At the close Of the Cabinet meeting a formal note was sent to both Chamberlain and Ilampton announcing the determlna tion of the Cabinet, Chamberlain ex pressed the hope that no action would bo taken during his absenco, and ho was told in reply that he could rest as sured that the situation would remain unchanged until both he and Hampton returned to Columbia. Hampton ex pressed a somewhat similar hopo, being anxious to be on tho ground when his Government took formal control of the 6 la to House. Chamberlain accepts the result as a crushing defeat. Ho was asked if he proposed any resistance, and responded, "It would he hopeless. Ho has hitherto mapped out a plan of passive resistance, making necessary forcible, ouster. Now he appears 'have abandoned this plan, and talks letting the responsibility rest where the order was Issued. Here In Washington he and the rest talk of the action taken by the President as the end of the Re publican party In South Carolina. In conversation ho said that the decision gave the Democrats both branches of the Legislature, as what has Deen know as the Legislature now becomes the legal Statu body ; and But tier, he went on to say, would in all human probability become Senator, No persecutions would be allowed, he said but Investigations would begin and suits be persecuted against all."
