THE COUUT-, HOW SOLD IK lERS ARE AND, ATED ON - RER'S ISLTRE The Brooklyn Daily - Union. says: "Horrible Stories about robberies and outrages on volunteers on Riker's Island are brought to us by an army officer. If true, they reveal a horrible system of positive crimes which reflect disgrace on all concerned. Our informant states that recruits, when taken to the Island, are placed in line upon the parade 'ground, and, there, one by one, stripped naked re. garcllesa of weather, to be searched for concealed citizens' clothes; that this search Mats from an hour to an hour and a halfduring which time the shivering men . gre kept In the open air, and then sent to comfortless wedge tents to freeze, sicken, 'Enid perchance die, from the effects of this barbarous:exposure. Futhermore, is said "I.li•be practised a system of the most shameful extortion. During the exces sively cold weather, some of the men bought little sheet iron stoves, worth $l - at retail In the city, to place in the tents, for which they ware charged the sum of slo.each. At'ne time the only well on the Island was frozen up; for two days the men were without a supply of water, and when water was brought them by lighters it was s foul, from the vessels in which it had been brought, as to be unfit for use. At this time, it is said, water was sold for $5 per canteen - 'full. Forty cents were demanded and paid for a six-penny pie, and twenty-five cents fora paper of chewing tobacco. A GIANT AT THE BAR. -It may seem a singular thing but it is nevertheless a veritable fact, that the tallest man in the United Kingdom serves behind the bar of a public house in this town. He is seven feet four inches in height, upward of twenty•three stone in weight, and his Strength is in proportion to hl ti 26. By r. trade he is a ropemaker, and he occasion ally exhibits some rare specimens of what he can do in that way, by twisting paper into rope with his fingers almost as strong as if made of the usual materials. His hands are so large that he can grasp with one of them three ordinary sized hands, and is thus able to shake hands with three persons at the same time.— Liberpool paper. THE' GREAT PRIZE F►WHT.—The editor of Bell's , Life, on a visit to Heenan, Janu ary. 22d, finds him shill suffering. He hasbeen se much reduced in, weightthat he'fitiv barely weighs twelve stone seven pounds. - He declares that :beyond the first two or three rounds of his match with King he hps no recollection what ever of anything that took place, nor can he in any way account for the extraordi ,l4iy ' falling off in his fighting. . He felt on entering the ring fit to fight forhis and he lotiked , upon victory as a foregone c~ncliis . ; ,but in a very few minutes a giddiness -came over him, for which he cannotaccount,.and beyond this he re members nothing at all, and he declares helms never felt the same man since. DISEASED HDRSES.-It is said the gov t.' Crhinent - hive at. Washington about forty ..tho.usand.diseased,horses that are dying • .ofirrtlaily, and that the men who are tak ing Care ofthem contract the disease from the horses, and are also dying rapidly— about fifteen - a day. A man who has been there, and waited Upon some of the sick men, reports that something like a' • dozen colored men, and an `average of about three white men, die daily from the horse disease. A large. number of these horses have been bought up by specula tors, taken to various parts of the country 'and offered for sale. Byers should be careful. Several hotel keepers have r_e solved that they shall not be stabled on their preMises, as it endangers not only their own horses, but those of their pa trons. Nova, OUST.--A stage proprietor of New York, who lost fifty horses by glan. ders, contracted from a shed adjoining his stables, erected by the New York and Harlem Railroad Company for the shel ter of their diseased animals, has just re covered $5,000 damages in an action against the latter. The first petticoat mentioned in his. toiy wa.s,.'worn , by a boy. It is record that Samuel's mother "made him a little-coat," and of course it was a petty one. A milliner in New York has obtained $5OO damages for abusive language from a gentleman whose wife's skating cap she had not trimmed satisfactorily.
