THE CORNER. LENDING TO THE LORD.-A poor man, some of whose family were sick, lived near Deacon Murray. referred to in the trVet, "Worth of a Dollar." and occasional ' ly called at his house for a supply of milk. One morning he 'came while the family . were at breakfad. Mrs. Murray rose to , wait upon him, but the deacon said to her, "Wait till after breakfast." She did' so, and meanwhile the deacon made some in quiries of the man about his family and circumstances. Auer family worship, the deacon invited him to go out to the barn with him. When they got into the yard the deacon, pointing to one of the cows, exclaimed, "There, take that cow, and , drive her home." The man than!.:ed him heartily for the cow, and started for home; but the deacon was observed to stand in the attitude of deep thought until the man had 'gone some rods. He then lodked up, and called ,out. "Hey, bring that cOW back." The man looked around, and the deacon added "Let that cow come back, and you come back too." He did so ; and when he came into the yard again the deacon said, "There, take your pick out of 'the cows, I ain't going to lend to the Lord the poorest cow l' we got." CONFESSIONS OP A HORS'S THIEF.-A tett , days since, says the Buffalo Commercial, the police here arrested a man who had stolen two horses at Niagara Falls. The property was recovered, and the thief has since been in jail, where he has had leisure •to write us the following letter. We print It as it contains many valuable -hints and is altogether a literary cariosity : • BUFFALO Jan., June 16, 1361.—Being as you are aware, under arrest for the crime of horse stealing, I deem it my duty to give people a little advice in regard to pre venting their horses from being stolen.-:- First, never put a padlock on your barn : It is of no more use in keeping a thief out 'than a straw. Put on all your doors good house 'then carry your key with ytsti, ei• it you' leave it in the house, put it ina . dra‘V;er, or some place where it is out of sight-. if a thief sees a good horse go into a barn -that has a lock on with which he is not fa miliar, he will go to the owner's house and stay all night, passing himself off as a traveler—all for the sake of getting a sight of his barn door key. All a thief wants is to see a key once, and from that one sight he will go and have one made. Second, always keep a little dog; one that will make a great -noise. A small `one is better 'than a large One. A thief is - scared at nothing so much as a barking dog. If ever a strange traveler stays at your house all night, and you find your dog dead in the morning, you . may rest assure he has poisoned it. In such a case the better way is to say nothing, but the few nights following keep a diligent look • out around your barn, house, &c. This advice will be beneficial to all far mers if tiny will follow it. It is from one who is young in yearS, but knows well what he is writing. If this chances to be read by Christians, I implore them to pray for me, Oh, I need your prayers. A 'Christian lady was in the jail this morning, bat She neglected to call on me. I trust . she may see this and •call 'on me hereaf• ter. • A few words to the merchants. When you lock and unlock your, doors ; don't hang your keys in sight. I very often see young men going through the streets swinging their store keys in their hands. This they ought not to do. Me ny is the time that stores are robbed merely by their getting a sight at the key on the street or hanging in the :store. HONORABLE MENTION.—Frank U. Far quhar, of Pottsville, graduated with honor and ranked No. 2 in his class at West Point, last week. No. 1 graduate was a boor Irish boy, Peter O'Rourke, who at the age of sixteen, did not know his letters. Eaving saved the lives of several persons •on Lake Erie, he was oared a considera ble sum of money, which he declined, on condition that they would secure him an education. They complied with his re quest, sent him to school, and afterwards secured him a situation at West Point, - where he has just graduated with the highest honors. It is of such stuff that the great men of this country are made. Oa Billy Bowlegs, the great Seminole 'Thief, is emulating Cmsar in the pith and concentration of his sentences. He tells the whole story of the position of things between General Harney and himself in a brief couplet, thus : "If Harney catch, Billy hang, If BM) , catch, Barney hang." , Ovan !—What a word is that "'over!" - what a world of meaning it conveys, and in what a world of different ways! Let •any man come forth and truly say the war is "over!" and we will not be responsible for the consequences ! The people as a mass would elect him President, while the contractors, sub-contractors, and their sat ,ellites, would assassinate him ! K IP. A. fellow out West being asked whether the liquor he was drinking was a good article, replied : "Wal, I don't know, I guess so. ' There is only one queer thing about it : whenever I wipe my mouth, I burn a hole in my shirt !" weir Laziness begins in cobwebs and ends in iron chains. It creeps over a man so slowly and imperceptibly, that he is bound tight before he is aware.
