphere of attraction for her,
and in a few days wo weroquito inseparable,
notwithstanding my few years seniority.
But I confess, I felt like a wretch, wheil I
ono day made a tempting display of tho
really hamlsomo jewelry whicb.from natural
distate, I rarely wore. Anything mora
naivo and winning than her open admira
tion, I never witnessed. And sho startled,
if not shocked me, by sayingj as eIio held a
shimmering diamond ear-ring between her
slender fingers i
" I do think) if anything on earth could
tempt me to steal, it would bo such a baublo
as this. Tho love of beauty, with me, em
braces not only great things, but little ones.
A bit of flimsy laco or dainty embroidery
has an inexpressible charm for mo, and it's
a positive, fact that I buy such things more
for tho pleasure of looking at them, than for
use; audi havo somo rare things of the
kind, Miss Robsbn."
And with child-like, eagerness sho ran
oil', soon returning with an armful of boxes,
which sho hastily tumbled on tho bed.
" You see, I've no need to steal," sho
laughed, merrily, as wo examined them,
I looked nt her keenly, Uut tho lovely eyes
were brim full of fun, and as innocent in
their ojieu gazo as a year-old baby's.
I was a good deal puzzled; and determined
she should havo every bpKrtunity to aii
propriate anything of mine, sho desired.
Nevertheless, I felt mean and ha!uilty in
tho matter, good as my1 motive was. But
that same night I found ample excuse for
myself.
It had iong been my bad habit to lie awake
Into tho email hours; and on the night in
question, I was restless as usual, and lay
staring through the windoifs, patiently
waiting tho nppcaniDCs cf tho sleepy god;
but instead of this desired god, caino Regina
Arlington.
SpiriHiko sho glided into tho room, bear
ing a small waxen taper, which sho deposit
ed on thoburcau. Then opening the bureau
drawer sho took out tllb casket of diamonds,
Opening it, sho li.tcd tho broach, and with
a smothered sigh of delight murmured softly!
" This will do 1"
And .cplacing tho casket she glided from
the room ns silently as she had entered.
I shed a few tbarsil could not help it,my
idol was so very charming.
I said nothingtoMrs.Mauvcrsj but when
Regina camo into my room tho next day I
told her of my loss.
" Oh, no I" sho cried, "hot that IoTcly dia
mond broach I"
And her lovely eyes looked straight into
my keen observing ones, their baby inno
cence only clouded by an expression of loving
distress.
I turned away in utter heart-sick disgust,
and soon excused myself on tho pica of a
violent headache. I saw little of her during
tho remainder of tho day j but that night
sho again stolo spirit-like, into my chamber.
Again she took out tho diamond casket.
This timol roso and soltly approached her,
intending to scizo hfcr by tho shoulder. But
as I stretched out my hand it was stayed by
tho reflection of her lovely faco in tho glass;
as she bent over tho gems.
Without n word I hastily left tho room and
sought Mrs. Manvers. It was only a mill:
ulo's work to awaken her and explain. Sho
was up in an instant.
As wo reached the hall Mis3 Arlington
emerged from my room, and moved softly
on to her own. As softly wo followed.
Setting down her taper, sho slipped her
hand behind tho wardrobo nnd drew out n.
long, shallow box. slid raised tho lid, placed
carefully within it the ear-ringjust abstract
ed from tho casket, and re-covering it,thrust
it behind thewanlrobongain. She then ex
tinguished tho liglit, aild with a long, weary
sigh, crept into bed again.
" We may a3 well take tho box," whisper
ed Mrs. Manvers, stepping to tho wardrobe.
( A few minutes later it was in my room
and open.
f " Every missing article hero !" exclaimed
,my friend, with a laush. 'Toor soul I hdw
h have wronged her. Heaven forgivo me I
But who could havo dreamed sho was a
somnambulist i"
Subsequently wo lea 'ncd from our beauty's
relatives that she had been affected with this
strango form of kleptomania, and also that
they had refrained froiU wounding her sensi
tive spirit by letting her know of it.
And not till somo years later, when com
pletely cured, did Mrs. Manvers and I tell
her of tlio midnight scene which I have hero
detailed.
