Q 2 THE CORNER. HAVOC OF LIFE BY WAR 'lt is difficult to. conceive what fearful haVoc this custom has made of human life. Some of its incidental ravages seems to defy belief. It has at times entirely depopulated immense districts. In mod ern, as well as ancient times, large tracts have been left so Utterly desolate, that one might pass from village to village, even from city to city, without finding a solita - ly inhabitant. The war of 1756, waged in the heart of Europe, lelt in one instance no less than lwentycontistuous villages withrmt a sin gle man or beast. The f:.irty years war, in the seventh century, reduced the popu lation of Germany from 12,000,000 to 3,- 000,000—three fourths; and that of temhurg from 500,000 to 48,000—more than nine-tenths I Thirty " thousand vil lages were destroyed ; in many others the population entirely died out; and hi districts once studded with towns and cit ies, there sprung up immense forests. Look at the havoc of sieges—in that of Lond , nclerry 12,000 soldiers, besides a vast numberof inhabitants; in that of Paris In 16th century, 30,000 victims of mere hunger; in that of Molplaquet, 34,000 sol diers alone ; in that of Ismail, 90,000: of Vienna, 70,000; of Ostend, 120,000; of Mex ico. 150,000; of Aere,.300,000; of Carthage, 700,000; of Jerusalem, 1,000,000. Mark the slauffhter of sirivie battles— at Lebanto, 25,000; at Auster:itz, 30,000; it Eyiau, 60,000; at Waterloo and Qua tre Bras, one en g agement in fact, 70;000 . .; at Borodino, 80,000; at Fontenoy, 100,000; at Arbela, 300,000; at Chalons, 300,000 of Attila's array alone; 400,000 Usipetes slain by Julius Ccesar in one battle, and 930,000 Germans in another. Take oniy two case's more. The army of Xerxes says Dr. Dick, must have atnotin ted to 5,233,320; and if the attendants' were only one-third as great as common at the present day' in ['astern countries, the s• m total must have reached nearly six millions. Yet in one year, this vast multitude was reduced, though not entire ly by death, to 300,000 fighting men; mid of these only 3,000 escaped destruction. Jenghiz-Khan, the terrible ravager of Asia in the 13th century, shot 90,000 an the plains of •Nessa, and inasacred 200,000 at the storming of Charasm. In the district of Herat, lie butchered 1,600,000, and in two cities with their dependencies, 1,800,- 000. During the last twenty-seven years of his Jong reign, he is said, to.have masa crel,i'more than half a million every year ; and in the first fourteen years, lie is sup posed by Chinese historians, to have de stroyed not less than eighteen millions ; a sum total of 32,000,000 in forty-one years. In any view, what a fell ilcstroyer is war Napoleon's wars sacrificed full six millions, and all the wars consequent upon the ''French Revolution some nine or ten mil lions. The Spaniards are said to have destroyed in forty-two years more than twelve millions American Indians, Grecian wars sacrificed 15,000,000; Jewish wars, 25,000,000 ; the wars of the twelve Cre -cars, 30'000,000; in all the wars cif the Romans before Julius Cmsar, 00,000,000; the wars of the Roman Empire, of the. Saracens and the Turks,6o,ooo,ooo each ; • those of the Tartars, 80,000,000; those of Africa, 1U0,000,000. "If we take into consideration'," says the learned Dr. Dick, "the number not only of those who have fallen in battle, hut of those who have per ished through the natural consequences of war, it wi I not perhaps be overrating - the destruction of human life, if we affirm • that one-tenth of thelnman race has been destroyed by the ravages of war; and ac cording to this estimate, more than four teen thousand millions of human beings :have been slaughter In the wars ince the - beginning of the world." Edmund Burke went still further, and reckoned the sum total of its ravages, from the first, at no less than thirty-five thousand millions. --Napolean saithhat the reason why he beat the Austrians was that they did not know the value of five minutes. At the celebrated battle of Rivoli conflict seemed on the point of being decided -against him. He saw the critical state of - affairs, and instantly took his resolution. He dispatched a flag to the Austrian gen eral's headquarters with prqposals for an armistice. The unwary Austrian fell into • the snare; and for a few moments the thun der of battle wns hushed. Napoleon seiz ed the precious moments, and while nmus •ing the enemy with negotiation s arranged his line of battle, changed his front, and in a few minutes was ready to renounce the fierce of discussion for the stern ahi trament of arms. The splendid victory of Rivoli was the result. —DUEL EXIT 011 DIN ay. —The New- Orleans Delta of Wednesday relates an extraordinary affair of honor which took place near that city on Christmas morn ing. The combatants were an Irishman and a German, each puissant of rst, nod who entertaining a mutual animosity of long standing, agreed to-settle it by a com bat with brass knuckles. The affair was conducted with every formality sanction ed by the code. The two champions fought desperately the brass knuckles fell with terrible rapidity and shocking ef fect upon the faces and sculls of each, un til fifteen or eighteen rounds had been fbught, when a battered and mutilated Milesian was born senseless Crum the field and With little expectation 9f his recovery. —A GERMAN AT A BANK.--A German, who had 8300 in gold &posited iu one of the Western banks, stepped up to thecoun ler the other clay, presented his certificate, and demanded his gold. He was paid when he said to the banker. "Vot you gif for golt now, eh?" "Five per cent," was the response. "Oh, yaw dot ishgoot. I sell you close for good paper rnonish.',— "All right," was the reply, tend 8315 in cur rency was handed the ex•depositor, who took $l5 from' his roll of notes, and hand ed back $3OO, saying: "1 deposits clot Mit you. You're Boot; I sees." And taking his new certificate, he departed with his $l5 premium. AN AMUSING PEDIGREE or HANNIBAL.— A correspondent of the Journal gives some account of the ancestry of Hanni bal Hamlin, Vice President elect. It seems that the report that Mr. Hamlin had negro blood in his veins, sprang from the fact that hist father was named Africa Hamlin. His grandfather, a patriot of the Revolu. tion, took a fancy to name a part of his nine children after the several continents, and Europe Hamlin, Asia Hamlin, Ameri ca Hamlin, and Africa Hamlin were des ignations which folk , of his sons were obliged to carry to the grays. > - ~.:r aa~cc.:aa.:.
