Lynch law Its Origin. James Lynch Was mayor of Galwny, Ire land, in 147!. He hail mado several voy ages to Spain, and on one occasion brought homo with him the son of a respectablo Spanish merchant, named Gomez. Walter Lynch.lhc only son of tho mayor of Galway, was engaged to a beautiful young lady of good family and fortune. Preparatory to the nuptials tho mayor gave a splendid en tertainment, at which young Lynch fancied his intended brido viewed his Spanish fiiend with too much regard. He accused his be loved Agnes of unfaithfulness to him, and she, irritated at his injustice, disdained to deny tho charge, and they parted in anger. On tho following night.whilo Walter Lynch slowly passed tho residence of Agnes, ho ob served young Gomez to leave tho house, ho having been invited by her father to spend tho evening with him. In tho madness of his jealousy Lynch rushed on his unsuspect ing friend who iled to a solitary quarter of tho town near tho shore. Lynch maintain ed tho pursuit till his victim had nearly reached tho water's edge, when ho overtook him, and stabbed him Id the heart, and threw tho body into tho sea, which cast it back again on tho shore, whero it was found and recognized the next morning. Tho wretched murderer surrendered himself; and his fatiier, being chief magistrate of tho town, entrusted with tho power of lifo and death, found himself obliged to condemn his son to death. On tho night preceding his execution, Ills mother went to tho heads of her family and prevailed on them to at tempt a rescue. Tho morning of the execU' tion an immense crowd had assembled, who cried loudly for mercy to tho culprit. Tho mayor exhorted them to submit to the laws but, finding them determined on a rescue, he, by a desperato victory ,ovcrcamo parent al feelings, and finding that his efforts to ac complish tho ends of justice in tho usual place, and by tho usual hands, were fruit less, ho becamo executioner himself, and from tho window of his own house, launch ed his unfortunato son into eternity.
