Josfpli Harris, author nf "Walks nnil Talks on the Form," gives a long nnil iiM-ful 'Talk" ou OroilDK I'uta I (., In the American Agriculturist for Mar-'li lt, from which we extract tlm lullmvlnir : I,ut year 1 planted 13 acres of puta tif nf illffi'ri-nt vatlftlps, Including Kurly Hose, Karly Vptmout, Snow Hake, IJr.)WDi'ir IlnaUty, Coinpton't j Surprise, Ofiieven Klnir, Jones No. 4, ntid Tliorlmrti's Lato Ro.-ru. Aliiltliei Ueiicon In the adjoining Held planted IVaoliblow, Peerless, and Late Itnsji He lull a fair crop of Lnto Huso, hut the I'eachulotv and Peerless wero hard ly wortlullKKlng' In my field the Lntn Itoso (rave the lariat yield, but the Early Vermont, on the whole, was the most satisfactory crop. The potatoes were more uniform In slr.e. We had three acics, yluldluK 120 bushels per acre. The Late Kose had not cume to maturity, when the drouth and the second crop of bugs sttuclr. them, and consequently wo had n preat many small potatoes. Snow flake did tolerably well, but not ns well as the Vermunt8. But It Is not worth while talking about the varieties that did well last year. It was an exception ally bad seasun. As a jule, the only good potatoes wo had were the earllost varieties. -and this simply because they had nearly got their growth, before they wore seriously Injured by the drouth and tbo bugs. The Early Ver mont, planted side by side with the Early Hose on the 6amo day, came up earlier, and made a more vigorous growth. The plants Were stronger, larger, and more robust. I do not at tribute this wholly to the variety. Ths Early Rose hi. been grown on this farm for several years, without a change of seed. The Vermontu ore comparative ly new. Ilad wo got Early K'.se from a distance, Instead of planting our home-grown teed, the plants might have been as vigorous aa those of the Early Vermont. "It Is not clear to my mind," said the Doctor, "that a mere change of seed is so Important. I know that the New Jersey potato growers often .send here for their seed, and wo sometimes send to New Jersey for our seed; but I have nev6r yet Been any positive evi dence that anything is gained by It. And then," continued tile Doctor, "one farmer thinks it very important to plant laro potatoes, another thinks small ones Just aa good and the results of careful experiments are quoted to sus tain both opinions." "The thing Is certain," said the Dea 03u, "we shall have to plant small po tatoes tliis year. Tho bprlng of 1875 potatoes were scarce and high, aud a great many small potatoes were plant ed Mime not larger than marbles and yet we never had such a great potato crop. The next spring potatoes were not worth marketing, tail wo plauted the best and largest and never had a worse "crop. And 60 It Is evident that the character of tho season lias moro to do with the results, than the size or ine seen. Tho best crop of potatoes I ever rate cd on this farm happened to bo'from small seed. Hut It was a bit of prime ugut lauu, in nign conuttlou. The root of tho plant penetrated Into tho One. wollow soli, and needed little nutriment from tho seed. Shall wo plant In rows or In hills: shall we plant small seed or large; shall. wo cut me poiuions or pin.ni wnoloj shall wo cut tho sets from the tup or bottom, or middle of tho potato; shall we cut tho potatoos a few days before planting, and sprinkle lime on tliem; shall wo plant one or two sets In a hill; shall wo plant deep or shallow; shall we earth up, or shall wo cultivate on the flat ? To all thoso, and a dozen other ques tions which are frequently asked, I answer: "Do as you have done, or change If you feel like It; hut whatever else you do, or leavo undone, make the lai.d dry, rich, mellow, and clean. If you cannot do It this year, umko up your mi nil to no it next year, auu uegln to prepare for It now. Farmers must look ahead, Wo tnuat keep our land rich enough to grow a fair crop in au unfavorable season. Wo shall have nigh prices, aud low prices, iu tho t'u ture as In tho past aud tho men who win tuaKu money by potatoes will ug those who take the most palus to keen up and la:reasu tho fertility of their arms.
