E CORNER. 1. [Protrid the A /bony Argue uf Hondo!!.] A HORfiIBLE AFFAIR.—A horrible aflair e . has just been brought to light in Buffalo. A woman know as Mrs. Laahceil, calling herself an Indian Doctress, has resided in that city'for some years, and has been generally suspected of being an .abortion ist. Some IS months since, , sha was ar rested on a charge of causing the death of a young girl, but escaped conviction.— On. Thursday last, a corpse was taken from the house in a mysterious manner, and information having been given of the fact to the police, inquiries were made which resulted in the discovery of the place where it had been ipterred. The body was exhumed, and an examination proved that death had been caused by vi olence attending the procurement of an abortion, The house of the Doctress was immediately entered and searched, when a horrible scene.presented itself to the of ficers. In one room, a young woman was found in the agonies of death, having submitted to the operation of the wretch who occupied the house. Her name was Mary Louisa Boyer. She died at four o'clock V'ri. In an• • • was a young woman named J; ••• • on, who has a sister named t Niagara Falls. She • in a hopeless ondition. Both of these girls were victims of the seducer's art, both respectfully connected. So much of the tales as the Courier tells is sickening in the extreme, and all is not told. The girl whose burial led to the discov- ery of the "slaughter house" Wag Mary Hamilton, and she died of violence. The woman Laahceil was arrested, al so e negro named John Craig, and a young man named Robt. Harod, an assumed physician. An investigation of the case 'a looked for with anxiety, as further rev !adorn! are expected. The woman has - once tried on a charge of abortion acquitted. She can hardly escape this time. Startling disclosures are expected to grow out of this arrest, which, may involve those holding respectable positions in so ciety. Yesterday while the officers were in possession of the "slaughter house" not less than twenty females, married and sin gle, called and enquired for the proprie tress. JONES AND Pups.—Jones being a great lover of dogs, has a famous breeder and the pups are In great demand among those who know and appreciate their quality. Jones has a great many friends, and when any of them visit him, his en. thuslasm for dogs leads him to boast of the breed °fills own. The result is, his friends make him promise to keep one of the pups for him when the next litter is produced. One day Mrs. Jones inquired in a quiet way. 'Jonah how many pups will that won derful dog have I' 'Three or four perhaps' Do you know how many of the next litter you have promised to your friends , ?' 'You have promised no less that thirty flve. 'Well,' replied Jones, reddenings slight ly, and speaking with considerable vehe mence 'a man that won't promise a friend a pup, is a mighty mean man.' ICEEPIA' THEM AWAKE,—Near Newark, N. J., lived a pious family who had taken an Orphan to raise, who, by the way, was rather underwitted. He had imbibed very strict views on religious matters, however, and once asked his, adopted mother if she didn't think it wrong for the old farmers to come to church and fall a• sleep, paying no better regard to the set . - vice. She replied she did. Accordingly, before going to church the next Sunday he filled his pocket with apples. One bald-headed old man, who invariably went to sleep during the sermon, particu larly attracted his attention. Seeing him et last nodding and, giving nasal evidence of being In the "land of dreams," he haul ed offend took'theastonnded sleeper, with an apple, square on the top of his bald pate. The minister and aroused congre gation at once turned around and indig nantly gazed at the boy, who merely said the preacher, as he took another apple his hand, with a sober, honest expres- X?f couh)enance, "You preach on, old keep 'em awake."
