We had only time last week to
publish the mere announcement of the
death of Done HARPER, Esq„ of East Hano
ver township. He was born on the 9th
day of September, 1791, and made his
king eareer a highly useful one to the
people of this county. In 1834 he was
elected to the Stafe Senate, to represent
the district composed of Daupl►in and
Lebanon, and attred in that capacity for
four years, and it is the general accord
that his public. as well as private Itte, was
one of unspotted *integrity and unblem
ished usefulness. , the "Harpers," in East
Hanover, have lived and died on the same
spot for over an hundred years, and the
"Place" has been known - by that familiar
name for generations. Mr. H. exceeded
the allotted three•seom years and ten,
and notwithstanding his many years,
was as erect and.sprightly the last time
we saw him, but a short time before his
death, as he was thirty years ago.

TOLLS ON THE READING RAILROAD.
—The case of Timothy Boyle vs. the
Reading Railroad Company, was decid
ed on Wednesday last, by Justice Strong,
of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, in
equity. This was an application for an
injunction to restrain the Reading Rail
road Company from charging for freight
and transportation more than the maxi
mum sum (four cents a mile for freight,
and two cents a mile for passengers) al
lowed by their act of incorporation. The
case was argued some time ago. Judge
Strong, in delivering the opinion, said
the charter of the company granted two
powers—the first being that of a railroad
company, and the other that of a trans
portation company. Under the first
power they might allow the use of their
road to others .for the conveyance of
freight and passengers. tinder the sec
ond they were allowed themselves to be
what are commonly Itnown as carriers.
He decided that the word tolls, used in
the act of AsseMbly, fixing a - maximum
price, did not apply to transportation by
the company itself; but only to eases
where their road was used by other car
riers.
The injunction was refused, and the
complainant's hill dismissed.

A good deal of excitement was I
elicited last week in this borough by the
appearance of two U. S. Detective officers,
who proceeded to arrest A. S. Ulrich,
Esq., and Mr: - Pre'derick Shaeffer, (coach
tnaker4en a charge fiend in relation
to the obtaining of Bounty 'Money. They
were taken to Philadelphia and immedi•
ately released on bail•
We have since been informed that
the whole affair originated In a misunder.
standing. That Mr. Ulrich, who is hard
of hearing, understood Mr, Shaeffer to
say, (whom ti - Cdid, pot know personally)
that he was .the father of the deceased
soldier, while' Mr. Shaeffer asserts that
he wanted the papers made out "as a
father," dc,c. After the matters are fully
developed the ,:public will no doubt see
that such is the feet. In the mean time
it is but just to the parties implicated that
the public should suspend forming an
opinion. Welitive , known Mr. Ulrich
for a number years and he always had
a high reputation, for honesty and strict
integrity; nor, do we know of anything
to the prejudice of Mr. Shaeffer, before
this unfortunatsiteplication.
