'THE CORNER. Doubtful Theology.—A trier d *hate we shall call Pat, “for shott," tells us the followleggood-stoFr of himself: • vWften'tbitt tam id le boy he was called up ritya co'untry'sch . ool and the question sud • denly propounded by the pedagogue: "Patrick how many Gods are there 7" Pat was not a very distinguished theo• logian then, and the years have made him ono'better very fast" in such matters, but he pretpptly responded kiThre6; Or." - "Take your seat r thundered the mas -ler.: "and if in fine minutes you don't an swer correetty,ll'll-welt you." Mire ;probationary period passed, and 'Pat i ttaiting- the - door hesitatingly, stated the number of God's at "Five, sir:' lie received the promised "welting," and a remand to his seat with ten min utes for consideration. Ten minute's was up, Pat was up too, and, satisfied that he had not fixed the matter sufficiently high before, he shouted: "There;siten, -sir?' :He -saw 'the ferule descending, and, 'bolting out of the door, he cleared a five rail fence, and broke like a quarter horse across the. field. Panting with exertion, he met a lad with a book under his arm, and with a look of one desirin e g the pur• _suit of knowledge under difficulties. .'"Where are you going P said Pat. "To.school,,yonder," was the prompt trePly. "You are, are you'?" said Pat quietly —"How many God's are there 7" "One," answered the boy. - f'Wen you'd better not go down there then. You'll have a good time with your one God.: I've just left, there with ten, and that was not enough to save me froM one of the darudest fieltiugs thatsou .ever.heard of! rlff7dpriing -White People—The papers Fare filled with-accounts of Boston cruelty, as practiced upon , the inmates of the House of Reformation in that godly city. It, seems, from the recent report of that institution; that nyounT woman, seven teen years of age was brutally whipped with a 3rattan, half anlnch in diameter and twenty iinclres long over -the -should .ersmniiiradlc Of her 'neck, -until her 'flesh -waslilank and bluett and then placed in .solitary confinement ! The great calf Sumner went boohooing over the world 'for two years, and all Boston had a grand conniption fit in Faneuil Hall, for not half the severity visited upon this poor de fenceless orphan girl. Woman whipped in New England 1863 ! In the boys* de partment the punishments are somtimes inflicted with an ordinary wagon Whip by the -Si perintendent in person" But "mot only are the women whipped with rattans, the boys larruped with horse svhipe,< and all hands starved, -upon the :strictest' principles of economy, bat the ordinary decencies of nature are deliber ately outraged as follows All the prisoners aro provided with the aro l eery bath tub, from three -to seven in number. Placed side by .side, at distances from twelve to twenty-four inches apart; , these are all in open rooms, without any screen or protection ••what ever, in these publicly-exposed tubs the priso ners, men, women and girls in their respective .departments,in groups of from three to seven, are required to . per fornt, tfieir abl ' u'tions.' Old offen ders, young offenders, girls of n ine -and ten years or age, alike must , dierotte themselves, and in nrrrotamcvaiteau or their fellows and officers, in a state of utter nudity, enter the bath, perform its duty, and partake its refreshment." We beg our readers to recollect that the above occurs at the "hub of the uni verse," in the amoral centre" of creation, where the people are so refined that they think it a sin to make a black man worlo. TEE FORFEITURE OF COTTON— WHO GETS THE LION'S SHAse.--A great deal of cotton is siezed in the Southwest and sold osten sibly for the , Goitinment, bat one or two sales recently retorted, amounting in gross to $60,513, the amount realized to the Government was but $26,919. The Surveyor alone received in these two transactions, for his fees and cost of freight, the sum of $27,533, or $614 more than the Government. The rest went to the United States Marshal, Clerk, so that the forfeiture appears to be made chiefly for the benefit of a few incum• bents of office, and not for the advantage ;the Government. AN INTELLIGENT HORSE.—The West Chester Jeffersortian is responsible for the following : We are credibly informed that one of our Pikeland friends who attends church quite regularly, geared up his horse a few Sundays ago to take some friends to Vin cent Church. But it was no go. The horse would not budge. After parleying a short time—for the horse had never acted so before—his head was turned in the direction of another place of worship, and be went theerfully. It turned out afterwards that a violent abolition har angue was made at Vincent on that day, to which the faithful beast would not car ry his master. A travelr, writing from Illinois, states that in getting to the place of his destina tion, he experienced all kinds of go-a beaditiveness. In the first place he took a " steamboat---in the second the railroad —in the third, a mail coach—the fourth rode on, horseback—the fifth, went six miles on tot to Terre Haute—and was finally rode out of the village on a rail.— He says he don't know which to prefer, out of the six; but thinks the latter meth od is unquestionably the cheapest, though its accommodations are most wretched. AFTER A THOROUGH TRIAL OF MORE THAN TEN YEARS, the timO•pleees martnrao tend by the American Watch Co., of Waltham, Mass., have gained a firm hold upon the favor of the public, and now, no less than 75,000 of them are speaking for themselves in the pockets of the people. From a very insignificant beginning the business has increased un til we arc justified in stating That WE MAHE MORE THAN ONE HALE of all the watches sold in the Uni ted States. Repeated enlargement of our factory build ings, and the labor of 500 operatives, still find us un equal to supply the eoustantty Increasing demand.— and we may here observe that notwithstanding the high pr ice of labor and-mat mists; we Bethel I y sell our products at less prices than those current five Jeers ago. We refer to these facts only for purposes of proper ly introducing another subject relative to our menu. facture of watches. , Hitherto our chief object has been to make noon watches for the million at the lowest pos. sible price--sometking to take the place of the make be l les e watches called "Ancras," Upham'," "Eng lish Patent Levers," t fm.. annually thrown upon this market, in. countless numbers, by European work shops—watches which are the refuse of their facto ries, unsaleable at home and perfectly worthless ev erywhere. This object we have accomplished, and now we hare to announce, that we have commenced the manufac ture of watches' f the very ' - HIGHEST GRADE KNOWN TO OHRO. NOM ETRY, unennalled by anything bitherte made by ourselves and unsurpassed by anything made in the world. For this purpose we have the amplest facilities. We have erected an addition to our main buildings expressly for Ibis branch of our business, and have filled it with the boat workmen in our service. Profiting by our long experience, we have remodelled the form of our watches, introducing such Improvements ns bare been suggested and proved to be good from time to time, and have instituted new and severe testa of isochro nism, adjustment and compensation. Nothing in fact is wanting either in meehani or 1 principles, material of workmanship to onsure per. feetion in the result. We continue to manufacture our other well-known qualities outlet the following names "APPLETON, TRACY & CO." "P. S. BARTLETT," And the "Soldier's Watch," "W3l. EL LRRY." The latter, the lowest . pr iced watch we make, is a substantial, reliable timmp Mee, cased in sterlingsilver —hunt Mg pattern, and is not liable to get out (dottier either 1,1 matching riding or fighting.
