FARM AND GARDEN. September Hints. Tub Fall months aro the fulfillment tot tlm promise ot the earlier season. August saw the harvesting of the small er gi alus. With September the harvest continues In the orchard and potato fields. Where orchards are- not vtoll cared for this is tho "off years" for ap ples, so that all tho careful orchardlsts will reallio handsome returns. The shipment of dead beef to Europe has evidently passed the speculative stage, and Is fast setting Into a steady bus), iiess, with reasonable proflt to both grower and agent. If we can bo change our farming as to send less grain out of the country and more beef, It will be better for the soil and conse quently for tho success of American agriculture It Is time now to think of this beet production for the foreign winter market, since fodder of all kinds can bo purchased now cheaper than af ter It is stored In winter quarters. And cattle will fatten easier In fall than at any other season. Fall Seedino Is the special work for September. If a hay crop Is desired on the eeeded field next year, It may be obtained by putting In the grass seed early this month, with a good bianuring either of fine stable manuro or a chem ical fertilizer. Ground bono lias come Into high favor for such purposes (see "Some Manurlal Substances," August No.); but we should prefer some pot ash added to It, either In the form of ashes or commeicial potash salt (murl nto of potash 1. Tho special chemical manures contain the ingredients ot bone and also potash. Wo have round mem to give striking results on our grasj fields. It Is cood practice to apply seme stable manure now, and then a top dreselug of chemical manure In the spring. Kye and Wheat should go In this month. Ityo will grow on almost any soil, but well repays tho liberal feeding from tho manure pile, or where tho manure Is scare.from special fertilizers. It cost little or no more, asldo from tho manure, to raise 30 bushels of rye per acre luan 11) bushels, Une means pro fit, tho other very moderate pay for your work. Wheat has gone mostly out of cultivation in the East on account ot the small crops obtained, and rust and insects. It Is a curious fact that sever al excellent wheat crops we know of being grown on chemical fertilizers, not one has suffeied from rust. Whether due to the fertilizer we cannot say but the possibilities seem to bo In fa vor of wheat growing again on the At lantic coast. As It is usually desired (In tho East) to bring lands sown to wheat or rye Into grass, the practice or sowing tbe grass setd with tho grain Is a good one. If clover cannot lie got in by the 20th of August, It had best not be sown till spring, when It may be sown directly on tne tauscmn wniat, rye or grass, and brushed In, which brushing will not injure but greatly Denem tbe former. The Pastures havo been getting dry and scant of feed now for some weeks, for which the fodder corn will come In nicely to help out. Hut the pasture should also bo Improved, and now Is the time to do it. Tbe brush cut the first week ot this month will not sprout aeaio. All the clear ground should bo treated to a foddering ot fine stable manuro, or bone dust, or guano, etc., in return for Its feeding tbe animals so many year.", and particularly that it may continue to feed them In the years to come. Tho manure or fertilizer will be washed In by tbe fall rains, and push up at once a fresh growth. If verv hard and dry a thoroucb harrow' ing and thick reseedlng, with tbe top dressing, will result In practically a new sod. In reseedlng do not fall to put In some Orchard grass, as It Is quick grown, and sweet and nutritious, also Alslke clover, as well as some June grass and Timothy. In harrowing, uso a llclit, straight-toothed, one borse har row. It Is comparatively easy thing to literally "cause two blades ot grass (or even a dozen) to grow where but one crow before ' on most ot our pastures Potatoes bid fair, as we said above, to command a remunerative price, es peclally the late ones. It Is well to dig tuem ad fast as ripe, auu store in the cellar If not wanted to market at once, otherwise they may decay In tbe grouud in consequence of fall rains. Experi ence bos taught tho writer that early potatoes wlU keep nearly as well as those maturing late. Save labor by digging with a plow or regular potato uleger; the latter, Hue's lor example, doiug tba work beautifully, and at a great saving of expense. Sonio of the cultivators which have a double mold board tooth or cutter may be utilized for tbls purpose by removing the rest of the teeth. After plowing out, the Uexamer prong hoe Is an excellent lm plement for sitting them from the soli. The potato digger does Its own sitting. Swine will thrive finely during sum mer and early fall, fed two-thirds on weeds from tbe garden or the root fields: supposing wbat Is usually true but ought not to be,, that weeds large enough to feed them may bo found there. The orchard will recelvo from and give benefit to hogs allowed to run therein this fall, even It the windfalls partake of the 6ame scarcity as good oppies. remaps more lor mis very reason;, for when fruit Is scarce the or ellard Is neglected, and insects lucreaso many fold, to prey upon the crop of next year. It Is thought lu Germany that lusects havo superior virtues for pork-making, the nuts, etc., Infested with them havlug, extra valuo on this account. In oenehal. Tbe plowing for win ter grains stionld be finished and tho grains got lu at once. Plowing tor swing planting wilt still be prosecuted The hints ot last month In regard to this work, and draining, etc, should bo re-read as If for this month. Now is a good timo to clear up all brush about the fence corners, cut now It will not sprout again. Do not fall to attend tu fall fairs. Even It we think tbey are not true to their name, and are fre quently prostituted to other purposes let us do all we can to make them ot benefit to our calling. e. n. L. Sclen Uflo Farmer.
